Summary

Inspired by the first Tomb Raider videogame, originally released in 1996, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary is a totally new 2006 adventure for Lara, faithfully preserving the elements which made the original Tomb Raider such a classic. Using an enhanced "Tomb Raider Legend" game engine, the graphics, technology and physics bring Lara's adventure and pursuit of a mystical artefact known only as the Scion up to today’s technology standards and offer gamers a completely new gameplay experience. The puzzles are now more in depth and incorporate environmental interaction and physics driven solutions. The level design and flow of gameplay are inspired by the original videogame making Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary a brand new experience in gaming, while still invoking the nostalgia of the first adventure in Tomb Raiding. PSM3 Magazine UK

Tight design, stunning vision. [June 2007, p.66]

90

Playstation Official Magazine UK

It doesn't hold your hand the way "Legend" did, and it doesn't arbitrarily murder you like the original "Raiders". What it does is excite, impress and enthral like nothing else. [June 2007, p.93]

Play Magazine

Just because she is showing her age doesn't mean 10 years later Lara can't still surprise and excite. [June 2007, p.76]

Eurogamer

It takes the inspirational level design of the original, improves upon the atmosphere, and makes the whole thing so much more fun thanks to the hugely refined control and camera system. Far from being a tired, cynical cash-in exercise of a brand past its prime, Tomb Raider Anniversary goes back to its roots and shows how remakes should be done.

The graphics are stunning on any console, the voice-acting and writing is more Hollywood quality, and the level designs feature obstacles that have been featured in many adventure films. It's perfect in a way that reminds us of Lara's past yet introduces us to modern game physics and design.

With Tomb Raider: Anniversary Crystal Dynamics has successfully updated one of 3D gaming's first classics. It combines everything we loved about the original with the modern gameplay mechanics of Legend.

GameTrailers

Due to the occasional frame rate dip and the inevitable, constant circle strafing, this re-imagining of Ms. Croft’s premier pursuit falls just short of top shelf. But the new control scheme has made it infinitely more playable, and the additions of quick time events and new areas tint it modern, and the grand cave explorer from 1996 is still intact, and still fantastic.

Crystal Dynamics may still be playing things a little too safe...but that essentially means it knows what it's doing. And so far, we're enjoying what that is immensely. The Tomb Raider franchise is important again. [Issue#153, p.62]

In the end, though, it's a testament to the game's quality that even in the face of the imperfect camera and combat, the wonderful adventuring aspects manage to make up for whatever other shortcomings this game may possess. [July 2007, p.54]

It may not offer the same degree of wonder you may remember if you were around for the very first game, but it's a damn fine homage -- and a damn fine game in its own right.

The visual upgrade and redesign breathes new life into the old game and even though it does have a few faults here and there, it is well worth the reduced price point and is a great way to travel back in time and see how the saga of Lara Croft all began.

Everything a remake should be. It makes the most of modern technology to bring a classic game world up to date, throws in simple but intuitive controls and doesn't rely on constant fire-fights to bring excitement.

It's definitely not something for dipping into on a whim, and anyone after brutal, nose-cracking action should stick with "God of War II." But for the rest of us, this is the Tomb Raider game we've been waiting for. And it speaks volumes about the games market that something's that's essentially a remastered update can seem such a breath of fresh air. [May 2007, p.70]

You will find a solid and enjoyable platforming experience that has some flaws, but nothing really detracts from it. Staunch fans of the original will probably take issue with the shorter levels and missing puzzles.

The controls are light-years better than the original but still aren't solid like Prince of Persia's; the graphics are beyond anything the original could muster but still not up to today's standards; and the puzzles are just as tough as the original, but the enemies are just as lame.

Anniversary is not quite the game that Legend was. Though initially I was floored by how well the series had been updated, as time went on and the frustrations piled up, it started to lose the raw appeal. It's good, but not great.

The lack of action will bore most gamers, but unlike its predecessors, Anniversary's puzzles are the main attraction. People searching for a lonely, thinking person's adventure should consider it, especially at only $29.99.

The fact that Crystal Dynamics has managed to turn Tomb Raider into a competent modern adventure is more than admirable, but when judged at face value and on a shelf next to Kratos and company, it just doesn’t stand up. [June 2007, p.106]

J M gave it a10:
This is the greatest Tomb Raider game since the 2nd (and is only bettered by the first 2 as well). I can't count how many times I've replayed it. It's a shame Underworld fell a little short by comparison.

J K gave it a6:
What could have been a very fun game, is ruined by glitchy programming and frustration... after all, who wants to die at the same spot 25 times in a row, just because you cant grab onto a ledge that's RIGHT NEXT TO YOU! If you planning to buy this game, get ready to die A LOT!

Joe S. gave it a6:
This is a game that had incredible potential. Just being based on the original Tomb Raider was enough to make it a potentially incredible game. But although the game is very beautiful, and some of the puzzles are well thought out, the overall gameplay, controls, and camera, gets incredibly frustrating at numerous points in the game. Pros: Based on original Tomb Raider, great story, great graphics, some very clever and challenging puzzles. Cons: The platforming is incredibly repetitive and feels out of place in almost every level. It is incredibly easy to spot where to go since there are always ledges, blocks, and poles that awkwardly stand out. You never feel like you are exploring old tombs or other various environments but instead that you feel like you are in a playground set up for you by the designers that happens to have a backdrop of a tomb or jungle. A lot of the acrobatics and platforming, especially wall jumps and grappling, are incredibly frustrating and certain sections can take numerous times of trial and error before getting it right. Lara frequently falls and dies even on jumps that appear to be simple. Invisible objects, poor collision detection, poor controls and bad camera angles further worsen the problem. The camera is pretty bad and controls at time seem to be inaccurate. Combat is clunky and frustrating. The bullet time dodging is simply not fun and either makes the combat to easy or too hard, depending on the enemy. The camera constantly moves viciously in all directions and makes aiming and shooting very difficult. Boss battles are very poorly executed. FRUSTRATING. The game is full of extremely frustrating sections that require countless trial and error. Even when you know exactly what to do there are sections that almost feel impossible due to the unforgiving controls and camera. To top it off 10 to 15 seconds of loading between each reload makes you want to quit the game after the 20th time trying. Conclusion: The game is indeed gorgeous and has several good puzzles and elements to it but the gameplay and execution ruin the experience. This game could have been at least a 9 out of 10 but its failures devastate its playability. Only old school Tomb Raider fans who want to see the original classic recreated with newer technology will bother completing this game. Even then, once it's over, you will be very happy it is.

Lizzy M gave it a0:
The Trex is IMPOSSIBLE and its right at the start of this unbelievably irritating game. Worse still, when you give up (and you will) it sends you back to the start of the level. Buy Resident Evil 4 or God of War 2 instead to see how far games have improved on this old hat.

nigel m gave it a0:
Unbelievably frustrating gameplay. The control are fiddly and unresponsive, the bosses are almost impossible to get past and with the difficulty level set so high few people will have the patience to struggle through this. A waste of what could've been a great game. If only it had been play tested more.

Mike W. gave it a9:
This is without a doubt the best Tomb Raider since Tomb Raider 2. Great gameplay , nice graphics and lots of extras. Everything any Tomb Raider fan ( or used to be TR fan) could ask for. HIGHLY recommended for any and all gamers that once luved the TR series and especially for those long time fans that stayed through all those dark years of games like AOD. Tomb Raider Anniversary IS the TR game that we have all been waiting for and it is the best "fan service" game in years.

Lame gamer gave it a5:
I would've loved to give this game a 10. Everything about it shines above many other games except one! And regrettably, this is what you advanced gamers have been asking for, which is to make the boss fights TOO FRUSTRATING. Throughout the game it's a leisurely trip, and then comes the centaur, and I literally almost had a heart attack from figuring out what the F I'm supposed to be doing. I had to go online to get a sense of what I was doing wrong! Whenever a game gets to that extremity, lame gamers such as myself usually switch off and walk away. So, all you pros with too much free time to kill, go on and pat yourselves in the back for getting the game companies to listen to what you want. I for one am hanging up my Tomb Raiding gears and hope for a simpler game that lets me kick back relax, just like the old Tomb Raider used to be. 10 for everything in this game, 1 for the boss fights. Works out to a solid 5. (Sure wish there was a cheat mode so I could skip the time-wasting bosses.)
