Summary
DDRMAX will have you working up a sweat to over 65 songs. The 100+ minutes of music include licensed tracks, fresh dance hits, and cool new songs exclusive to the North American release. DDRMAX delivers never-before-seen in-game videos, new gameplay options, blistering 60-frames per second frame rates and the largest song library in franchise history. Further enhancing the gameplay experience is the introduction of the FREEZE ARROW option that freezes on-screen arrows and forces you to modify your dance steps thus increasing complexity and adding a twist to the routine. Popular gameplay options that return in DDRMAX are the Edit Mode that enables you to customize your own dance steps, and the special Work Out mode that tracks the number of calories burned with every move.

With 71 freakin' songs, you'll be playing for months. [Dec 2002, p.70]
GamingTrend
With the massive amount of music, coupled with a evenly paced difficulty scale, DDRMAX is set to keep you entertained for the long haul.

Far and away the best DDR compilation available on the home market, and fanatics will find it more than worth the investment.

Considering the sheer number of songs presented, the game more than makes up for itself value wise, but if you then throw in all the specific choices you can add to a round of dancing, youll find yourself in DDR Nirvana.

The breadth of the lineup puts it head and shoulders above any other home DDR, and DDR Max features a better proportion of danceable tunes in comparison to the Playstation games. [Dec 2002, p.60]
GameCritics
With other games I've felt similar feelings after beating an especially tough boss or solving a taxing puzzle. But when I truly master a song in DDRMAX, the sweat on my face and the swift beating of my heart magnifies the feeling. The soreness in my muscles and the burning in my lungs tell my body that I have actually done something worthwhile. It's a singular sensation that can make other games seem like meaningless fumbling with the controller.

Offering 65+ songs ..Hell you can utilize the game for the music alone.

The best DDR out right now. You get a plethora of songs, better graphics than those found on the PSone versions, the new freeze arrows, and more difficulty settings.

The new Freeze steps (where you hold your foot down in one direction for multiple beats) are a great addition to the high-steppin' action. [Dec 2002, p.202]
Gamer's Pulse
While it appears to be ridiculous, I found it to be the most entertaining game I have played in a long while.

There isnt enough innovation or technical upgrades to make this title stand out from the previous DDR releases. But dont let that stop you, DDRMAX offers up tons of replay value.

For those of you who enjoy this style of game, the magic is back. DDRMAX really delivers.
Official U.S. Playstation Magazine
Easily the biggest and the best DDR yet. [Dec 2002, p.158]
PSX Nation
Delivers the goods big time despite not delivering the Revolution its title promises.

Far from revolutionary. [Dec 2002, p.123]
Game Revolution
Still funky and fun, but not altogether fresh anymore. It almost feels too soon of a release after "Konamix" earlier this year.

If you're a DDR fanatic, there are plenty of songs on here with CRAZY difficulty, heck there's a whole mode that'll give you a heart attack trying to keep up with it. But for a novice player, the easier songs and settings are few and far between.

This game is my big time banner in this world! The only thing I could possibly love more than this is relatives, friends, and family. And since this game totally rocks. I am going to give you an ideal look at my 3 favorite song. #3 is the mega trance hit "Dark Black Forest (Short Trip)", #2 is the monster rock favorite "I Like To Move It", and #1 comes down on the international monster club hit, "Stomp To My Beat".
Duncan S. gave it a 10:
This is the greatest game ever made! You get to burn calories, get more coordinated with your feet, and listen to cool music all at once! I bought this game on Febuary 16, 2003, and have loved it since. All my friends have it too. This version is an edited version of the arcade version of DDR: MAX (6th mix). The only down sides this would possibly have, would be that is is a littly pricy (about $150 if u are really into it, and about $64 if your new.) and that its hard to learn when you start. But those dont matter once your showing off your skills in the arcades now wil it?
Max K. gave it a 10:

Jumbalumba Dancebeat gave it a 10:
I had just played a DDR clone at an arcade, and had frowned upon it at first. WHen I got on I just couldn't stop! I had to go out and get it myself, and what do you know, it's sitting in my living room right now. I played for hours on end and I didn't stop 'till my muscles atrophied.
DDR Freeze gave it a 10:
Always pick sandstorm and peace out exiotic ethnic is sweet too.
Marcus B. gave it a 9:
