(Currently available in the UK/EU only) SCAR, Squadra Corse Alfa Romeo, is a racing simulation which combines both realistic car physics, and vibrant graphics together with classic Role Playing Game elements to become the first 'CARPG' ever developed. For the first time in a racing game, players must improve their skills as drivers instead of modifying their cars, making the ability to match a set of skills to the different requirements of each competition just as much an important part of winning the race. In addition to choosing their favourite Alfa Romeo, players will be given the opportunity to choose their own race gear which will best improve their performance, as well as tune the levels of each of their different skills which will include: reflexes, hand-eye coordination, and their ability to cope with the stress of racing high speed circuits. Another unique skill is the Tiger Effect, which will give drivers the ability to turn back time and correct any potentially dangerous mistakes. In SCAR, AI competitors are also based on a complex combination of skills and features which come together to form an opponent best adapted to the cars, course, and player, giving rise to countless alternative outcomes. The actual skill system is based on nine different abilities, divided into three tiers of experience. [Black Bean Games]

Unfortunately this is all buried benath one of those interfaces designed for console users, not us PC gamers with mice and keyboards. [Aug 2005, p.87]

Apart from the difficulty, SCAR feels rather consoley in its presentation, and of course the only cars you get to drive here are Alfa Romeos. So, you have to ask yourself, are you a fan of Alfas and driving sims? [PC Zone]

Squadra Corse Alfa Romeo can be enjoyable. It can also be tedious, frustrating and annoying. Oddly, it will please neither hardcore simulation fans nor arcade aficionados, retaining a strange, albeit mildly pleasing, line in between the two.

Some elements work well and we can see how the idea may progress. However, as a straight racer, this can’t compete with the flurry of recent quality titles. [July 2005, p.108]

It’s possible you’d rather claw out your eyes and squash them with a hammer than play a game as dreary as this.

No matter how desperate you are for PC racing action, you should not turn to SCAR. The console alternatives are simply far too strong. As a last resort, you can always bank the money you would have spent on it and wait until it has accrued enough interest for you to buy a PlayStation 2 and Gran Turismo 4.

Jussi gave it a9:
I like this game a lot. At first I was ready to pull my hair out, because the cars were so hard to control. But once you get into developing your driver, the game turns into one of the most addictive racing games ever made.
