Summary
A series of grisly murders brings Lara into conflict with a sinister Alchemist from the past, and a secret alliance of powerful individuals shrouded in mystery. At the center of these mysteries are the Obscura Paintings - five 14th century pieces of art that the Alchemist is desperate to repossess. Accused of the murder of her one time mentor, Werner Von Croy, Lara becomes a fugitive on the run. Pursued by the police, she follows the Alchemist into a dark world of blood, betrayal and vengeance where it is up to her to defeat this unholy alliance, and stop them from unleashing their incredible powers on the world. Pregaming
Even with TR’s faults, this game is quite enjoyable for new people to the TR universe. Old fans will just be ecstatic over the story and the chance to play a 21st century version of Lara Croft.

Unlike previous Tomb Raider games that presented you with a handful of secrets items, areas, or unlockable bonus content, there is nothing here beyond the core game (no pun intended). There are no branching paths, multiple endings or any reason to replay the game anytime soon after your first pass.

The gameplay fails on so many different levels, and that’s a shame given how good the other elements are in the game.

Hard-core Tomb Raider fans and other particularly patient players should be able to overlook some of these flaws and enjoy this new installment for its engaging storyline, death-defying action sequences, and impressive locations.

Production values in the graphics and sound are excellent. The attention to detail, from the rich textures to the symphonic score, is nothing short of brilliance. If only the game played as good as it looks and sounds.
GameShark
Outside of the updated graphics and the introduction of the new playable character, Kurtis, I really didn't see anything new brought to the game which is a major disappointment.

Holds close the qualities that made the first two game so likeable, but it similarly retains many, if not all, of the same mechanics, gameplay tactics and problems that dragged the series down over the years.

The twitchy controls mean that instant death is just a flick of the analog stick away, and even though we’re not psychic, we can guarantee you’ll die many, many times just trying to either work out where you’ve got to go or nab yourself a handful of bonus items.

This game certainly isn't breaking any new ground, neither have the past few that came before it.

Infuriating, buggy, and ultimately boring. [Oct 2003, p.96]
ActionTrip
The controls handle like utter crap and will remain a continuous nuisance throughout the entire game. Seriously, when it comes to character control I've never witnessed such a badly managed a port.

A festering pustule of dreadfulness. [June 2006, p.97]
Computer Games Magazine
There's almost no connection between your keypresses and Lara's movements on-screen. It feels like she's moving through molasses. [Sept 2003, p.74]
Entertainment Weekly
At times, maneuvering Lara is like steering a battered shopping cart; Lara often takes a half second to react to commands. [18 July 2003, p.82]
Computer Gaming World
And thus gaming's highest-profile franchise is run into the ground and kicked repeatedly in the head. [Oct 2003, p.118]
GameNow
The PC version has better visuals, more comfortable control, and fewer bugs. And online patches might stamp out the bugs that do exist. [Sept 2003, p.51]

Jon M. gave it a0:
Easily the most awkward game in the world. Looks great, however controls are as easy to master as a three wheeled shopping trolley on ice.
Delegate gave it a10:
love the game. Yes indeed it is the most advanced and most interesting lara Croft game yet. But I think Tomb Raider 4 is still the best but the new Lara Rocks. I had no troubles with the controls because I am a fan of lara and I have played TR 3,TR 4 TR Chronicles and I now have finished TR TAOD. Everyone should try this one.
Chris C. gave it a 1:
Horrible game for PC - you can barely control the Character - Complete waste of money - eidos and core are destroying the franchise by not caring what garbage they are pumping out - stop worrying about making crappy movies and start worrying about making a lasting franchise by having good games - completely horrible and buggy - DONT BUY .
Chris s gave it a 9:
Out of all the Tomb Raider games, Angel of Darkness is far and away the most beautiful, in fact it is one of the finest looking games I have ever played. If you like Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider style of gaming then you should certainly pick-up Angel of Darkness. I highly recommend it.
Matt R. gave it an 8:
Very good graphics, can be buggy at times and a bit weired,on some levels you go through doors and its total darkness like the game hasent been made properly, its ok on 32mb graphics but better on 64mb crappy graphics on a ati radeon mobility when you go thrugh steam and lightining effects its get on your nerves. The game is awesome and good sound good fighting and steath moves very good.
Dream gave it an 8:
true.. not ground breaking by any means.. but still its the tomb raider i've been waiting for! the one that is rivalled only by the games first and second outing! Controls are nice aside when you're running up and down stairs.. and you don't fall off ledges easily! [against a point raised by Total Games!] Graphics are pleasing and music are melodic and atmospheric!! Good review for a good game :D
Lara Croft gave it a 10:
This is the best game I've ever played. I LOVE IT! I wait for the seventh part.
