With your eyes set on a girl living in a nearby pipe...you set out on your quest. Filled with a new determination, you've sworn to yourself that you'll do whatever it takes to kiss this charming little girl underneath the ancient tree and spend the rest of your life with her. To do this, you need to improve your reputation. Many in town are tired of their repetitive lives...they are always worried about something and have lost all of their hopes and dreams. While part of the fun is in exploration, I just found it very difficult to figure anything out. Add to that a translation that is at times pretty bad and, at points, incomplete (parts of text are just cut off and missing), and you have a game not worth a purchase.

Gameplay nags aside, we do want to make it clear that Chulip is certainly worth a look for purveyors of all things Japanese and indie. We can bandy about synonyms for "charming" and "stylish" all damn day, but the game makes an effort to resist labels, really becoming something in and of itself.

There's something to be said for Chulip's abject weirdness and purposefully awkward structure, but they don't translate into a rewarding game experience.

Fans of Japanese zaniness will have a swell time wandering the streets of Long Life Town trying to kiss everything in sight, but everyone else will be left frustrated and ultimately uninterested.

Despite frustrations and a tenancy towards the obtuse, Chulip manages to skate by on charm. The game is frequently funny and strange enough to keep players wondering what sort of nonsense the story will dish out next.

Overall, it's fun and somewhat novel, and there's quite a bit to discover, but there's not enough substance to keep most gamers occupied for long. [May 2007, p.85]
PSX Extreme
We couldn't possibly recommend a purchase, regardless of price, simply because it doesn't seem like there's enough here to constitute a whole game.

Besides these few little "WTF" gems of humor, Chulip as a whole is tedious and frustrating. You might enjoy a brief rush of adrenaline when you finally kiss someone, but it's only because getting there was so painful.

Fans of slow and quirky, non-violent storytelling may be intrigued. But this is as required as acquired tastes get. Proceed with caution.

This is a quirky Japanese kissing game. I say kiss it goodbye, because it’s not worth your time. Some games are just made broken. I don’t mean broken in the bug-riddled sense, but Chulip is probably one of the most poorly designed games I have ever played.
