Summary
More than just another modern tank simulation. This design effort goes further than any before it to accurately model real-world conditions and tactics -- but in a way as to not overwhelm the novice, would-be tanker with a zillion key combinations and an overwhelming interface. [Shrapnel Games]

PC Gameworld
Yet another indie game that totally blows away what the faceless corporations put out.

Perhaps the best modern tank simulator on the market.
PC Gamer
This is the best tank simulation you can buy, and maybe the best one ever. [Dec 2000, p.170]
Electric Playground
Yes, there's a fairly steep learning curve, and yes, accelerated simulations such as "M1 Tank Platoon II" might look a smidgen better, but those are minor quibbles. If you like tank simulations, or have ever thought you might like tank simulations, this is the game for you.

It combines both simulation and wargaming elements to produce a superb gaming experience.

Steel Beasts is fun, deep and challenging, everything a good simulation should be. That it was developed, in large part, by a single person in their spare time should be a lesson to the rest of the industry. It won't, but it should be.

A no-frills tank sim that has a very solid base but not a great deal in terms of extras or window-dressing. Tank sim fans will find this a pleasing and detailed addition to their collection but anyone who is looking for the latest graphics, frantic shooting or options by the bucketload will not find them here.

If you're up to its challenges, Steel Beasts offers an accurate, involving, and rewarding simulation of modern tank warfare.

My biggest complaint with SB is that there is no sort of story line to go with the game.

The hardcore fan will be rewarded after investing plenty of time exploring the depths of the simulation, which makes it a worthwhile endeavor. Outflanking the enemy and unleashing a devastating shelling barrage has rarely been this enjoyable.

The best simulation of modern tank (and maybe just tank, period) operations ever.

No 3d acceleration, but the mission editor gives unlimited amounts of gameplay for both novices and experts alike.

Though Steel Beasts sets new standards as a multiplayer tank sim, it is specifically focused on that area to the exclusion of all others.

Koga gave it a9:
Although the graphics aren't the best, the game has great gameplay multiplayer capibility.
Ash D. gave it a10:
Best Tank Sim Ever and will always be on top.
[2D]Bluewings gave it a 10:
This Simulation separates the Men from the boys . Steel Beasts is used to train real Tank crews in many Forces around the World .
Hell Hound gave it a 9:
Your first impression will be the dated graphics. Then you'll be hooked by the amazingly realistic sounds, and then you'll be totally addicted as the immersive game play pulls you in. No combat game puts you in the middle of a tactical problem as thrillingly and completely as Steel Beasts - start learning now so you're ready for the release of SB2! :)
REN 623 gave it a 10:
This Game Definitely rocks.
Jimm G. gave it a 2:
Graphics suck unrealistic weapons/features.
Olle P. gave it an 8:
I agree with the others that this is *the* tank *simulator*, so far. (SB2, to be released late 2003 will be even better.) It's not that great as a *game* though, only very very good. There still are some issues that IMO doesn't make it a 10 though. Most of these are the result of lacking implementation time and/or CPU power. * Limited terrain features. No paved roads and no bridges, two dominant features in most terrain. * Very limited tactical AI capabilities (can spot, shoot and take cover, but that's about it) and no strategic AI whatsoever. This is a deliberate design feature, but makes single player scenario design a bit more complicated. * "Skins/textures" can be easily modified to ones own liking. This is an ambivalent feature. You can make/use even more realistic looks if you want the challenge, or you can make all opponent vehicles bright orange, giving you a definite edge in spotting... - The lack of air assets is a deliberate blessing. A flight of helicopters (about a dozen) would make the battle very one sided; either the helicopters spotted the tanks first, wiping them out, or the other way around... - Another great feature is the huge multiplayer support. The program support up to 360 players per side (Max 180 tanks per side, two players/tank), but the actual limitation lies in bandwidth available and server CPU power.
