Don't expect to be able to pick up and play rFactor, as it's a difficult beast to tune into - if you aren't used to simulations and have only played console 'sims' like Project Gotham Racing and Forza Motorsport then you'll be shocked at the difficulty unless you play with all the driving aids, which somewhat defeats the point.

A superb racing simulation that is primarily intended for mod communities and multiplayer racing. Single player mode suffers from a lack of tracks and cars. [Nov 2005] (score for multiplayer online)

YouGamers
The granddaddy of hyper-accurate racing simulations, rFactor remains near the top of the heap in this genre.

Look past the 20th century visuals and the joys of multiplayer and near-limitless expansion make it alluring. [Feb 2008, p.80]
Boomtown
rFactor is a solid racing game with the potential to become a classic because of its open architecture, well designed physics and outstanding net code.

This isn’t, however, anything especially new or individual – it’s simply a game which takes on the roles of beginner’s guide and an enthusiast’s forum at the same time, and that’s nothing to be sniffed at.

The essence of rFactor is that this is a game for hard core racing fans.

Other than the fact that rFactor never crashed whilst I was playing it, I can’t think of a single positive thing to say about it. It’s a terrible piece of work that is more expensive than all its current rivals (except Need for Speed ProStreet, but that’s shovelware). It is a title designed to con people out of their money, nothing more.

Mike M gave it an8:
NB: I'm into the sim racing thing; fans of arcade racing (NFS) should probably ignore this review, or invert the score. Even though I list a lot of cons here, I think rFactor deserves a 8/10 for it's great physics engine and huge mod-ability. It's an incredibly fun game, and is where I've learned a lot of basic driving techniques. Pros: + Solid physics engine. Not the best, though. Lacks in a few areas: complex suspensions (especially MacPherson) have to be implemented with giant hacks, tire model is not as good as others, turbo modeling is very bad, etc. + Very easy to mod every type of content. Has a (somewhat limited) C++ plugin API, with documentation. + Breadth of available mods is astounding. Some of them are even pretty high quality! + Great immersion if you get your simracing rig set up well. Neutral: + Built in force feedback is boring and soupy. There are plugins to fix this. + Lot of mid to low quality mods. Beware. + Big investment to actually enjoy the game. Don't even bother with this game if you don't have/plan to get a racing wheel (or at least a joystick). + Good netcode (if you can find a race to participate in). Cons: + The content the game comes with is totally insufficient considering the price. Those not wanting to locate and install quality mods should avoid rFactor like the plague. + Graphics are pretty bad compared to newer games like Dirt, Grid, or even iRacing. High res textures in mods helps some, but not nearly enough. + Multiplayer community is pretty weird: it's basically impossible in my experience to have a pick-up race that's competitive and fun, without wreckers. iRacing handles this a lot better than rFactor. Just racing with your mates works great though. + AI is bad. AI cars seem to cheat/act unnaturally when driver assists are off and the AI skill is turned up. + Lacks good support for track surfaces other than asphalt (and maybe cobblestones). Sandpits and grass areas are totally unrealistic in terms of tire/surface interaction. Rallying is pretty much pointless.
Eric L. gave it a9:
rFactor's physics may not be perfect but only hard core racers will notice. For normal people, this is a very good simulation. rFactor appears to come naked: not many tracks and cars to choose from. However, this simulation has been made to be very easy to upgrade with cars, series and tracks that fans can do. For example, adding a new track to rFactor is as easy as adding a track folder under the "Location" folder. Just go to rFactor Central (http://www.rfactorcentral.com/index.cfm) to make rfactor become almost anything you want it to be. Network play works well and anyone's computer can become a server. rFactor can give beginners many driving aids to help them keep the car on the track but real racers can turn them all off.
Ya Hoo gave it a5:
I had high hopes in rFactor but was unfortunately disappointed. The physics engine is definitely not as realistic as Live For Speed. The graphics aren't even that great : low quality textures, frame rate varies a lot and can go too low when going past the pits for example (even in low quality settings with an A64 3000+ & GF6800GT). On the up side, the mod scene is very active.
