Summary

Viva Piñata is a wacky, zany, and anything-can-happen comedy series that answers the question, for the first time ever, “Where do Piñatas come from?” In a lush environment on Piñata Island, a multitude of happy, colorful Piñatas live the sweet life, frolicking, dancing and filling themselves up with the most delicious goodies a child could ever want! Then they eagerly await the glorious day when they are ‘chosen’ by the Piñata Factory to attend birthday parties, and special celebrations all over the world, bringing joy, treats and tons o’ fun to kids of all ages. It’s no wonder that wherever the Piñatas go, they’re the life of the party. Viva Piñata is a window to fantastical world full of wild-roaming Piñata. Players choose from hundreds of elements to customize heir world in order to attract piñatas, foster good relationships among the 60+ piñata, and navigate the conflicts and dangers that threaten to break them open. NZGamer

The game is so charming that the gameplay doesn’t feel particularly repetitive. The visual style is gorgeous, the ‘romance dance’ for each type of piñata is clever and imaginative, and there’s some great music here too, in a range of styles that won’t have you reaching for the mute button any time soon.

A tight, gorgeous-looking game. [Feb 2008, p.86]

Gaming Nexus

Viva Pinata is a very deep and rich game. This review has touched on only small parts of the overall experience.

Cheat Code Central

The complexity of micromanaging the land, meeting the needs social and mating needs of piñatas, and gaining experience for future upgrades may be too much for some kids to keep up with. Older gamers, on the other hand, will find the game greatly surpasses standard kid fare.

PC Gamer UK

One of the better sandbox games in existence. [Jan 2008, p.70]

IGN

It’s a creative experience that requires plenty of problem solving in a pretty unique and gentle setting. Yes, animals do eat each other (well, they break each other and eat the candy inside) and mate, but overall, it’s one of the highest quality family friendly titles out on the market.

Don't let its sweet face fool you. This gardening game's no little weed, even if it's not the prettiest flower around. [Feb 2008, p.108]

VideoGamer

The overriding feeling you'll get from Viva Piñata is one of depth.

GameZone

Viva Pinata is not perfect, as there are some control problems that get annoying and stability problems, but worth a look from PC gamers looking to get a hold of something a little different.

Easy gameplay and cute piñatas equals some fun family entertainment. While the port is a bit shoddy, Viva Piñata for PC is an excellent game for all ages.

Eurogamer

More elegance in the interface, fewer lulls in activity and a better way of gently directing you towards its hidden delights would have carried the score higher, but even with its flaws Viva Piñata is a game that deserves to be played and refreshes your belief that games can be friendly as well as fun.

If only Microsoft could have exercised a bit more of the gardener's patience and attention to detail, Viva Pinata could have been a bumper crop of gaming goodness.

While the Windows for Live process has been poorly implemented across the board for these new Microsoft PC titles, the addictive nature of Viva Piñata will delight people of all ages and keep you pecking away at the keyboard to mate your newly acquired species of Piñata.

Equally as good on PC as it is on the Xbox 360. You’ll have trouble tearing the kids away from it, let alone yourself.

GameSpot

The PC version of Viva Piñata is every bit as enjoyable as the Xbox 360 original, assuming your system is one that it chooses to run on.

The repetition of tasks and subjectivity of the objectives noticed on the console version is unfortunately retained here.

Worth Playing

It might not be as grandiose a job other things that sim fans may have had experience with, but it's a unique change of pace that they may want to try out.

Crashes booted me to the desktop a dozen times. And a save corruption resulted in the loss of a level-17 garden and my last shred of patience. [Feb 2008, p.83]

GekooktEi gave it a4:
This is kind of a failed LocoRoco/Patapon/LittleBigPlanet, which all have FUN childish gameplay, but this game just sucks if you ask me. the only funny thing is the idea...

Bob Bob gave it a10:
This game was the greatest game I've ever played I mean being a pinyata and going around and being beast.
