Summary
Ride the Iron Horse. It can take you from New York to South Africa. It can take you from the year 1804 to the year 2000. It can take you from penniless manual laborer to powerful multi-millionaire. It can take you from a normal, well-adjusted, well-rounded person to an obsessed, singled-minded, one-tracked trainhead. This is a real railroad game, not just a strategy game that happens to involve railroads. If you want to hop on a plane, car or ship, hop on another game. This game is about trains for people who love trains. Everything about the game is centered around an authentic look and feeling of the railways. Period video and pictures are interlaced with the game. The design and interface are true to the character of the fabled late 1800's railroads. A.I. opponents are based on real people. And all maps are real (based on satellite photography from US Geological Service and other sources). [Gathering of Developers]

PC Gameworld
One of the few instances where the sequel outperforms the original. If you are even remotely interested in strategy games, you owe it to yourself to give this one a stab.

Strategy gaming at its finest - minus all the senseless violence. [Feb 1999, p.172]

Fans of the original will love RT2 and anyone with even the slightest strategical bent will love the challenge it poses.

Playing Railroad Tycoon II is an emotional experience bringing back memories of Lionel trains and Christmas mornings long past and staring at Lionel catalogs and dreaming.

An engrossing game. It's strength lies in its portrayal of a cut-throat business environment, with the "train set" element of the game playing second fiddle, albeit a gloriously rendered second fiddle.

If you are looking for an RTS game with something really different, or if you have an interest in trains, you won't find a game more appealing than Railroad Tycoon II.

Players who are wary of all things pecuniary can elect to leave the stock market alone, and those that are truly phobic can opt to play in "sandbox mode" without any competition or monetary concerns at all-kind of a fancy virtual train set. Those that do will be missing out on one of the best features of the game, however.

If you're a hard core strategy fan who's into world building, you'll have a hard time finding a game that will keep you more entertained than this remarkable product.

This game requires an extensive amount of time to understand as its realism is unsurpassed by any other strategy game in the same genre.

A must-play for any simulation fans. I enjoyed the campaign levels and spent many a late night striving to get that last load in for the gold star achievement.

This game is worryingly addictive; it's not just a business simulation, nor just a power game, but an educational competition where only the forward thinker survives and thrives.

Sebastien L. gave it a10:
This game was made some time ago, nonetheless considering everything with newer games, this is really a fun game, especially more so playing on the expert setting for a more realistic game play. Graphics are still very good and everybody enjoying management kind of game will have a blast playing this. It is more than a game about train though unless you like train, maybe something else would be better.
Daniel S. gave it a9:
An altogether delightful refinement of all the wonderful concepts that made the original RRT such an addictive hit. Scenarios are sufficiently challenging to test the mettle of experienced players while being available to newer tycoon wannabees.
Tom V. gave it an8:
Quite a lot of fun to while away an afternoon with on a scenario. The campaign is good, but can get a bit repetative- basically building a railway from here to there, inevitably across all kinds of harsh terrain.
John S. gave it a0:
This game is rubbish. Extremely boring, ugly interface. I don't recommend it, unless you really REALLY love trains.
Andrew E. gave it a10:
I thought this game is brilliant i completed it within a week. i ran my trails through europe.
