Summary

The all-new Career Challenge is the steering wheel-gripping heart of Colin McRae Rally 2005 and has players hurtling through over 20 different classes of rally events including Challenges, Cups, SuperCups, Shields and Championships, earning the right to compete against the very best. Offering real progression and the most diverse selection of rally cars to choose from, drivers will be pummeled through a staggering 300+ stages driving cars from 4-wheel drive, 2-wheel drive, 4-wheel Classics, Super 2-wheel, Rear Wheel, Distinctive and 4x4 classics. Beyond the Career Challenge, there’s even more adrenaline-fuelled rally gaming with the title’s 4WD Championship, Rally, Stages and Online gaming modes. Also features the new bonnet-cam and an improved chase cam gives a real sensation of speed and undulation. Enhanced damage and scenery visuals include new individual damage models for every car and should you crash into a tree, it’ll shudder and even drop leaves. 30+ featured cars include the Volkswagen Golf MK5, Toyota Celica GT-FOUR, Lancia Stratos, Alfa Romeo 147 GTA, Alfetta GTV Turbodelta, Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII, Peugeot 206, 205 T16 Evo2 and the distinctive VW Beetle RSi. 9 international locations (new German rally joins events through UK, Sweden, USA, Finland, Australia, Spain, Greece, and Japan), in Rally game mode, each with 8 stages. Large, animated spectator crowds cheer you on through the stages. [Codemasters]

Though not particularly hard, the gameplay feels realistic, and the differing heights of certain sections of routes, as well as the surface and weather conditions, give the gamer plenty to think about.

Looks great, and the new career mode makes for massive fun. [Jan 2007, p.106]

The best true rally experience, with better braking, accelerating, and steering, perfect for serious players than any other game within the genre.

While this game does not have the same impact as 04 did in terms of wow factor and just oozing 'best rally game ever' comments, it does exactly what it set out to do and does it well.

Yes, Colin is king, but when your only real competition turns out to be your previous release, it affects the effort and growth of the series - this is not the next evolutionary step fans had been hanging for.

Rally fans will appreciate its adherence to rally ideals, gamers on the other hand may require a little shot of something extra.

That rock is the rocking arcade rally game "Rallisport Challenge 2," which offers better visuals, a more tangible driving sensation and arguably the best online support ever seen in a racing game. That hard place is "Richard Burns Rally," which has established itself as easily the most realistic (not to mention difficult) rally game. In the wake of these two triple-A titles, Colin McRae 2005 comes off feeling a little too tired to remain the pinnacle of rally gaming.

The fifth in the Colin McRae series is still a fine game if - and here's the major caveat - you didn't play last year's update. Those who did will get more fun out of playing spot the difference. [Nov 2004, p.107]

Tom L. gave it a10:
Simply brilliant. End of. The graphics are amazing especially for the PS2 and you only really appriciate them when you play another game and come back to this, looks like GT4, but with more detail and you smash everything up [If you so wish]. Of course there will come a time when you'll stop messing around crashing and play the game proper and it doesn't disappiont. With an extensive Career mode [Compulsory these days] alongside the normal Championship challenge and a vast range of cars to unlock and race in, Colin McRae Rally 2005 will certainly keep you playing for a while. The races are split with "Testing" mini-games where you can up-grade your rallying monster. The actual racing's not bad either with good physics and a challenging difficulty level thats great for beginners and the more experienced racers. The only glitch are the slightly fussy controls that take a while to get around ["Hard-Steer" is Triangle, too far out of reach to be useful and changing gear is L & R1 instead of L & R2]. All in all a great buy and one that doesn't disappoint, well worth the £40 for anyone with only the slightest hint of cars in their blood.
