Summary
In 2013, the U.S. Army will implement the Integrated Warfighter System (IWS), evolving what we know as the modern soldier. IWS combines advanced weapon systems, satellite communication devices and enhanced survivability into one fully integrated combat system. The IWS program has been developed to meet these new threats head on. Now, it can be tested on the battlefield. Following an insurgence in the heart of Mexico City, the U.S. Army's most elite Special Forces team is deployed to the center of the conflict to regain control of the city. Greatly outnumbered but fully equipped with the IWS, this elite team is the first and last line of defense on the battlefield. They are the "Quiet" professionals. They are the Ghosts. Gain access to the future of military technology. Using a fully integrated combat system with cutting-edge weapons and revolutionary communication systems, gamers embody the soldier of the future. Based on actual U.S. Army research, the Ghosts give gamers a realistic view of how war will be fought in the next decade. Use the revolutionary Cross-Com, a communication device powered by satellite technology. Attached to the soldier's monocle, the Cross-Com provides full situational awareness and command of the battlefield. Command the Ghost squad and remote allied forces and drones, and direct artillery and air strikes. See what the squad sees and receive visual and auditory intel from allied forces and unmanned drones. [Ubisoft]

Worth Playing
Whereas I found GRAW for the X360 to be the best 360 game I've played thus far in the console's lifetime, GRAW for the PC has immediately earned a top spot among my personal pantheon of greatest games.

The world is fully realised, it feels solid and vibrant. The enemies are smart, the allies are smarter.

With 16 players and 16 guns blazing, the game is violent bliss, and certainly a war demanding to be fought over and over again. [Apr 2006, p.58]
1UP
As a package, it's an incredibly complete product of flabbergasting quality; more than any other game, GRAW puts the player in the nerve-snapping tension of pauses between engagements. It thrusts you into the terror of modern, quicksilver-fluid combat.

A demanding and gratifying shooter that brings a new level of seriousness to the Ghost Recon franchise. And, perhaps more importantly, restores it to the good graces of PC owners. Provided they've got the horsepower.

All it does is present some interesting tactical action, a lot of graphically impressive--if somewhat too amber-colored--carnage, and a lot of intense pointing and shooting. And that's more than enough. [Sept. 2006, p.55]
Digital Entertainment News
As shooters go, Ghost Recon is one of the best. Bettered possibly only by "Half-Life 2," this is one for the collection.

Shooter fans will be sure to find this a very intensifying enjoyable experience. If you have a monster of a machine to game on, this title will be sure to please.

Each level is varied and different from the last, and is easily capable of generating excitement and tension when they see fit.

GRAW is sadly flawed but despite these flaws is terrific fun to play. It's wildly addictive as you try and work out the best way through and once you've gotten used to your useless team (we had a team member throw himself under a moving APC..that's talent) it's an excellent tactical shooter.

Looks great and is one of the better tactical shooters in recent history. [June 2006]
IGN
Yes, I was sick of the same old brown city by the end of the game and, yes, I did hate the stupid checkpoints, but the rest of the game is so enjoyable that I still found myself smiling in spite of those frustrations.

It never quite manages to be an excellent tactical shooter, nor is it the most action-oriented of titles, but by combining thoughtful gameplay with some simply brilliant and explosive set-pieces, Ubisoft has managed to create a compelling single player experience.

A compelling experience that knows how to get the action spot-on, immersing the player in a well staged, believable conflict from start-to-finish.

Superlative urban combat, held back by poor AI and some grinding levels. [June 2006, p.80]
Games Radar (in-house)
GRAW may be too realistic for gamers that prefer arcadey, twitchy shooters. Its gritty realism and requirement for a methodical approach borders on obsessive-compulsive. For players who appreciate a "thinking man's shooter," it simply cannot be missed.

It's not impossible to play if you aren't a perfect infantry tactician, while still placing a heavy emphasis on proper strategy on the battlefield.

With more online modes, functional interface, and voice chat, the 360 is easily the superior version. Even the PS2 and regular Xbox have voice chat. Until a major patch restores everything that is missing on the PC, GRAW is better suited as a tech demo to test next year's line-up of video cards.

Given Ubi's reputation and the game's undeniable success on the Xbox 360, we were disappointed to encounter so many technical disadvantages. This will undoubtedly ward off a majority of gamers, especially those who had their heart set on playing a decent bug-free PC game.

While the PC version of GRAW offers the most impressive and expansive campaign, the extreme system requirements and multiplayer headaches make this tactical shooter feel rougher around the edges than it should.

There isn't one big problem that keeps this game from becoming truly exceptional; instead, it's a collection of small issues that will likely cause a few moments of frustration and anger.

GRAW's bipolar AI makes the single-player campaiggn a punishing excercise in babysitting. [Sep 2006, p.44]
PC Gamer UK
A few too many flaws in the basic design to ever by anything more than a waypoint to the next soldier sim. [July 2006, p.88]
2404.org
It has morphed from a wide-open, somewhat abstract tactical simulation to a linear action game with squad elements tacked on. It's a sad symptom of a franchise that used to be focused on providing entertaining white-knuckle tactical shooters and is now focused on providing whatever sells best.

Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter is too unpolished to justify the costly hardware required to run it properly.

It’s the sort of game that even the most ardent tactical shooter fans are going to find frustrating.

Angus M. gave it a1:
Great graphics, but utter and totally ruined by the save game system. Any program that will not let you save when you want to is broken.
Oleg T. gave it a6:
Challenging. But the bigger part of the challenege comes from the gruesome checkpoint system and imbecile AI. If it were not for the graphics, I'd give it less than 5 really.
Sam F. gave it a9:
a Great game if you have the rig to run it. The recommended specs are 256mb video card, but on high detail you will get poor frame rates with it. For this game to run good you should have a 3 ghz cpu with 1 gig of ram and 512 mb on your video card. A very hard and immersive shooter which really shines. The graphics and massive areas are amazing which adds to the realism of this game. If you have a good enough rig, run don't walk to buy this game.
YEGOR M. gave it a9:
GRAW campaign (played at Hard): GRAW is the first REALLY worth tactical FPS as for me (oh, there were "Chrome" for years ago - but for different reasons). Thanx to it's breathetaking, almost realistic combat simulation, this game truely becomes an "Elite" - "not-for-all" gaming masterpiece. (If you prefer to play like Invulnerable Robocop - you are off) I agree - there are some serious weak points: The saving system (but this will definitely teach you to be careful and raise the cost of your "life" - like the "real" war - the mistakes are very "expensive") Useless "friends" (I've always tried to save them at the spawnpoint and used simple "move" commands. Also, I've turned off the enemy rhombus marks - this feature somewhat like cheating for me (i want simulator - not the "conquistador vs indians" story... The bottomline: I would say, that it is not "you testing this game" - this time the "game testing you" as a "smart player" and professional or "disciplined" gamer (Your "system" have to meet this game's "requirements"). And I really enjoyed the test - "it's been emotional" and absorbing... As for Multi-player: I was dreamed about sinking into GRAW multi-player fields... I thought: "Finally I've found an alternative for CS:S (which is become "a new Quake styled action" - running-jumping-shooting!..." Anticipated, I've downloaded and installed official patch (it was mp_map_pack_1.6)---> BUT, for some reasons, the game is not running with this patch installed (I live in Russia_Moscow, and using official copy of GRAW) is starting to have trubles with launching (giving the error message - "some kind of "ticket exception or smth. like that- so I've gived up - have no time to involve myself into long period of finding something that possibly doesnot exists" So GRAW-Multi is far away now from me.
Patrick D. gave it a4:
Great graphics and sound marred by abysmal friendly AI and unforgiving enemy AI... not enough save points combined with these issues lead to an extremely frustrating game.
James C. gave it a10:
they amped the AI up a hell of alot since the 360 version (thank god), the realism is striking so if your not a realism buff then this isn't for you. but this is the best squad based shooter on the pc in years easily.
Rich C. gave it a6:
I'm tired of single player games that try to be multiplayer. I don't like to have to control a squad or teammates to be successful. I really thought it may be like the Ghost Recon's of yesteryear, but I was wrong. Ghraphics are awesome, but there's more to a game that what you look at.
