Summary

In the far off distant future, four homin races struggle for survival on the plant of Atys. Known as the 'living planet', Atys is growing and evolving on its own, sending tendrils into the sky and covering the lands with new life. This lush and vibrant world is the setting for The Saga of Ryzom, a multi-genre massively-multiplayer online game which is played out over a period of eight years during which players will be able to explore and adventure with thousands of others, in order to reveal the hidden mysteries not only of Atys, but of the entire Ryzom universe. Join the Saga, reveal the history and become the future. [Nevrax]

GameZone

With good graphics, great gameplay and concept behind the game, and overall decent sounds this one might be right for many of the MMORPG fans who have been waiting for a good title.

Even tasks as trivial as harvesting can give hours and hours of joy as you tweak your actions to maximize your material take or your experience take. The community is welcoming and player progression gives you a constantly changing group of people around to play with.

IGN

Has the potential to turn into a real contender, but not until they smooth out player introduction, get some more players on board (a Catch .22, granted), take care of network lag, and introduce quests to make gameplay more rewarding and better paced overall.

Just RPG

The graphics are really nice and distinctive, the back story intriguing and immersive. The stanza system a superb way of letting each player not only level his char but also create his own set of customised actions. No need to rely only on what the devs thought your char should have. The game has come a long way since the beta that left me unconvinced. Fighting is more exciting and gratifying than it used to be. But the game still feels a bit unpolished, incomplete and the devs would better deliver on all the promised content.

PC Gamer

There's virtually no plot, and a lot of the mid-level game seems like a repeat of the novice-level game. [Jan 2005, p.84]

RealGamer

While The Saga of Ryzom is probably more simplistic then most MMORPG's its a lot more approachable to those new to the genre, however this is likely to deter those looking for something to challenge them.

Games Radar UK (Pre-2006)

A slow starter. However, it's a huge world which is full of big ideas. Jump in now for a game that promises to be an interesting take on a staid genre - or hold fire a month or two to see how it lives up to its promises. [PC Gamer UK]

Computer Gaming World

The only thing missing from Ryzom's customizable battling, harvesting, and crafting systems is a lack of bothersome bugs. [Jan 2005, p.102]

GameSpot

The latest unfinished massively multiplayer role-playing game to be inflicted upon gamers. Its unrefined gameplay is too simplistic to have enduring appeal and yet, paradoxically, its character-development system is needlessly complex.

PC Format

Currently it's flawed, and despite glimmers of competence, the imbalanced combat, terrible connection problems, and lack of reason to play leave the score far lower than a properly finished game might have achieved. [Dec 2004, p.97]

Unfortunately the game misses the mark on so many issues that gameplay is behind even the current market leaders which are at least 2 years old.

Computer Games Magazine

For a game with such amazing art direction, innovative game ideas, and a dedicated developer, it's a shame that it pimps you down unfairly and destroys your entertainment with double-digit deaths. [Feb 2005, p.69]

Jim D. gave it a 3:
I wanted to like this game, I really did but I can't. The premise is great, the ideas and fresh approaches are great, but the actual implementation of those ideas are failures. While the grapics are nice they are not that great nor are they revolutionary in any sense of the word. On a scale of 1 to 10 the graphics rate a 6. The game is still raw and very unpolished. You will find code over many irtems and creatures in the game instead of the actual names, quit a bit of the interface is unfinished. Four races that are for all intents and purposes identical except in appearance. Mobs for each land again, for the most part identical. The actual game play is interesting foir only a short while. Then is becomes mind numbingly redundant. Very little to no interaction available with NPC. Yes there are missions but are the go get this for me types. Nothing new there. There are 2 patches planned at this time to fix and add content that are suppose to address many if the issues brought up here, I ask why I have to pay $50 for a game thats released to the public that already has 2 patches planned to addressed UNFINISHED aspects? I understand MMORGs are patched frequently, however these patches are not really fixes but things that should have been implemented before shipping. Another open beta released for $50 and dumped on the MMORG fans. Too bad really, I had high hopes and expectations for this game. With EQ2 and WoW right around the corner, save your money.

Tom B. gave it a 3:
One word: unfinished. more words: unbalanced, 4 races in game are the same - 4 graphically distinct homeworlds of races are same when comes to monsters. Generally - no one had time to think and code internals of this game - avoid for at least 1 year (if it survives this long).

K. Japhet gave it a 10:
This is the most refreshing game to have come along in a long time. It sets the bar higher for all the MMOG's that have to follow in it's footsteps.

Andrew B. gave it a 10:
The guy that gave Ryzom a 3 has no idea what a good MMO should be.

Ewande D. gave it a 3:
I found this MMORPG to be mostly a rehash of what others did before. It's mostly the same stuff as you'll find in any such game albeit with different graphics. Although they are quite nice and the universe is very original, the gameplay itself is intensely boring. Nothing to see if you've already played Everquest or DAoC. If you're looking for a change of setting as well as a dash of gameplay originality, you'd better move on to World of Warcraft or City of Heroes. Unfortunately, Ryzom doesn't have what it takes to make it.

Brant H. gave it a 10:
GGGREAT!
