Summary
Become a stranger in the magical world, lead armies of mysterious creatures, and fight for your immortal soul. Every fantasy world has its epic story; Stranger's is of no exception. But it is not just the usual conflict between light and darkness, there are much more nuances to explore. Choose your side, gain experience to extend your abilities, unravel secrets of magic world, and crush your enemies either by skills or by using brute force, if you have any. Some of the best heroes are at your service, hordes of land and underground creatures want you to lead them to victory. Proper battle tactics and planning strategy, using of diplomacy, gaining benefits of trading, using of magic - all of these components will help you to win in just one case: you should find out what the goal is. When you are attempting to implement two gameplay styles then you'd better be careful that there are no distractions or irritations to the player, or the tentative grip a game has to build upon will be lost. Stranger is still just clutching out with a gauntleted hand.

Part of me feels the need to defend this game, as I find myself almost feeling sorry for it. It's like a well-meaning kid that , because of inadequate parents, didn't get the break it deserves.

Bearing in mind that you’ll need to do some serious thinking, Stranger is otherwise a pretty thoughtful game and one that is worth a good many hours play. [Mar 2008, p.62]
IGN
While it does fuse elements of real-time strategy and role-playing games, it doesn’t do it with any genuine measure of success.

A role playing game that poses as a strategy by using just the numbers. This means that your adventuring party can have as many as twenty or thirty members, and you have to take care of every soldier's needs and wants, from armor to magic crystals to retirement plans. The game's ugly looks combined with the unintelligible interface and bad AI make the whole thing marginally playable in the best moments and huge pain in the posterior in the worst. [Apr 2008]
GameSpot
Stranger is one of strangest games of this year. Or any other year, for that matter.

A startlingly awful interface. [June 2008, p.89]
PC Zone UK
Stranger looks remarkably terrible and plays worse. The game is just hideously optimised...Stranger takes the fantasy RTS genre backwards before breaking it. [Apr 2006, p.81]
