Summary

PES 6 once again features the graphical and gameplay tweaks that enable each new title to play completely differently from previous incarnations. The shooting system has been the subject of extensive retouching, now enabling players to pull off much more accurate snap shots as well as being able to exert a much larger feeling of control when going for quick half volleys or difficult full volleys. The intelligence of players has seen a marked improvement. For example, players now make more realistic runs into space, often pointing where they would like the ball played. The physical aspect has also been beefed up, with strikers using their sheer presence to turn defenders and likewise, the defenders stepping a yard away to enable them to force players away from goal and not letting them spin into dangerous positions. PES 6 also has a number of new teams licensed for inclusion, with the International roster now featuring the official kits for Argentina, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and Sweden. New gameplay modes have been added and features like the much loved Master League mode also returns, together with a host of new tricks, feints and animations that can be used to bamboozle your opposition. Times Online

In PES6 you can make a sliding tackle and come up with the ball, and the AI has been greatly improved. The passing and shooting have been made harder to master and the players’ movement off the ball is better.

Official Playstation 2 Magazine UK

Genuine gameplay improvements over "PES5", coupled with the new International Challenge mode, make this an essential purchase. [Dec 2006, p.82]

Games Master UK

A low-key farewell to the PS2 rather than the explosive extravaganza we hoped for. [Dec 2006, p.92]

PSM3 Magazine UK

PES6 is the least evolved "Evolution" yet, and ironically, in literal comparison, probably the best... A slower, more physical and realistic sim of football's highs and lows. [Nov 2006, p.30]

IGN

An improved experience rather than a radically new one. The controls are still delightfully responsive and tight, and there’s no doubt it’s still the most accurate football game on PS2.

If you really want to play online though, or the game modes are important to you, the PlayStation 2 game is by far the better choice.

PES has simply never been so good on the PS2 as it is here, and with support for eight players online to keep you coming back I'd say that PES 6 will keep you happy until PES 7 comes along - but that's just a scientific guess!

IC-Games

A huge improvement on release 5 in terms of the bread and butter gaming.

GameSpot

The tweaks that Konami has made to the match engine have produced a more refined game, but there's not a hint of the revolution attempted by EA Sports in most annual FIFA updates. There are also only a handful of new features, chief of which are eight-player online support, an increase in the number of licensed teams, and an international challenge mode.

Play.tm

Its gameplay is challenging, its difficulty levels rewarding, and its action both stylish and thrilling, but the unimpressive aesthetics really can no longer be tolerated - especially in light of current next-generation capabilities that make Pro Evolution 6 look positively archaic.

Pelit (Finland)

Looks a little better than the previous incarnations but is mostly quite familiar.

What we have is solid, and refinements could propel it back to glory, but really it's high time we started over from scratch...It's hard not to think that the series has taken a noticeable step backwards at a time when EA's busy taking giant steps with "FIFA."

The status quo is maintained, which for some will be more than enough, but for us it's starting to get a bit old. [Issue#146, p.76]

Andy N. gave it a6:
I loved all the Pro Evs - until I played this! Its just too hard to get anything out of the game. Impossible to gain the ball, slide tackles just go through the opponents and shots fly wide. Every Watford player is like Ronaldinho. Rubbish!

Kyle L. gave it a10:
This is quite honestly the best game i have ever and will ever play, its safe to say you can go the year without buying another game, such is the depth and sheer quality involved. Some may argue its not a massive step up from PES5 but it never needed to be, the addition of 'other leagues C' because of issues with the Bundesliga copyright has been the best thing to come from the series, now you can make 18 teams of your own, creating all the players, strips and team info. The gameplay is flawless and 6 months down the line there are still moments that amaze and send a shiver down your spine, be it a perfect Beckham free kick, a magic Cristiano Ronaldo run or a thunderbolt volley from Gerrard this truly is another masterclass in sports sims by Konami. Im only worried that ill never put the game down.

S G gave it a10:
This is footballing perfection. There are only two things wrong with the ENTIRE game - the licensing and the commentary. The licenses are being brought in gradually, and the commentary is bad enough to be funny. So, a perfect game. :D

Cristiano gave it a9:
It's undoubtedly the best in the series so far but there are some gameplay tweaks that I'd suggest to Konami: too often a player get a chance to head the ball towards the opponent's goal without being challenged by defenders. Make makring much more tight in the penalty area. As consequence of a too loose marking there are too many opportunities to score that translate into unrealistically wrong shoots and headers. The solution is to not let such situation arise so often. Better AI management then.

Polychronis K. gave it a10:
Perfect game. It is undoubtedly the best soccer game ever.

Apocalypse B. gave it a9:
Still is by far the best footie game in the game industry, but my word it is very unfriendly towards the defensive side of things! The physics engine and game mechs are excellent with improved controls and a quick game restart after a foul, but players with speed and skill are almost impossible to stop! Goals fly in from silly angles, keepers are very poor, and online play is shockingly laggy! All and all it is still 'the special one', but only if you play people in the same room as you!

Emil C. gave it a9:
I play the game since very begining of series. The Winning Eleven has been always better and more chalenging game than PES.It is true for this game too.I play PES6 on top level and opponents does not even come close to shoot on my goal so my wins vary from 2-10:0 depending on streight of opponent team.Players bump into each other too often , the ball bounces too much for real physics and thease bad things are not present in WE10 version wich is more realistic and chalenging than PES.So I give PES 9 and WE10 10 rating.PES6 should be considered as only 2 or more players challange as WE10 puts more challenge and effort in single player games.
