With stunning graphics and solid gameplay, you’ll be hard pressed to find flaws that take anything away from this game.

I was expecting a boring and slow-paced fighting title like "Tekken Tag Tournament," but what I found was one of the best fighting games of 2001.

The most serious complaint comes from a lack of options...Despite this, Guilty Gear's aesthetic beauty and rich gameplay are more than enough for fighting fans.

GGX’s solid and responsive control scheme keeps the fighting exciting, although some moves are difficult to execute and require patience to master fully…if at all.

It’s got a cast of characters unlike any other, complete with unique fighting styles and a slew of new gameplay strategies to master. The incredibly intense fighting and over-the-top and utterly insane style aren’t too shabby, either. It’s a far cry from the old Hadokens, Shoryukens and Psycho Crushers of old, but that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily a bad thing.

It plays amazingly well and there's plenty of style and depth to be found here. [Dec 2001, p.161]

2D beat-'em-up aficionados are unlikely to be convinced by the game.

Beautiful visuals, amazing depth and accessibility that few other fighters have been able to offer.

The game is accessible enough that I had a chance to defeat a master that I rarely come close to beating on other games.

Does its job quite well--it's a graphically remarkable yet otherwise conventional 2D fighting game that plays well, sounds good, and offers a memorable lineup of cool characters with countless crazy moves.

A wicked weapons-based 2D delight that should bring joy to fans of fighting games everywhere. [Dec 2001, p.236]
Game Informer
Not only does GGX not push the 2D fighter envelope, it doesn't even give it the slightest edge. [Dec 2001, p.93]
Gaming Age
It has solid game mechanics, excellent visuals and one of the biggest assortments of freaks for characters ever.

XKuei gave it a 10:
Really clean and invitative, the Guilty Gear X is a must-play. Any player who is passionate about this game can easily make his friends forget about Capcom and SNK, at least until the next game comes up. AND after the SNK game is launched, GGX can still make you miss some sleepy nights just trying to master it! My survival maximum is 73... Heading for the 100! Guilty Gear mode!
Shinji I. gave it a 10:
Wonderful 2d fighting game! A must have for every fan of fighters. Capcom could learn from this. Almost reached the level of SNK games.
Raimundo Y. gave it a 10:
Guilty Gear X has got to be the best fighting game ever created! It has unique and outstanding attack graphics and a variety of charcters that you will grow to love.
Rod G. gave it a 10:
This game rocks! Not only does it kick any Capcom game in the rear, the beautiful original character designs is one of the best i´ve ever seen, pick this game up and see why 2d fighters are not dead.
Sol K. gave it a 10:
Absolutely the best 2-d arcade-style game for the ps2.
[Anonymous] gave it a 7:
This game although nothing new, is beautiful to behold and I found myself thinking more of Samurai Shodown than Street Fighter. Note Sam Sho and Street Fighter are my number 1 & 2 favorite fighter titles of all time! Guilty Gear X is fun and though a few moves take practice to master, this game is worth the buy!
