Summary

Get ready for unlimited skating and BMX biking in the vast wasteland of skate culture - Los Angeles. No levels. No load times. Just never-ending action that doesn't stop until you leave the game! Tony Hawk's American Wasteland gives you - for the first time ever in a Hawk game - the freedom to skate, or bike, throughout a rich, expansive open environment. Once you arrive in Los Angeles, the vast city that gave birth to skate culture, the sky's the limit as you progress through the Wasteland story and choose missions that will have you immersed in the action without ever skating the same line twice! PC gamers will be able to compete against one another in multiplayer action via GameSpy. Freedom to ride forever: no level-based gameplay. In American Wasteland, you travel throughout the vast urban terrain of Los Angeles including Hollywood, East L.A., and other landmark areas without restrictions or repetition. Ultimate player control: more tricks and expanded controls than ever before. Choose board or bike: For the first time, you can choose to ride BMX bikes throughout the entire game, with all-new physics, a BMX specific control system and several BMX-specific goals. Customize like crazy: Enter and explore dozens of shops in game to customize your gear and your look. [Aspyr Media]

Play.tm

If the PC is your gaming platform of choice and you've been itching for a bit of skateboarding action, then American Wasteland isn't a bad choice at all, (until the next inevitable Tony Hawk's game, of course).

PC Gamer UK

Fine skating action and fearsomely addictive to boot. [Apr 2006, p.79]

70

Computer Games Magazine

Over the course of seven games and three acronoyms, the Tony Hawk series has inexorably morphed into the Hot Topic of the videogame universe, a game that glitzily packages and commodifies the skater subculture it glorifies. [May 2006, p.54]

70

Boomtown

There's nothing significant to recommend this over the previous ones if you already own one. If you don't then this is a good introduction to the series.

GameSpot

While the gameplay in THAW is still sharp, this installment just seems to lack that special spark that made the series so much fun in the first place.

PC Gamer

It's impossible to dislike the game, especially if you enjoyed its predecessors, but it's also hard to appreciate such formulaic gameplay. [May 2006, p.98]

Jolt Online Gaming UK

THAW is a step backwards, with its uninspiring Story mode being mostly to blame. The PC version suffers even more thanks to it being the recipient of such a sloppy conversion.

Worth Playing

The traditional Tony Hawk gameplay has several twists - some for the better, others not so much - but has had the difficulty significantly dumbed down to the point where Story Mode is boring much of the time, and is insufficiently counterbalanced by Classic Mode.

Essentially just "THUG 2" with corridors, and Elephant Man-ugly, too. [Apr 2006, p.89]

Emma B. gave it a6:
Fun game, but it seriously needs the option of playing a female character in storymode. Just not the same with the wrong gender.

Martin M. gave it a10:
Dispite those fools at Aspyr media I'm really looking forward to buying the game cuz it's gonna be tha best ever.

Koen B. gave it a10:
