Personally I think anybody who has some real-life driving experience and is an auto racing fan will appreciate this title for what it really is: the very first rally simulator. And if I started this review with a quote from the in-game tips, I want to end it with another quote, this time from the game's readme: Good luck, and dont forget to break!

The shock-and-awe comes from its uncanny depiction of out-of-control, no-safety-net rally driving at its most visceral. [Dec 2004, p.97]
PC Format
Astonishingly accurate, but agonisingly tough - a rock-hard and rough-edged diamond. [Oct 2004, p.90]

The effect of this super-hardcore handling is that just getting around a stage is a hell of an achievement. Every bend, no matter how slight, is a challenge that must be met with skill and conviction. Bugger it up and it'll bugger you right back.

RBR demands a level of concentration and a delicacy of control that the majority of gamers won't have encountered before, thus ensuring it occupies a genuine gap in a crowded market. A harsh but rewarding drive. [Sept 2004, p.104]

Paul K gave it a10:
Stands with iRacing, NASCAR Racing 2003 Season and Grand Prix Legends as one of the Four Horsemen of sim racing greatness. A fantastic sim. Not for the faint of heart, but rewarding as hell.
Valentin K gave it a9:
A wheel is compulsory, as well as the concentration and patience needed to make this game work for you. Once you do get to grips with it... you will find it to be one of the most enjoyable and greatest "games" that you have played. If you want a proper challenge, something unusual and unique - get this.
Peter O gave it a10:
It's been a long time since Warthog (the British-Swedish team that made RBR) went bye-bye. But fans of this "game", that is, if you believe it is a game, made of the best simulation app something even more exciting. Designers and programmers have added to this sim the most outstanding upgrades you can envision. Whoever dares to try RBR should be warned that it is not a game, it's a simulation that we drivers use as a game! As someone pointed out years ago: if you don't know how to drive fast in real life, this is not for you!
mono 808 gave it a9:
The graphics are good and give a very nice feeling of speed. the physics are excellent and it really reminds u of driving a real car. speeding with 100mph through a forest while a single crash could end ur championship gives a feeling of excitement i never felt before in a racing game. the game is mostly about controlling ur self, as u allways tend to drive too fast. it takes quite a while until ur really able to control ur car, but it's woth it. its the best rally simulation out there. compared to rbr, colin mcrae rally is just crap, and i never played cmr again. but if u don't have a steering wheel with pedals u should try another racing game.
Paul M. gave it a10:
A stunning achievement. Expect to put some serious hours into getting used to the ultra-realistic and ultra-unforgiving handling and physics engine, but its ultimately a rewarding process. On top of the handling the game sports fantastic graphics (plays fine with my 1800xp Radeon 9000 system), spot-on tracks that feel oh so narrow and go by very quickly and good sound. Do yourself a favor and play this on a force feedback wheel - the range of road feedback effects is remarkable. An under appreciated classic!
Chris S. gave it a10:
A truly great simulation and the only real Rally simulator out there. If you enjoy this type of motorsport you owe it to yourself to pick it up. Plays nicely at 1280x1024 on my p4 3.0 and geforce 7800 gs oc agp card.
Gargantula K. gave it a10:
Very realistic game. When I watch the replays I feel like I am watching a TV broadcast. If you love to race in real life, buy this game. If you aren't good at driving real cars in life, don't buy this game.*Points at D. Jury* The rally school wasn't hard at all.
