Summary

Savage by Nature. Two allies torn apart by tragedy...yet bound by fate. The three sacred glyphs...the mythic and forbidden symbols of an ancient world torn apart. Only these mystic relics have the power to open the Gateway of Chaos and lead the people to the Red Moon. Legend says that when the three glyphs meet, the three worlds will once again be reunited. Two men, once friends, now have their fates tied together by the tragic death of a young maiden. One, a brave young knight and summoner of the Chaos Legion. The other, a noble lord who has fallen to the dark side. Both hold thekey to the sacred glyphs in their power. The legions shall be summoned in this dark gothic opera! [Capcom]

Solid in virtually every way, it’ll more than tide you over till Devil May Cry 3 comes along.

Game Informer

The nonstop action Chaos legion exhibits is unparalleled. [June 2003, p.101]

83

GameNow

Apart from the minute-to-minute madness, Chaos Legion rocks a pretty cool amount of depth. [July 2003, p.56]

80

GMR Magazine

Brings not only addictive, up-tempo hack-n-slash action, but also a great new A.I. system that raises the bar on computer-assisted beat 'em ups. [July 2003, p.78]

80

Deeko

Those who manage to get through the first few levels without being bored will find that the game becomes very interesting, though the storyline remains somewhat odd and convoluted.

This game's strength lies in its heavily nuanced gameplay, integrated story, and its gloomy heretical aura. [June 2003, p.64]

Maxim Online

As hero Sieg Wahrheit, enjoy third-person action with strategizing and upgrading, RPG-style, plus plenty of splattery hack ’n’ slash fun.

Thunderbolt

Chaos Legion is one of the great unsung brawlers of the PS2. So the story is cliched beyond belief. So the characters are forgettable. Maybe its presentation could have been executed better. Big deal. The game is overflowing with some of the toughest brawling action you’ll ever face.

Electronic Gaming Monthly

First, it provides an engaging story (told through beautiful cut-scenes that kept me on my toes till the very end. Second...building up each legion's stats keeps the action from feeling monotonous. [July 2003, p.112]

TotalGames.net

Underneath the gloss and overblown script, behind the limited tactical use of the Legions, Chaos Legion is an old-fashioned hack ‘n’ slash adventure. Just like "Devil May Cry 2," the next-gen visual wizardry and slick character design hide a game that isn’t quite as original as it thinks it is.

Adrenaline Vault

Has all the style of "Devil May Cry," but like the second installment in that series, some poor gameplay mechanics keep the title from achieving all that it could.

PSM Magazine

It has some great strategy elements and intense action, but is marred by repetitive level design and slow pacing. [July 2003, p.34]

Eurogamer

Despite Capcom's protestations of Chaos Legion being some 'intense gothic opera' fusion of action, RPG and strategy, it's still an essentially simple game at its heart, and might not be as involving as many would like.

Official U.S. Playstation Magazine

Although it's a beautiful game full of nonstop, relentless action, Chaos' flaws turn a potentially stellar title into merely a solid one for genre fans. [July 2003, p.96]

netjak

An above average action game for the PS2 that has some great character designs and a world that needs more fleshing out. Still with all it's small faults it's still a game I keep coming back to just to witness another beatdown, and if a game can do that it's not so bad in my book.

Although its replay value leaves a bit to be desired, Chaos Legion is still a decent brawler with some clever combat and stylish visuals.

Games Radar UK (Pre-2006)

A standard slash-'em-up that is all too nasty, brutish and short to measure up to Capcom's usual quality. It's fairly entertaining but all too brief. [Playstation 2 Max]

While the game promises something interesting, Chaos Legion levels off mid-way through and never elevates over redundant button masher status.

Stark mastery of skills has its place, but it's a true shame that the developers couldn't shape Chaos Legion into a more compelling experience.

Chaos Legion is like a train on a circular track: it goes round and round, never veering from the path. I'll leave it up to you to decide whether or not that's a good thing.

Playboy

You slash through swarms of monsters, getting an assist from seven specialized ghostly legions that you summon just as the frantic button-mashing grows tiresome. [Aug 2003, p.32]

Edge Magazine

Chaos Legion isn't as sharp as it should be. Beautiful, polished and at times engaging Capaom's latest invention, nevertheless, tests neither the reactions nor the brain enough to hold your interest. [May 2003, p.93]

PSX Nation

"Devil May Cry Lite" would have been a more appropriate name for this somewhat-successful attempt by Capcom’s Studio 6 to add mild RPG trappings to a genre known for button-masher frenzies.

It’s too easy. You'll be able to breeze through the game's 13 levels and only encounter about three tough bosses, which comes out to roughly $17 a challenge.

Into Liquid Sky

Let's not kid ourselves - where Chaos Legion fails in becoming a top tier title like "Devil May Cry" is that it's extremely repetitive. Seig doesn't have a lot of moves, so expect to do the same combat actions over and over again.

GameSpy

Repetitive, ugly, short, nonsensical, and boring -- a beat-'em-up that gets almost everything wrong, and that's wildly overpriced at $50.

GameSpot

Only about five hours long, which is probably for the best, since the storyline is so nonsensical and the action is so repetitive that you'll quickly be begging for the game to end.

You may want to make the comparison to "Devil May Cry" but Chaos Legion is not in the same league. Think of it as a poor man's version.

50

All Game Guide

Starts out promising and gradually becomes more tedious the further you delve into it. It’s repetitive, and it’s repetitive not because of the sheer number of enemies thrown at you or the simplistic nature of objectives, but because of the paltry set of moves you can initiate with the main character.

Game Revolution

The idea of kicking ass as a gothic swordsman and his seven closest unholy friends sounds mighty appealing. However, a crummy targeting system and ultra-repetitive gameplay relegate Chaos Legion to the status of a good idea gone bad.

What Our Users Said

The average user rating for this game is 8.5 (out of 10) based on 42 User Votes

Note: User votes are NOT included in the Metascore calculation.

Mike S. gave it a2:
Can you say 'vote padding' much? The graphics were dull and lifeless back when they game shipped, the controls were overly simple, the first 5 or 6 stages are mostly indistinguishable from one another, the enemy designs are neat, but are hampered by ugly textures, and the game overall lacks a feeling of freedom, as using the wrong legion during a fight will get you stomped. The people rating this game 10 are either blind, ignorant, or are very annoyed game devs who feel the need to make their game seem like an underdog. Less fun that Devil May Cry 2. Bottom line.

Karen O. gave it a10:
This is the most fun game that I have ever played,it is so fun that I continuously play it almost every day,Its the only game in my video game library that keeps me coming back for more and more.I literally fell in love with chaos legion the first day I played it,it,s a real addiction.I Realy Hope and pray that there will be a sequel one day. Finally Iwould like to thank everyone at capcom for creating Chaos Legion and making it possible because chaos legion is one of those very few unique, magnificent, and unforgetable games that only comes along once in a life time.

Akeem G. gave it a10:
Chaos Legion brings something different to the table that a lot of other free style RPG games have been missing and thats the ability to summon and command up to six allies to help destroy thousands of enemies in beutiful and long stages that doesn't have any kill joy puzzles to solve that makes even the most intense action seem so dull that you'll hesitate to play the game like any of the games from the Devil May Cry or the Onimusha series, that is why it's so much more addictive and better and less boring than them.

Jared M. gave it a10:
I got this game on August 15, 2005 and I barely played it b/c i had things to do but i was very anxious to play it. Even though I barely played it I played enough of it to know that it will be even cooler so all of those who think i am rating this game to soon oh well and for the two of the 20+ people who rated this game who said it sucked well screw you, you wouldn't know a great game if it came up and bit you in the butt. so back off

Naomi M. gave it a10:
Screw everyone who didn't like this game. It's beautifully done, has a good story and the Legions are cool and helpful. It was great! I love all Capcom games and this is no exception. Seig is awesome!

Scrabblerp gave it a 10:
I mostly liked the music in the game, especially the music at the 'press start' menu. I liked everything. I only wish there were more levels.

Colby N. gave it a 4:
Sorry, but this game sucked. I will give it some points for the legions, but those are the only points it gets... that and the main guys hair. I think it is a 3rd. rate Drakengerd, storyline sucked, and fights sucked, one sword, no up-grades for it, and who ever said the main guy even comes close to being as cool as Cloud (FF7) is a dumb-ass. the game dosent have much to offer but the same boring battles and singel button game play, though the movies were all right.
