Summary

Pro Evolution Soccer 2's "Master League" competition enjoys a number of new features. A third division has been added to the two of the original game, while Konami has also implemented a contract system wherein game players now negotiate with their virtual players if they want to add to their squad. Cup games now take place during the Master League season and squad rotation has become key to a successful season as players protect the fitness of their squad.

PES2 is the greatest football game ever, and the closest any sports title has come to gameplay perfection. There's simply no substitute.

Not only is it the best football game ever created, it’s also one of the closest videogames to come to perfection that I’ve ever played.

It’s a more mature, revamped game of football that’s made us sit back and realise just how young and impressionable the first edition really was... An intelligently enhanced Master League and player attribute system coupled with the cleverest ball physics and player movement yet seen on the PS2 means that Pro Evo remains the finest soccer brand on the market.

Football games can always be relied upon to get the blood up, but there are few games that produce quite such a genuine rush of pleasure upon scoring.

Gamestyle

Certainly true to its name, as evolution rather than revolution applies. This sequel corrects several flaws and tinkers with the game play, but can only be an essential purchase for those without the original or experienced PES addicts.

The game is smoother and small glitches in animation - such as annoying stumbles when tackled - have been sorted out. However, it seems easier to play and flamboyant goals seem more in abundance. Don't get me wrong - you won't get five-all matches which characterise the arcade feel of EA's Fifa series. But there are many more goals to be scored in PES2.

The real culprit in this aspect is the audio. After the great use of Queen and surprisingly decent original tunes for the menus, the commentary is awful. Not as bad as PES 1, mind, just horribly inadequate.

If you want the definitive football experience with sublime gameplay, natural and responsive controls, an awesome league mode and great graphics, then Pro Evo 2 is what you're looking for.

Eurogamer

Pro Evo is still the better game, and will last you longer, but FIFA is arguably the sweeter experience in the short term. FIFA’s presentation, style and gameplay are all great, but Pro Evolution Soccer 2 gives the hardcore footy fan the chance to really live out their footy fantasies.

Putting aside the odd niggle with the commentary Pro Evolution Soccer 2 remains firmly at the top of the tree.

Alex Z. gave it a 10:
A VERY, VERY good game with the spirit of football.

Dave G. gave it a 10:
This is the best Football Game Ever. Hope that in the new Ver PES3 (Release date Oct) has better Commentary, Real Names/Clubs. There is a little bug i hope they iron out as well where if you pass the ball to your player he stand still until the ball gets to his feet, unless your opp has not taken it! Apart from this GREAT game.

Jamie T. gave it a 10:
Amazing gameplay, good graphics, OK commentry, and brilliant everything else. The daddy of them all.

Graeme S. gave it a 10:
It's a flawed ten, if that's possible - complaints about the commentary, for example, or the player names, are justified. Flexibility in terms of creating competitions would also be welcome. But almost without doubt, this is the best football game since Sensible Soccer - and, bearing in mind that Sensi didn't much go for simulation, surely the best football simulation game ever produced. Almost nothing about the actual game of football PES2 presents can be questioned. The feel is wonderful. The odd bizarre offside decision, perhaps...but, oh, I'm clutching at straws. Wonderful.

Tudor G. gave it a 10:
The game is the best soccer game ever but is a bit to fast. The new Winning Eleven 6 final evolution is as good and even more realistic then the Pro Evolution 2. Overall the game is very good and everyone should buy it.

Tiago M. gave it a 10:
BEST EVER... Nothing more to say!

Laurie J. gave it a 9:
BRILLIANT! Minor flaws do not detract from PES2's magnificence as the greatest football sim of all time!
