Summary
The official soccer game of the 2002 Korea/Japan World Cup features new "Air Play" gameplay with intuitive one-button headers, volleys, scissor kicks, juggling and showboating. New player-to-player animations allow for agressive jostling for the ball on the ground and in the air. The Tournament Mode features a seven game series beginning with round-robin play, followed by playoffs leading to the final match with a progressive story line and a rising intensity as you advance. From the opening sweeps to the penalty kicks, this game engages and entertains. For the PlayStation 2 there is no better soccer title to own.

It's fun, it's exciting, and it's challenging -whether played against the artificial intelligence or your big sister.

Despite not going anywhere near as deep as its MLS brother, FIFA World Cup 2002 is simply a joy to play.

Easy controls. Great sound. Outstanding graphics. Original commentary. Challenging gameplay.

Frankly, I'd save the extra 20 bucks and pick up FIFA 2002 on the cheap.

Rewarding an experience as it may be, the precedence set by MLS 2002 was so high, that a list [of modes] as barren as this one seems almost insulting.

The game looks so freaking pretty, it blows away past version. [July 2002, p.99]

If youre after the best PS2 football game on the market then youll have to look elsewhere. If however, youre simply hankering for a game that will mimic the forthcoming World Cup then this is worth investigating.

While 2002 World Cup offers stadiums and an interface that are specific to the event, the game lacks many of the features found in FIFA 2002, making it difficult to recommend to anyone but World Cup fanatics.

By focusing on the Michael Owens, EA've forgotten the Gary Nevilles - capturing the magic, but fluffing the basics. [PSM2]

A minor disappointment, but easily one of the better soccer game experiences I've had.

This game is lacking most of the extraordinary depth that gave the first "FIFA 2002" so much replayability. [July 2002, p.40]
GamePro
Without any new gameplay developments beyond the Cup (which, in all fairness, shouldve been in FIFA 2002 in the first place), theres little justification for its full-price $50 tagits more like a $25 add-on pack.

Certain key footballers like Beckham, Owen, Carlos or Figo have been designated as star players, granting them extra abilities like speed, strike power, free kick magic or skill on the ball. This prevents most of the matches ending too predictably.

Im sorry to say but FIFA World Cup 2002 is game to catch consumers when they get cup fever rather a game to provide the ultimate World Cup experience.

In terms of the gameplay the changes are minimal and comparing this game to "Pro Evolution Soccer" is a joke, Konami's title is just a different class.

It's too bad World Cup's gameplay is so slow an ddeliberate, because I like other parts of it. [July 2002, p.115]

Jimmy M. gave it a2:
EA games are usually great, and I've really enjoyed previous versions of FIFA, but FIFA 02 Major League Soccer is probably the worst game I've ever tried to play on my PC. The game engine is lame, the AI is about the most predictable thing I've ever played against, and the game seems to choose where to pass the ball regardless of what direction I attempt to send it in. I'm waiting for a few years to buy another version, because I really can't stand this one.
Tyson B. gave it a 7:
Fifa soccer 2002 is a solid game but Fifa soccer 2001 still is a little better.
Bazz Z. gave it a 0:
Pro Evo is the king and this miserable game is its slave!
Ziggy Stardust gave it a 4:
On it's own it's not terrible, but considering it's basically fifa 2002 except with a bunch less gameplay modes, and options world cup is a huge rip off. while i like the direction the fifa series is going on the whole (more realism... less magnetic ball to foot physics). again it's just fifa 2002 at more than double the price with less features.
David H. gave it an 8:
Great game, and the World Class level is much more challenging than in prior FIFA games. Many players actually look like the real ones. The graphics are great, but the game sort of moves kind of slow at times when the ball is in the air. A must buy if you don't own FIFA 2002 already.
Kristofer H. gave it a 10:
This game is the bomb.
Joe J. gave it a 9:
What are these people talking about! This game rocks, as have most of them except 2001.
