GamePro
An absolutely gorgeous game, packing in fantastic animations, lavish player models, and stadiums with cool details like flags waving in the stands.

Perhaps most impressive are the stellar animations. I dont want to exaggerate, but the animation is perhaps the best of any sports game currently on the PS2.

For the authenticity sticklers, you'll be blown away. [Dec 2001, p.164]
BBC Sport
And while "Pro Evolution Soccer" could well reclaim its place at the summit shortly, for now FIFA 2002 - both for playability and aesthetically - is the champion of football games.

FIFA 2002 has consciously observed the strategy and brilliant mix of simulation and arcade gameplay within Konamis ISS series and, in doing so, has made the FIFA series infinitely more approachable for the gamer who would never look at the licensed game, preferring to bury himself in ISS.

With the addition of enhanced graphics, as well as an all-new passing system, fans of soccer will find that this latest FIFA game is the most challenging, most realistic, and also the greatest yet.

The result is a next generation soccer game that is enjoyable to play and more importantly, an accurate simulation of how the game is actually played by the pros.

The thing that stands out the most is the commentary, which is usually a weak part to most sports games.

It still has some ways to go before it replaces Konami's series ["ISS Pro Evolution"] in the hearts and minds of many soccer diehards, but as is FIFA Soccer 2002 is a splendid soccer title.

The best soccer game available. Despite the control flaws and graphic blemishes this game is a marvelous presentation of soccer, albeit slightly watered down for the masses.

All of the changes that theyve made have come through, and whilst it may not play as realistically as Pro Evolution Soccer, the overall feel is more akin to the proper game then previous versions.

FIFA still does soccer best, but there is room for improvement. [Dec 2001, p.93]
Next Generation Magazine
The most authentic feeling (not to mention the prettiest) soccer sim on the market. [Jan 2002, p.78]
PSX Nation
The simple fact that you must now work to get a pass through really makes the game lean more toward the simulation nature. Passes no longer go directly to the teammate but rather in the general area, which reminds me of real soccer games.

What makes Fifa stand out the most is the fact that they're so many options and tournaments to choose from that I lost count.

FIFA 2002 might be deeper, but it isn't more fun. The rich gameplay is negated by clumsy implementation, shabby player models and lack of visual finesse.
Sports Gaming Network
Fifa 2002 certainly isnt as bad as last years version, but when push comes to illegal slide tackle, its not a great deal better and still doesnt even come close to "ISS PE1" let alone "ISSPE2" in terms of realism, depth, and fun-factor, and both of those games are for the PSOne!

It's a bad bad representation of the beautiful game. A complete bastardization of the sport, makes a nice coaster for your beer though. Comparisons to Konami's WE6 are unfair, EA better stick to hockey. ps. The graphics are also c-r-a-p.

This crap can't even compare to ISS PRO '98(!) let alone ISS PRO 1,2 and still those games are on psx1! With PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER in the market there is no reason to buy this game.
PES Addict gave it a 0:
Even if you don't know a damn about soccer, you still would not expect soccer to behave like in this game. The gameplay is awful. Player models are disgusting and their faces look like they have genetic problems. Its a shame that even some of the most popular teams in the world do not have full rosters and instead they just have #1, #2 etc. There are the qualifying matches for the world cup, but still there isn't the World Cup. This means that even compared to FIFA RTWC 98, Fifa2002 is just a crap. You will see this game awful even if you're used to playing FIFA games. So any comparison to Konami's supreme Pro Evolution Soccer is just useless. Fifa2002 is aimed for people who enjoy tapping buttons and seeing balls travelling at supersonic speeds in the top of the net, and marvelling at super miracle saves not even superman dreams to do. Pro Evolution Soccer is aimed for those people who know what real soccer means.

After being blown away by NFL Madden 2002, I expected much from FIFA 2002. What a load of rubbish it turned out to be. Madden 2002 is arguably the best sports game ever (and I'm English not American). FIFA 2002 is arguably one of the worst. From its sinister looking players (like something out of The Dark Crystal) to the ball that loiters bizarrely around the players' feet, this is just not good enough. Why, even the grass looks rubbish on my TV.

I don't even like soccer, and yet this game rocks!

Worst soccer game ever. buy PES and recognize the realness. Fifa sucks. bad gameplay. always the same goals. just a crap.
