For 2D fighting bliss, look no further than Capcom Fighting Evolution. [Dec 2004, p.64]
Armchair Empire
With this, players get a nice crossover fighter between a good number of Capcom franchises, very responsive control, and a deliciously nostalgic, old school game experience. That’s certainly quite nice for the price.

Jam just feels remarkably like the quickly cobbled together game it so obviously is, leaving it in the awkward position of being less balanced than "Alpha 2" or "Street Fighter III," less joyful than "Marvel Vs Capcom 2" and far uglier than "Guilty Gear."

This one's for the hardcore players, kiddies. It's a perfect multiplayer game (especially if you have a hardcore fighting stick or two), but the casual fighting game fan sure isn't going to be entertained for long.

Too routine to stand out from the crowd--especially for Capcom fighting vets. After a few rounds, you should be more than satisfied.

We can only hope the inevitable sequel offers more fighters and modes. [Holiday 2004, p.82]

For those looking for a true evolution of the fighting genre like the title implies, however, you're in for a severe disappointment; there's just not much to it that you haven't seen or experienced before.

A good fighter for those that really enjoyed the early Street Fighters, but it doesn’t live up to the standards Capcom has set for itself with more recent titles.

A dated 2D beat 'em up for purists only. [Feb. 05]

Evolution's problem is that each of the characters is distinct, but there aren't nearly enough of them for the game to stand on that concept alone.

The game is clearly best suited for hardcore fans of Capcom's fighting games, who might enjoy exploring some of the nuances here, but probably won't find much reason to keep coming back.

This could've been a fantastic crossover title that really highlighted some of the company's greatest games, but instead is a competent game that features solid fighting and little else.

While there is nothing profoundly wrong with the game, it doesn’t put a unique twist on the game, it doesn’t have a large or comprehensive cast of characters, and it doesn’t look nearly as good as the competition.

Honestly, I think you’d have to be a super fan of the 2D fighting games to really think this game was great.

This isn’t a bad game, but just the same, the audience is certain to be limited to gamers who are still fans of the Capcom legacy.

For a game with the word "evolution" in its name, it's interesting that this title is so lackluster that it pushes the boundaries of ironic humor. [Dec 2004, p.175]

The wasted potential here is like a swift kick to the face. Still, it's worth a play if you live by the gospel of QCF + P.

Certainly isn't the worst 2D fighting game ever made, but when you take into account the lack of effort on Capcom's part, the number of fan-favorite fighters that didn't make it onto the roster, and the complete lack of any sort of character building or online play features, it's tough to recommend this game to anybody.

The most unique thing about it is the chance to create match-ups between games with such different themes. Otherwise, most of these characters are available in other forms and in games you probably already have.

A game that shouldn't have been made. It's a hardcore product with next to nothing new to offer to the hardcore. Meanwhile, more casual people will be turned off by the confusing learning curve and the utterly awful aesthetics.

If it had flashier graphics or a simpler, more intuitive fighting system, it might appeal to everyone. As it stands, it's a curio and only of interest to completists and Street Fighter obsessives after a bargain exhibit to stroke in private. [PSW]

The menus are cheap looking, the tunes tinny and the endings don't reward you in the way they should, being short and small. The whole thing has the feel of a title scrambled together at the whim of a marketing director keen to make a fast buck on the back of a wave of retro popularity.

Many of the characters that are included in this game are awkward to control or just plain boring. The gameplay itslef is fairly bare bones. [Holiday 2004, p.115]

It’s almost as though Jam can’t decide what kind of fighting game it wants to be, thanks to a dramatic clash of styles in terms of both combat and visuals. [March 2005, p.118]
Gamezilla!
It feels incredibly rushed. From the recycled visuals to the middling audio, I couldn’t help but shake the feeling that Capcom Fighting Evolution was shoved out too soon.

Capcom should be ashamed to put Ryu and other Street Fighter characters in there; as for the other two titles, what have they got on Street Fighter? Not even die hard fans would enjoy this title.

As bad as the roster is, the game itself is fine, and by fine I mean you couldn't have possibly made it more boring. [Jan 2005, p.109]
GMR Magazine
While this may at first seem like a great way to pit all of Capcom's best fighters against each other, in reality it makes for an unbalanced mess. [Jan 2005, p.102]
Game Revolution
There is no reason to buy or play this game. It’s a thin, worthless piece of spam on a hook that will hopefully be gobbled up by the countless better games available this holiday season. Even if you get nothing for Christmas, be thankful you didn’t get this.

Jimmi A gave it an8:
It´s a very good 2D fighting. But the can have some more worked arounde the Graphic. But the control (who it´sthe most important part) is excellent.
[Anonymous] gave it a7:
The quotes from Armchair Empire and Gamer Feed are spot on. If I weren't such a fan of the genre and company I would have rated it a 6.
Shido Xen gave it a 1:
This game blows! I was very disappointed with it. There is a lack of characters, no online mode, and NO KEN!!!!! #$%^&*
Jerrad H. gave it a 5:
Its a fun, if not mercilessly rehashed game with no real innovation, particularly in its graphics. There's only one new sprite in the whole game, and almost all the rest of the sprites are anywhere from 6 to 10 years old. That's unacceptable in a world where GGX is almost 4 years old, and SNK remains low-res but has for more detailed, well animated, and best of all, often new or modified sprites. Granted most people don't play these games for graphics, but geez, its seriously time for Capcom to evolve.
