Game Info

Publisher: SouthPeak Interactive / Evolved Games

Developer: Atomic Moon

Genre(s): Real-Time Strategy, First-Person Shooter

Players: 2

ESRB Rating: T (Teen)

Release Date: August 25, 2009

Summary

Raven Squad puts players in control of two groups of mercenary squads who crash land behind enemy lines in the Amazonian jungles. It requires tactical planning and a liberal amount of brute force to escape to safety. Each of the eight squad members possesses distinctive skills and weaponry that the player has to use wisely to progress through the game's story driven objectives. Raven Squad sets itself apart by allowing players to switch freely between real-time strategy and first-person shooter gameplay. Only by mastering both of these modes of play, and becoming adept at switching between the two, can players make it out of the jungle alive. [SouthPeak Games]

A mix of genres, especially FPS and RTS, is always a difficult thing, but in this case the developers did a good job!

GameStar

It's quite short. The credits were rolling after less than seven hours. The weak presentation is just as annoying as the question why the game deprives the player of lots of exciting situations. There are better games of the genre like Rainbow Six: Vegas.

Strategy Informer

It’s not a game that you should spend your money on quite yet. Maybe, after the passage of time, when you can find it cheap or even for free, it will be worth a cursory glance. For the moment however, it’s best to skip this one out.

Cheat Code Central

Raven Squad starts with a brilliant concept and doesn't bother to flesh it out into a fun or compelling game. It's practically a gift to competing developers. In that regard all it lacks is a note reading, "Here's a template for a hybrid FPS-RTS; do something useful with it, because we don't feel like it."

Total PC Gaming

Raven Squad is a wasted idea that suffers from poor execution. [Issue#25, p.52]

PC Gamer

The worst part is the voice acting. [Dec 2009, p.77]

Raven Squad is bland, boring and definitely not fun. Avoid it at all cost.

Absolute Games

Some people mockingly compare Raven Squad with Company of Heroes and Call of Duty. I prefer to compare it with Stormrise. These games belong to different genres but share the same approach: invent an original gameplay concept and… bungle it completely.

LEVEL (Czech Republic)

Promising start of this game is soon drowned in identical levels, boring FPS part, stupid and user-unfriendly tactical screen. In fact there is no reason to play this. [Oct 2009]

IGN

Don’t play this game. The idea of blending a first-person shooter with a real-time strategy game isn’t a bad one, but the execution was a complete failure. I’ll look back fondly at my time reviewing Raven Squad -- all three hours of it -- but only because I couldn’t stop laughing at the fact that this game exists.

myHKRISS gave it a4:
I played this game for about 10 minutes and then i erased it without having any doubts that it's the worst 2009 game. The graphics don't look bad, but the voice acting and gameplay, plus the behavior of the enemy and characters make this game an "avoid game". Too bad it could have been a unique experience.
