Summary
Based on the 2007 live-action feature film, Transformers: The Game lets gamers control the outcome in the battle for Earth as they choose to protect it as Autobots or destroy it as Decepticons. Players experience the unstoppable power and massive scale of their favorite Robots in Disguise such as BumbleBee, Barricade and others. As the Transformers robot's war comes to Earth, gamers make the choice to join the Autobots in protecting our planet or to join the Decepticons in destroying it. With dual campaigns, the fate of the world is in players' hands. Instantly change from a larger than life robot to a high-powered vehicle such as a sports car, fighter jet or helicopter. Players crush, topple and wreck every object, including buildings and vehicles, in their path or use the objects as weapons. An unprecedented line-up lets gamers experience the massive scale, unique abilities and sheer strength of an army of characters from the Transformers universe when they choose to play as Optimus Prime, Megatron, Ironhide, Starscream, BumbleBee and more. For head-to-head battles, fans engage in melee combat that reflects each Transformers robot's character, scale, weight and power along with melee weapons and special moves unique to each character. The game's ranged combat offers a wide array of projective weapons designed to take out enemies from afar. [Activision]

Transformers doesn't make any radical changes to the classic action game genre, but it does have likeable characters and top-notch production values, coupled with enjoyable gameplay.

While the gameplay is somewhat shallow, and the racing elements sometimes frustrating, there is plenty to say about getting a Transformers game with high production value and an all-star voice team. Activision and Traveller’s Tales have brought the new movie to life with a decent beat-em-up title that doesn’t succumb to the movie tie-in curse.

I just hope in the next game they amp up the free roam capabilities and truly allow us to dive into the world of the robots from Cybertron.

Unfortunately, the control system ruins much of the game experience, and even though a patch could probably fix this major issue, the producers have yet to release one.

No difficulty settings, or multiplayer make completing this game a done deal. I cannot see that this title would have any replayability once you have completed the game after playing both sides.

It’s about on par with all other movie licensed games: relatively short, decent graphics, decent gameplay, and not much value to it.

Not that much more than meets the eye. [Oct 2007, p.78]
PC Gamer
Sane people. however--folks who don't take their new Leader Class Optimus Prime to bed with them--should probably play something else. [Oct 2007, p.72]
Games Radar (in-house)
There was limitless potential here, but it's wasted. Transformers: The Game should be a sleek, cutting-edge sports car; instead, it's an old beater whose driver's seat has a spring sticking out in exactly the wrong place.

A textbook - not to mention chastening - exercise in making something inherently fun no fun whatsoever. [Sept 2007, p.60]
PC Gamer UK
Promising ideas completely wasted. [Oct 2007, p.78]
VideoGamer
As far as summer movie licensed video games go, Transformers is sadly one of the worst we've seen this year. While the movie stands, the video game most definitely falls.

I don't know my name gave it a1:
The only bit of the game that really holds up or is worth the money is the bit where you change from robot to car/aircraft/ect and back. Other than that, it's not worth the money, except maybe for diehard fans.
Geoky I. gave it a1:
Lame! Money thrown of the window! Stupid AI, crapy gameplay, BOORING
Ng B. gave it a7:
Well... to be honest, the graphics were just mediocre and they do look a little blurred even without the effects on. The sounds are still nice to listen to and the concept is great, being able to transform at will, destructable worlds and all. I find if kind of weird that you need to throw objects on certain enemies in order to defeat them. Also, your guns will be practically useless most of the time. Transformer fans would sure get a whole lot of fun out of this action packed game, that is if they have the endurance to complete the entire game even though it is deemed as relatively short. Oh yea, the CG movies were awefully detailed too. Well, the most problematic thing is probably the driving mechanism. You seem to be driving on ice, so whole a lot of missions in which you need to chase, persuit, escape, reach in time, will prove to be a chore to complete. Perhaps a 6.5 would be more appropriate. I expected more from this game seeing the fairly high scores it got from above. The movie was ingenius though.
Jonas M. gave it a3:
Cool concept, poorly done... The animations really do suck, and so does the sounds. But the graffix are ok.. I give it a 3, just because i love Transformers.
Jon K. gave it a4:
I don't know what game the reviewers were playing, or how, after correctly identifying the gameplay as "somewhat shallow" (a huge understatement), they can go on to give it 84. 84!! This game just isn't fun. You walk around shooting with 2 buttons. That's it. The sound effects? Tinny and terrible. The graphics? passable, as long as you don't look too closely. Each board consists of killing X number of guys to proceed or getting someplace within a certain amount of time. Boring and frustrating. Don't pay for this one.
Tran Sformersthegame gave it a10:
This game has everything an action gamer could ask for. Fast cars, big explosions, and exaggerated physics. In how many games can you say that you can throw a bus at a giant robot? Visually it's presentable and the game play is somewhat repetitive but is fairly entertaining.
Citizen D. gave it a2:
While a game where you are two storey high Transformers rampaging around town sounds great, the developers of this game suck out all the fun with tedious and ridiculous "chapters", awful controls, and a general lack of any refinement in a rush to get this out the door for the movie release. A very good example of how bad the industry has gotten when you look at the money that went into this game, versus what came out the other end. The graphics are nice for sure, but that doesn't count for much when you are turning the game off in disgust.
