Game Informer
If you happened to miss this in arcades or for DC, MVC 2 is a sweet 2D fighter worthy of purchase. [Dec 2002, p.122]
IGN
Only slightly slower on the draw in terms of load times compared to its arcade and Dreamcast counterparts, it's an otherwise perfect conversion.

Bringing 56 well-known characters to the screen in tag-team combat, while maintaining the general animation style of the original characters is terrific.

If you haven't played Marvel versus Capcom to death on the Dreamcast, or need to get in touch with your inner 2D child, you can't go wrong with either Marvel versus Capcom 2 or "Guilty Gear XX."

You will never finish the game by random button mashing. If you're not going to spend the time don't buy this game. I'm warning you right now.
GamePro
Although its essentially a port of an arcade game thats two years old, this is one matchup thats a pleasure to kill hours with at home.

It's over-the-top for sure, but surprising playable, and even possible to effectively master. [Oct 2002, p.148]
GameSpy
The only new feature in the PS2 version is an art gallery, so when you factor in the worse sound and lack of VGA, I'd have to say that the Dreamcast version is still the best.

At some parts of the game, you have great sound effects blasting through your speakers but at other parts, you have very sloppy sound effects. What I mean by this having sloppy sound effects is that you sometimes cant hear what your character is saying.

There are easily better fighters on the PS2 though, and so this feels more like an exercise in retro gaming than an essential and accessible purchase.

It represents the first major set of changes the series had ever seen. That said, this game has been surpassed on nearly every front since its original release.

Old school fans, however, will probably feel that MvC2 is a bit too hectic and find themselves hoping for an online PS2 version of "Street Fighter III" instead. [Holiday 2002, p.50]
Total Video Games
Games such as "Guilty Gear X" have shown what true next-gen 2D titles can look like, whilst other titles have more depth and a sufficiently more detailed fighting system for fighting fanatics.

Learn to live with the darn Tonight Show-type BGM tunes, and Marvel vs. Capcom 2s over-the-top madness will win you over as well.

It's essentially a pre-chewed bone that has long since been digested by most fans. So come on Capcom - throw us fans a new bone and stop repackaging your hits over and over again.

The tactical thought and reaction process is basically thrown out the window with the any notion of just WHAT THE HELL IS GOIND ON as characters attacks become ever more extreme and impossible to predict.

The only big downside to all this is a dated engine that shows wear in the animation, which may have passed the test on Dreamcast but loses appeal in today's arena. [Dec 2002, p.88]

Awesome game, used in fighting tourney's such as EVO and I love the mix of marvel vs capcom characters. very ultra rare to get and luckily I got mine for $30 today at Gamecrazy and some places likeGamestop *cough cough* sell it for $60-80 dollars. Graphics aren't bad and who knows they should do another one of these in the future!!!
dave n. gave it a0:
haha! yes, please pay upwards of $50 for this game. By all means, with Marvel UIltimate Alliance coming out soon, why bother?!?
Spiderman gave it a10:
I have been a Street Fighter and Marvel Comics fan all my life, and the combination of the two is simply awesome. This game not only boasts superior graphics, a litany of characters and crazy combos, but also is extremely fun to play ("fun" is an understatement - it is more like addicting). I really like everything about the game, the controls, the combos and the sound. The game is incredible and worth buying if you are a fan of Street Fighter games. Spidey is by far the best character, see if you can perform the elusive 12-hit combo!!!
Jet E. gave it a 9:
This game is one of my favourite fighters of all time. I think it deserves to be up there with the great fighters such as Soul Caliber and Tekken.
Uter gave it an 8:
While it is a bit of a rehash (4th version of basically the same game). But it originally was, and still is a good game. I just wish they included the option to fight 1 on 1 rather than 3 on 3 all the time. All character moves are variants on Street Fighter 2 ones (right, down, right down for example). So while it's good, with just a few minor adjustments it could have been great.
Hairy W. gave it a 10:
Awesome intense a game to master pure genuis.
DeathBlo gave it a 10:
Its pretty sad but i've probably spent over 75 dollars playing the mvc series in arcades . these are awsome games i'm glad that they've been released to the new systems like ps2 and xbox, it keeps these games alive. the best thing about it is that fighting games like these dont really have a shelf life as long as you have someone to play with. in other words awsome games buy them!
