Summary
On the war-torn, poisoned atmosphere of Nu Earth, Rogue Trooper is a genetic infantryman, one of an elite squad of biologically-engineered clone troops, created to overcome the planet's hostile atmosphere, unhindered in their fight against the enemy, the Nort Republic. After witnessing the betrayal and annihilation of his squad at the Quartz Zone Massacre, Rogue has gone AWOL, determined to hunt down the traitor who sent his brothers-in-arms to their deaths. Armed with the latest experimental weapons, Rogue's arsenal offers him a critical advantage over his opponents; encoded bio-chips containing the digitised personalities of his fallen comrades are stored in his gun, helmet and backpack, each offering their unique expertise and assistance, allowing Rogue to strategically outwit a sophisticated enemy. The game is a mix of intense 3rd person action and next generation stealth elements, with complex line-of-sight AI, multiple game paths, full tactical use of your bio-chip operated equipment and both single- and multiplayer online gameplay. Rogue Trooper is so confident in what it's trying to do that it's a wonder Rebellion hasn't been able to pull this off before. The world is amazingly well throught-out, and the action just feels polished.

A surprise package that's rammed with action all the way through. It's a little easy to complete, but don't let that put you off this unexpected gem. [June 2006, p.58]
Times Online
It’s a third-person shooter with smooth, detailed graphics, and a learning curve set so beautifully that even non- shooter fans should love it.

It's amazing when you sit down with a game that you had the lowest of expectations for, only to find an incredibly well put together experience.

Rogue's greatest asset is its variety, which constantly refreshes the experience before that "new game" smell wears off. [June 2006, p.93]
IGN
While it doesn't innovate in any one particular area, it keeps the action fresh by giving the player a ton of flexibility.

One of the best sci-fi military shooters that the PS2 has seen. It's short, but with high replay value and a lot of extra content.

It might not be as huge as Halo or as deep as the Call of Duty games but it is still a fun war game with enough bullets and heart to make this a worthwhile game to play this summer.

With a price tag of just $30, this should be a no-brainer for anyone interested in the genre. Rogue Trooper may not do anything staggeringly new, but it combines action, shooting, stealth, and exploration elements successfully and is well worth a look.

Rogue Trooper is a pleasant surprise for those looking for a slightly different military shooter. What it lacks in glitz and finesse it makes up in sheer fun – and isn’t that what gaming is really all about?

Just sort of middle-of-the-road when it comes to 3rd person shooters. The main reason is the cookie-cutter AI that seems to sort of makes the game a little too easy to play.

An excellent, fast paced shooter but because it launched so late in the life of the current-gen consoles, it is more likely that gamers will pick up a new 360 game or save for future PS3/Wii fare.

A solid game, which features exciting gameplay along with an engaging storyline. While it’s a little on the short side, Rogue Trooper is definitely worth checking out.

Rogue Trooper doesn't approach the inventiveness of a great budget TPS like last year's "Raze's Hell," but it's priced to move.

This is a game whose execution outweighs its ambition with consummate ease, until it becomes a benchmark of sorts for a generation of underwhelming third-person shooters. Wringing the very best out of its simple and solid core mechanics, Rogue Trooper is more accomplished and enjoyable than anyone had a right to expect.

Rogue Trooper, I thank you for the important lesson you've taught me about judging a game by its cover art: That's now onlt accurate 99% of the time. [June 2006, p.111]
Game Informer
The co-op gameplay is a nice touch, but not enough to overcome the bland graphics and familiarity that permeates every second of gameplay. [June 2006, p.112]
Edge Magazine
This thirdperson actioner spikes the familiar with flavour, and a tired but reliable vocabulary of wall-hugs, circle-strafe, grenade lobs and headshots with an invigorating Nu-Earth twang. [June 2006, p.94]
Total Video Games
A strong sense of style that stays close to the source material, Rogue Trooper isn't just one for the fans however; an intensive and sometimes intelligent shooter, Rogue Trooper is certainly one that could interest you if you're looking for a shooter that's a little bit different to the usual.

The graphics are functional when it comes to the large playing areas but exemplary when it comes to the rather bone-crunching despatching of the opposition.

Intuitive controls make Rogue Trooper easy to pick up, but a 'meh' storyline and dull surroundings make it easy to put down, too. [June 2006, p.88]
PALGN
A thoroughly enjoyable third person shooter that has a varied single player mode, and a title that, despite the low hype, is definitely worth trying out. Being a lonesome soldier hasn’t been this fun in a third person shooter for a long time.

Rogue Trooper may not be cutting edge, but as a simple, straightforward shooter, it’s more than capable of delivering a quick action fix.

There is something oddly reassuring about a game that keeps its horizons narrow to get the job done well... A fun, smart and refreshingly uncomplicated experience. [June 2006, p.112]

A rare example of a video game treating its comic book source with due respect.

For a budget title, things could certainly be a whole lot worse. It’s worth a rental at the least, and if you can find some online play then you might just want to consider purchasing it. It’s fun, challenging, captivating, diverse – and cheap.

In the end, Rogue Trooper is a technically solid game. It’s intuitive, looks and plays great…but it’s really not all that compelling.

Rogue Trooper is at times a very exciting and enjoyable shooter, which makes it all the more disappointing that it's over so soon.

It would be easy to write off Rogue Trooper as just another third-person shooter since that's what it pretty much is. Run, gun, a little stealth for flavor--that sort of thing. [July 2006, p.86]
1UP
All told, unless you've got a special place in your heart for this white-eyed, blue-skinned, four-in-one sci-fi warrior, you'll come away with an experience you'll likely forget within a few days -- and a newfound appreciation for the better shooters.

For all its shortcomings, Rogue Trooper is still worth a playthrough for fans of the heavy-firepower, run-and-gun action genre. The spit and polish in the presentation makes it an entertaining ride from start to finish, even if you're not a fan of the comic series. But the lack of lasting depth and challenge keeps it from being more than a quick fix.

For fans of the comic, Rogue Trooper is a satisfactory effort, but it's a hard sell for the rest of us. The average gameplay and short length make it good for a weekend rental, but the weak multiplayer and absence of replay value mean it's not worth adding to your permanent collection.

Where Rogue Trooper rescues itself from mediocrity, however, is in the way it utilises Gunnar, Helm and Bagman. They all perk up with humorous quips and helpful advice, while the futuristic gadgetry is inventive.

The brevity and ease of its single-player campaign and the lack of substance in its multiplayer combine to make for a relatively unsatisfying experience.

Elements such as stealth and stealth kills, blind firing, and the employment of cover in firefights add little to Trooper's mystique; they won't be used much as they slow down the pace to an almost unbearable crawl. [May 2006, p.53]
GamePro
Rogue Trooper tries to be a competant third-person action game with attitude, but it ultimately fails. [June 2006, p.74]

Mat S. gave it an8:
Great story, fun gameplay and easy to use controls, unfortunately the story mode is a bit short and there is no Player vs player in multiplayer. Still hoping for a sequel!
J. L. gave it an8:
One of the best budget releases for the PS2. The graphics, while not the best, get the job done well and keep the look of the comics. Gameplay is satisfying, and the controls are (for the most part) fairly intuitive. The only real gripe is the length of the game, but for 20 bucks, you wouldn't expect to get a Final Fantasy lengths game.
Clive G. gave it a9:
It's was a pleasant surprise to find out just how good this game is. The ingenious ways to interact with your equipment really make the game. There's no right or wrong way to deploy them and the levels are suitably expansive enough to avoid feeling like you're being channel along a linear plot. The graphics are great too and really pay homage to the original comics the character orginates from. There are some moments where the controls are a little fiddly but ultimately, the careful pacing of the game and learning curve make this a great investment. Recommended.
Bazza D. gave it an8:
Hardly a masterpiece but a very enjoyable well crafted game..the briefness of the campaign being my only gripe!
Johnny D. gave it a10:
it is the best action game availabel for ps2, bettar than kilzone and gods of war.
Toni L. gave it a7:
Not the greatest action/stealth game made but nevertheless solid fun for a few hours.
