This time we're treated to 2D characters on top of 3D backgrounds - major improvement. [Dec 2001, p.160]

You’ll know by now not to expect any radical changes, but a better game through slow refinement and evolution, and for this reason only purists will want this title if they own the original.

Hardly a groundbreaking fighting game, but it delivers a massive lineup of classic characters coupled with a tried-and-true fighting engine. It’s rock-solid fighting, plain and simple.

It seems that Capcom does listen to its followers, because CVS2 is light year ahead of its predecessor, in game play, options, and presentation.

Like a large pot of soup. The soup makes a great dinner for the first few days, but by the end of the week, it isn't quite as appetizing as it was before.

Its depth is certainly daunting... it's only appealing in the long term for those who are willing to devote some time to learning its intricacies.

IGN
A very fine 2D fighter...The only disadvantage to its arrival on PS2 is the inevitable difficulty caused by the PS2 controller, and with luck that will be remedied by a decent fighting solution soon.

It’s like every aspect of 2D fighting history converging on a single screen, and it’s almost mind-boggling. [Dec 2001, p.236]

A great modern anthology of 2D fighters. If you go gaga over every new Capcom or SNK fighter released, you’ll absolutely love this game.

The largest problem with this game seems to be the difficulty. The end-game bosses are seriously some of the hardest I’ve ever seen in a fighting game.

A wonderful showcase for those forgotten SNK fighters, but it’s also geared for highly knowledgeable players who know the difference between a cross-up and a deep cross.

Given the graphics power of the PS2, the thing I found myself wanting the most were high quality character animations. CvS2 often looks just like the same old sprite fighters we’ve seen over the last few years.

Those who haven't played a fighting game in a long time might also be impressed, but the weak visuals will be a major turnoff for the average gamer.

Thiago I. gave it a9:
I really liked, it coud be better in my opinion, but stil being a great game.

Ryan M. gave it a6:
if your not into 2d fighting games, this one won't get you into them. Every character is practically the same, but there is about 44 of them. Capcom and SNK bring out a good fight, but it won't last long until your putting your controller down and moving on.

Ziggy Stardust gave it an 8:
It's a bit of a Capcom cash grab, but still... fans of Street Fighter and all the SNK 2D fighters will certainly find a lot to like about it.

Mustang Matt gave it a 1:
Where the hell are the cheat codes and how the hell can u pull of special moves?

Kakarot S. gave it a 10:
Just perfect. Well almost, you can't play it online :)

Kenny K. gave it a 10:
Good...good.

[Anonymous] gave it a 9:
I really liked the game, but I would have liked it more if both companies were equally balanced. What I mean is Capcom gets more glory then SNK and Capcom is heard more often then SNK, don't get me wrong, I know that Capcom made this game, but SNK allowed their charecters to be molded in the way of Capcom's choosing, SNK at least needs the same amount of attention as Capcom. Maybe SNK may not be as popular as the Capcom games, but what about the hard core SNK players [like me] who like King of Fighters better then Street Fighter? I will get off that subject and move on to the next one: Stages, simply put, there aren't enough stages in this game, I mean how many stages are there, 10? Considering that there are over 44 charecters, 10 stages doesn't go well with so huge a lineup. One point I will compliment is the Color Edit mode where you can change absolutely everything about any charecter and make him or her any color you want, the downside: it's too difficult and sometimes that makes you change something about someone you don't want changed. Also about special moves, I think since Capcom made the game they could have made some of the charecters moves more like the Capcom fighter's moves like Terry's down back down forward punch for Power Geyser could be changed to down forward down forward punch so it can be more in synch with the street fighter's move lists. Although I am glad they gave Terry a new finisher move called Buster Wolf it is cooler then his old finisher from King of Fighters 99 move done the same way. Also, where is Andy Bogard? Is he unlockable? I have only played it once and if Terry and Joe are in this game, where is Andy?
