Summary
You Are Empty offers players an alternative approach to the history of the late fifties of the XX century. Scene of action is the Soviet Union. Leading Soviet scientists start a big experiment that alter human physiology and mentality in order to create super humans capable of building bright future and communism all over the world. But something goes wrong... As a result the whole city, where that experiment took place, goes on a rampage. The majority of citizens died, and those who survived turned into hideous mutants - the only inhabitants of deserted streets. You Are Empty immerses you in an exaggerated dark and obscure atmosphere of Soviet totalitarianism. Fighting against mutants, that obtained super power after the experiment was carried out, the main hero tries to gain an understanding of what's happening around and save the day. [1C Company]

Gaming Nexus
That feeling of mild disappointment is a good way to sum up You Are Empty. It feels a little behind the times and doesn’t fully deliver in every respect, but it’s still fun from start to finish.

Any fan of the genre has already been here and done this before — probably 2-3 years ago. While the visual and aural facets of YAE are generally solid, its gameplay is not all that entertaining, and there are plenty of other titles in the genre that can offer a more entertaining and diversified gaming experience.

Man, what a stinker. [Nov 2007, p.114]
Game Chronicles
It's hard for me to completely hate You Are Empty, but then again I'm a sucker for those really bad horror movies the Sci Fi Channel churns out on a weekly basis.

The glass isn't 'half empty,' it isn't even 'not full.' It's a soundless, hateful asphyxiating void. [Oct 2007, p.74]

You Are Empty fails to really bring anything new to the table, but it does bring a unique setting and a creepy atmosphere. Where it falls flat, however, is the most important part of any game: its gameplay and its ability to be replayed.

Unfortunately, the graphics just aren't up to snuff, the character models, aside from being horrendous, repeat often and your character moves with all the zip of a drugged elephant.

The stylish storytelling and the possibilities posed by the setting can't hide the embarrassing localization, the unexciting fetch-the-key gameplay that most every other FPS has moved beyond, and issues with the graphics that might have you reaching for the nearest bottle of pain relievers and asking what happened to quality testing.

Why am I empty, then? Perhaps because this crass, banal, unchallenging belch of a first person shooter has left me that way, groaning and giggling like a mental patient. [Nov 2007, p.72]

Be warned...You Are Empty isn't so much a title as a disclaimer. [Mar 2008, p.74]
GameSpy
Bereft of any sort of challenging AI and sporting a handful of weapons that all seem to have been dredged from some imaginary WWII shooter from the eighties, this game is the kind of thing you can expect to get for Christmas from a grandma that knows nothing about video games and relies on a shifty game store employee looking to move the non-sellers.

More intelligent enemies would have been great, or at least greater numbers of stupid foes. Digital Spray instead decided to throw small numbers of morons at you, give you an infuriatingly inadequate run speed, and make available one of the most boring arsenals in recent memory. It's an absolute must-bypass.

Soviet gulags were probably more punishing than You Are Empty, but we're not taking any bets.

Reviewed Man gave it a0:
Con: Awful quality, gamplay, repetitieve, doesn't scare, not worth the money, poor plot, glitches, buggy, busted, broken, and downright awful Pro: No one is making u by the game.
Mako I. gave it an8:
You are Empty is a generic first person shooter. You shoot bad guys, clear a room, and repeat, until you have found the exit. But this game is still pretty fun. The weapons are all pretty neat, like the nail gun, electric shock cannon, and that submachine gus with a drum mag. The enemies are pretty diverse and interesting, like this half human half helicoptor guy who flys into the air and tries to spot weld you. Also there is leaning, if that helps. Just don't expect half-life2.
Warmonger gave it a6:
I can understand all the negative reviews but you know what? I've seen worse! This game actually has a creepy atmosphere and music that sort of sucks you in (love the cinematics)... no the graphics are not spectacular and the game does have it's flaws but in all fairness.....it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be!
Alex M. gave it a1:
One of the worst games I have ever played. All enemies are stupid, lame, and all look the same. NO real plot, graphics are horrible (except for the cinematics) AVOID at all costs!
Valyo gave it a1:
It's a waste of time.
The Decider gave it a3:
I don't know what Mariusz is on about, but this game is horrendous, regardless of setting and timeframe.
