Summary
(Currently available in the UK/EU only) Spells of Gold is Role-playing game set in the world of fantasy, inhabited by elves, dwarves, the undead and other fantastic creatures. The game universe is large indeed. It consists of a number of separate worlds. Each one has several states, which represent isolated economic and political systems. The Hero is able to teleport from one world to another through special space Portals. His main activity is trade, buying goods in one town and selling or exchanging them in another. For this purpose our Hero has got a special item - a Magic Sack of Monroke. Thanks to that, he can easily carry vast amounts of goods. Much has to be undertaken before the Hero can find more advantageous trade routes and get significant profit. On his way, he is going to meet with robbers and bandits, warlocks and undead, tax collectors and envious competitors, hired assassins and wandering warriors. It is easy to guess, that every such meeting will hardly end peacefully. To feel sure and ready for any unexpected accident and adventure, the Hero may choose one of the given ways: he may develop and master his fighting habits and become a Warrior, or he may acquire some magic skills and dwell into mysterious and strange world of the Secret Learning. Regardless of the choice, there is a plenty of schools and teachers, ready to share their knowledge in exchange of a good sum of money. As developing his skills and habits, the Hero gets a chance to join one of the Guilds - mighty unions that beside other advantages encourage their members to develop and perfect themselves. While travelling and trading, fighting and gaining experience, the Hero gradually comprehends the very essence of the Universe. The whole history of the world-creation and the way to change it is revealed to him. The Hero participates in the eternal battle between the Good and the Evil, unravels the mystery of the Dark Alliance, or even finds the inconceivable Way of the Chosen... [Buka Entertainment]

Gamer's Hell
The biggest problem is that the very different genre elements just dont seem to co-exist very well within the confines of a game containing little cohesive structure. Because of that fact, the saddest part about Spells of Golds inadequacies is that I dont even know, specifically, to whom I could recommend it.

I really enjoyed Spells of Gold. It is a technically stunted title on the surface, but a very addictive and satisfying gaming experience at its core.

Only hardcore fans of the trading genre will want to give this a game a look. The retro look and feel will probably not appeal to most of todays PC gamers.

Had we been given a central index of towns and their import and export prices then we may have been talking about a different game, but what is also needed is a stronger, more involving plot to keep the player interested and eager to get to the next step.

The postman aspect of the game is boring, and ultimately trivial. The combat is uninspiring, as are the enemies despite how tough they get as you progress. Graphically, its a step backwards. These are a confluence of ideas that havent been brought to fruition with much care.

It's almost like the developer has taken a shabby old isometric RPG, removed the central storyline and replaced all the side-quests with banal cash-based courier missions. By "Elite" standards, this isn't even competent.

Its is in fact a basic trading game, but rather than embrace this medium it seems the makers got scared and have attempted to half heartedly attach a substandard role playing game onto it. This results in the whole experience feeling half done with no areas allowed to shine.

[Anonymous] gave it a 10:
It is a great game no matter what some ''graphics is the most important'' gamers said!
Dennis B. gave it a 5:
Nice concept with trade in order to accumulate wealth. I also liked the way of character evuloution by buying specialised training. However the travel between towns is handled abstractly and becomes teadious after a while. The same applies to the combat sequences. The encountered monsters are usually found utside the city gates and will seldom vary in number or strength.
