MX vs ATV kicks it up a notch and shifts into high gear as the best selling offroad franchise returns. MX vs ATV?s legendary Rhythm Racing lets players pre-load into massive jumps and clutch through hairpin turns at full speed all while retaining the smooth and authentic feel not found in any other game. Attempt to own the offroad by dominating the innovative new "X-Cross Tournament ". X-Cross brings together 6 unique racing series like Opencross, Supercross, Rally and Supermoto and then crosses them into one ultimate offroad championship. Brand new styles of racing are born as powerful vehicles tear through treacherous trails in the new Opencross mode, while then shifting gears to navigate asphalt and dirt in Supermoto. Players can take control of the Monster and Trophy Trucks as they blitz through rough rivers, rip though the swampy Everglades, and blaze through the desert dunes. Customize your ride with new sponsorship logos on your vehicle. Be the last vehicle standing as 6 players compete online. [THQ]

Game Informer
Looking very similar, both of these versions certainly don't pack the graphical punch as the next-gen versions, and the sense of speed and some of the racing thrills suffer because of it. [Jan 2008, p.89]

While a few annoying quirks threaten to get in the way, overall this is definitely more of the same.

Nothing that raises the pulse or even peaks the interest. [Mar 2008, p.78]

There's a steeper visual disparity between this and the HD-gen versions than many multiplatform games, partly because Rainbow wasn't behind the development of this version. However, if you're not interested in how modern a game looks or feels and you just want to go big now, you'll probably enjoy Untamed.

There are some solid modes here but the graphics and gameplay don't support the experience enough for it to matter.

Now that I've had to time to think about it, it seems that the only reason that MX vs. ATV Untamed for the PS2 exists is to force players to purchase the superior version on the superior PS3 system.

The technical departments, the visuals and audio, bring this ship down before it even left the port.

Call me nostalgic, but even with Untamed's officially licensed music, the racing sponsors and celebrity endorsements, I'd rather play a round of Excitebike any day.

IGN
A weak choice for a racing game, be it offroad or not. There are numerous problems relating to the controls, track design, presentation and so forth. If you're interested in an MX or ATV title, check out the previous release, MX vs. ATV Unleashed as it's much better.

PSX Extreme
A very poorly done game, that suffers from uninspired gameplay, poor track design, redundancy, and innovation. Furthermore, gamers who enjoy a decent looking title will find that MX vs. ATV Untamed is one of the worst visual offenders out there on the PlayStation 2, as it features an absurd lack of texture detail and a never ending supply of ugly.

Untamed is a perfect example of a franchise paying heed to a platform almost out of muscle memory more so than anything else.

Handing off the game from Rainbow to Incinerator Studios was a bad idea. A baaaaaad idea. If you must play the games, stick to the PSP or PS3 versions. No, really.

This game just doesn't get less frustrating, it gets more. The controls are designed pretty well, but it seems as if the objects on screen are disconnected from those controls. It would have been better suited if it was called MX vs ATV: Low G racing.
