This is a classic game that deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as "F-19," "Longbow 2," and "European Air War."

"Dangerous Waters" is a superb modern naval combat simulator but Silent Hunter III is destined to be a Sim Hall of Fam all-time classic. [June 2005, p.94]
PC Gameworld
As it is, Silent Hunter III is easily the best submarine simulation ever made.

Might as well be called "Das Boot - the game". Not only does it simulate the hardware realistically, the atmosphere is so thick you can almost slice it. This is exactly how simulators should be made to attract the casual crowd as well as the hardcore sim nuts. [May 05]
3DAvenue
Without a doubt this game is a must have for any Naval Simulation fan, the flexibility in complexity has so much to offer that allows for beginner all the way through to expert.

The best simulation we've played in years. It retains accessibility while offering remarkable levels of detail and realism... It is visually attractive, aurally satisfying and quite simply a breathtaking experience.

Quite simply the best submarine game ever, and it will provide months of entertainment.

A gem of a simulation game; for that matter it’s easily one of the top war games of ALL TIME.

A final word about the dynamic campaign: it's incredible... This mode could keep some people going for years. [June 2005, p.64]
Loaded Inc
The settings enable you to play either a relatively easy game war, or, for the hardcore submarine fan, enjoy a situation in which you are responsible for literally every aspect of the submarine’s function.

Silent Hunter III is the "Das Boot" of gaming. An undeniable classic. [May 2005, p 86]
Jolt Online Gaming UK
Invest some time in Silent Hunter III, learn how to play it properly, find out what all of the dials do and memorise all of the keyboard shortcuts and it will pay you back with countless hours of cinematic, realistic, and brilliant gameplay. But remember, this ain’t for the casual gamer.

There's plenty of visceral thrill in wading into the middle of a convoy at night and letting loose with your deck gun. [July 2005, p.64]
GameSpot
It lets you feel like you are a submarine captain in charge of a powerful but fragile U-boat, it provides a sobering history lesson, and the campaign makes you feel like you are a small but important part of a much larger conflict. Those are the hallmarks of a truly great simulation.

Definitely worth the wait. The campaign is fantastic and the overall presentation is a sim fan's dream.

From the ridiculous to the sublime: one for fans of undersea combat. [June 2005, p.98]
IC-Games
Silent Hunter III is not really my sort of game but I was totally immersed in it. It is as complete a Submarine Sim as I would think it’s possible to get.

Silent Hunter 3 is without a doubt a step forward for the series, not just regarding graphics but through the introduction of new game options as well.

You will be able to control almost every single aspect of what went on during World War II campaigns to see if you have what it takes to be a good commander and stay alive.

The AI puts up a good fight at the higher realism settings, and should you wish to throw caution to the wind and try manual torpedo solutions, you'll either be in maths heaven, or find your brain oozing from your ears (or both). Don't worry - it's a lot more fun than it sounds.

Strikes a careful balance between accessibility and the hideous complexity. And it looks good doing it.

Peerless as a simulator, no doubt about it, but as a game it has its failings. Despite the efforts of the developers, it is doubtful that anyone who is not at least partly interested in the simulation aspects of the game will enjoy it at all.

Unless you've harbored a fantasy all your life to be a Captain of your very own submarine, you probably won't derive too much enjoyment from this exceptionally hardcore simulation.

Nick R gave it a10:
Amazing game , the atmosphere was brilliantly done, I felt like I was living out all the history books I read. Being able to calculate my own torpedo shoots was nice. Finally getting to use geometry and calculus in a compy game.
Charles D gave it an8:
Is a really fun game, but the campaign mode could be more varying.
Mark W. gave it a5:
Great game! Spent many hours tracking down a convoy trying to get the perfect angle of attack. Spent many more hours trying to evade the 3 destroyers who were triangulating my position and tearing me up with charges. I would have given it a 9 but StarForce problems knock it down to a 5.
grimpr . gave it a9:
A Groundbreaking game in the simulations genre with great value in the test of time and money spend,be sure to patch it to the latest official patch and get a taste from some countless modifications that overhaul nearly everything in this superb game. A PC Classic.
Sam F. gave it a10:
Gamers Who Enjoy Realistic Simulations will truly enjoy This Sub Sim. This Game might turn away a few people that are used to all out action all the time, but if your willing to put yourself into this game and spend hours that are needed hunting enemy subs and use tactical manuvers then you will agree that this might be the best looking sim out there to date. Graphically the Sky and ocean look like your looking at a movie. If you play this game and find that getting to your patrol point takes too long you have the option of time compression but that would spoil the point of this whole sim. Traveling to the destionation and engaging the will take hours ...just like in real life. There are a few surprises that really add to the realism such as when you go to outside views. zooming in and out will not let you go through objects like most other games ... So the collision detection even in view mode is set correctly. The interior of the ship is done nicely showing all gages and areas of the ship but not as photorealistic as the envirement outside. The next installment of SILENT hUNTER Should address this one area...but With everything this Sim has going for it It is a must buy for any fan of this genre.
Greg N. gave it a7:
The game is really good...i really enjoy submarine type games. The only down side to the game is the waiting times between action, even with time compression the game is very slow. The keyboard layout is good, and sound effects are okay...you do need 1 gig of ram to run the game, as I am running 512 megs or ram and it takes a long time for the game to load, and locks up occasionally when you are in game and an event is occuring i.e. detecting a ship that sort a thing...but once the game is loaded it works fine with 512!
Peter S. gave it a9:
This is underwater suspence at it's best! Considering the frailty of your boat, crew fatigue and a limited number of torpedoes (and limited fuel if you carefor some realism) you have to worry about much more than just sinking ships. Your crew and your boat depend on your decisions. Oh, and did I mention great graphics and sound (superb hydrophone!) and the moddability of SHIII? Did miss depth charts though, but that's nothing the navigator can't handle. There's not much room to improve this U-boat sim.
