We know that rallying isnt for all but Colin McRae 04 is the perfect package. Well for now at least. Its funny how we say that with each game but then with every incarnation Codemasters amazes us again.

The physics model's been overhauled, with movement possible from each of the axles - and the difference is striking. These cars really feel like a ton of metal being slid around mud and grit at ridiculous speeds; and they behave just like an out of control car really does. [PSM2]

Easily wins the title of best rally game ever - for now, at least! An amazing amount of detail has been put into every aspect of the game, and it really shows off in the long run.

It's the videogame equivalent of a Lamborghini showroom. And by that we mean the very top end of the market.

Another excellent outing for Codemasters' rally team, but one that has possibly taken the series to its structural - and commercial - limits. [Nov 2003, p.104]

Every engine rumble, surface and destructive event has its own unique sound, and with Dolby Pro-Logic enabled, the sound field is even more impressive. The handling has been tweaked and refined to an exceptional degree for this release; improving on what is otherwise a superlative model.

Despite some peripheral imperfection, this easily ranks as the best rally title currently on the market.

Handling and pop-up have been pretty much fixed, but in exchange we're greeted with a problematic multiplayer mode, some annoying graphical glitches and several other elements that perhaps wouldn't grate so much if Colin McRae 3 hadn't already tested the next-generation water. [Oct 2003, p.110]

Peter N. gave it a 4:
While I agree with other raters comments on the game physics, do you not notice a serious lag problem with the game? While playing, the game would noticeably slow down, and you felt as though you were in slow motion. This was noticed on different game discs on several PS2's. As for the graphics, they look great, but they seem more arcade-like than CMR3, almost a step backwards.
Mr X gave it a 10:
The best rally game ever. now im just waiting for WRC3 to compare them!
Koen V L. gave it a 10:
It's the greatest rally game ever.
Francis M. gave it a 10:
EXCELLENT!!!
Saku O. gave it a 2:
Very bad game. Didn't like at all.
Mike G. gave it a 9:
This stands alongside its great predecessor, Colin McRae Rally 2 for PC and ahead of the disappointing Colin McRae 3. The handling has been improved, the stages feel organic, road surfaces are three-dimentional with crests, bumps and ditches to negotiate, and the graphics have improved hugely from the slightly bland ones seen in the previous title. WRCIII arrives soon, but unless they address the game-ruining collision design in the last outing, it stands no chance of toppling McRae.. This game is the new benchmark.
Adam J. gave it a 10:
Best Rally game ever! Grist has been replaced by Derek Ringer, the handing is much improved as to feel more real and weighted! Each wheel seems to be completely independant and responds to different surfaces by themselves, unlike 3 where you go off the rack, all your wheels go! The difficulty is really well done, easy to start and gets slightly harder but on Greece, its a pain in the arse! Essential
