Best of all is the vicious melee attack, dealt out with a forearm blade. It's enough to make the Fett family green with envy.

Gamezilla!

On the negative side, Republic Commando is extremely short, and extremely brutal.

Jolt Online Gaming UK

Republic Commando does so much right – the squad-based elements do enough to add another dimension to the game without bogging down the action; the Star Wars presentation is executed brilliantly; the action and set-pieces have been designed and paced superbly.

A blast, albeit a short one. The action is very intense and the tactical elements, while light, are easy to grasp.

Xequted

The game’s artificial intelligence is impressive, and utilising the commands and setting team command points through the levels really makes it feel like you’re working through the game with real people who actually know what they are doing.

ActionTrip

The near-flawless squad-based combat comes at a certain price. The levels often feel very limiting, highly railed, and brimming with scripted sequences. They never even attempt to create the illusion of non-linearity.

GameSpot

A pedestrian and unimaginative multiplayer mode is the only notable flaw in a game that otherwise plays, looks, and sounds fantastic.

Worth Playing

An exquisitely produced and incredibly fun first-person romp through the Star Wars universe with a blaster rifle in hand.

Game Chronicles

The squad-based gameplay is here but its execution has been greatly simplified making the game much more accessible to the casual gamer and probably a bit insulting to Clancy veterans.

Game Over Online

One of those titles that will appeal to action gamers and some strategy players alike. Although it’s a short single player experience, Commando packs a ton of action into every minute, and gamers will enjoy every minute of it.

Don’t be turned off by the Jedi-free element to this game. Republic Commando proves that the Star Wars universe has a lot more to offer, and ideas at LucasArts are still abundant.

Play Magazine

Tactical, yet just as fun as any single-player romp, skillfully laid out and nicely scored, Star Wars: Republic Commando lives up to its billing and them some. [March 2005, p.55]

GameBiz

Voice acting is outstanding; your character is even voiced by Temuera Morrison, Jango Fett himself.

A decent first person shooter, which manages to paint the Star Wars universe from a different perspective, a move which is to be commended, since originality is something very rare in most of today’s games.

Inside Gamer Online

The squad ethic has been applied solidly to fast-paced action that is sure to appeal to any serious action gamer. If you can overlook the short, 10-hour campaign and a multiplayer component barely worth mentioning, then RC is an easy recommendation.

Presentation is really what carries Republic Commando farther than it could have gone on its own. It comes with a grand score, good voice work, lovely animation, and great artistic style and polish.

PC Format

Fortunately, the action is so focused, the squad dynamic so intuitive and the banter so entertaining that you won't stop to consider the game's failings... The best Star Wars prequel game yet. [March 2005, p.92]

Still, given the intensity of the combat, you won't have a lot of time to brood over the sometimes monotonous environments. Somebody deserves credit for making a gritty, Jedi-free Star Wars game without any fruity Force powers or lightsabers.

The multiplayer game is subpar and under populated, but the single-player game is slick, polished, frantic, and exciting.

It's not without its flaws -- a lack of tactical depth and disappointing multiplayer are chief among them -- but it's gripping and spectacular to play, and certainly one of the better Star Wars games on the market.

As a promotional tool for Revenge of the Sith, it's spectacular. I'd not previously been particularly excited for Episode III, but if the machinations alluded to in the game really are those that drive the mythology forward, it's going to be a spectacular finale to the series.

Pelit (Finland)

The weapons are seriously underpowered and the enemies are as uninteresting as they come. The command system seems very simplistic at first, but turns out to be one of the game's strong points. [Mar. 05]

Games Radar (in-house)

It's great that you can run and gun without too much squad-commanding hassle, but SW:RC's simplicity is its biggest problem. Gamers hoping to give their brain a workout will be disappointed.

The final product of Star Wars Republic Commando is one that tops any other Lucas Arts game in recent years. Although the meager campaign of ten hours is shorter than I would have liked, I still enjoyed the majority of the time I spent blasting battle droids.

A stylish experience which fans of the movie will appreciate, but there’s just not enough substance let alone difference for the vast majority of action fans to warrant yet another first-person purchase.

The second problem is that your squad will heal each other and you: you "die" only when your entire squad has been felled. [Apr 2005, p.76]

60

Gamer's Hell

Though the multiplayer aspect of the game is beyond pathetic, the single player campaign is a mildly entertaining diversion from the drudgery of office paperwork. If that sounds like a limp endorsement for an action game, then that's because this is a pretty limp excuse for an action game.

games(TM)

If you go with the flow of how you’re supposed to play Republic Commando this can be good fun. It is, after all, a Star Wars game and, for this reason alone, a small proportion of gamers will enjoy it. But pleasing a small number of gamers hardly sounds like the policy of the kind of republic we’d like to live in. [March 2005, p.96]

60

GameShark

Provides eight to ten hours of streamlined, yet predictable gameplay. It's not a revolutionary title by any stretch of the imagination and it's vastly overpriced at $50, but it's worth recommending for a Star Wars action fan with money to burn and time to kill.

Edge Magazine

Encounters feel needlessly protracted - born of a stubborn refusal to admit the game’s fundamental lack of content. The layout of scenery predetermines your every gambit before enemies blithely meander into your squad’s unlimited gunfire. [Apr 2005, p.101]

Computer Games Magazine

A game of moderately tactical chaos. [June 2005, p.55]

J W gave it an8:
Great gameplay, frantic at times and at others quite calculated. The tactical element is streamlined perfectly. A decent selection of weapons. Characters are quite unique, shows a very different portrayal of clone troopers. Definitely one of the best Star Wars games to date. However, far too short. Here's hoping for a number 2 with more content.

raugee gave it a10:
Not for everyone. It's a straightforward cut into a clone troopers' life where there's only one command: to push on no matter what. The game has humour, great locales, brilliant soundtrack and soundscape, fantastic atmosphere and high tension action. Something that more mature SW fans enjoy.

Nick C. gave it a10:
This is my all time favorite game for PC. Incredible gameplay, like Halo but better!!!

Paul H. gave it a9:
The game is too short it could do with a few more missions there should be an operation to rescue delta 07.

Billy H. gave it a10:
The best starwars game yet.

Manuel H. gave it a9:
I love this game. It is funny, has action, great handling of the squad. There is only one drawback: It is too short.

Chet S. gave it a10:
An inmaginative, fun-filled, action-packed game from start to finish. I very much enjoyed this game and still delight in playing a round or two of capture the flag almost everyday. This game has proved to be challenging at some points but not crossing the line over to frustration ever. On od my favorite games. A must have for any FPS fan and even some stategy fans.
