One of the best game collections i've had the pleasure of playing this year. It deserves high marks for offering a wide variety of game titles and some pretty hefty game titles that fans of the 16-bit era will appreciate.

With such faithful recreations of classic SEGA Genesis games, and a few not-so-classic ones, I can finally take my Genesis out of the closet and get some use out of it as a doorstop.

All told, the Sega Genesis Collection is the cream of the crop when it comes to old-school game compilations, rising above every other entry in the crowded genre to date.

To be blunt, Sega Genesis Collection is the definition of essential gaming, and it has a very rightful place on the shelves of any PS2 owner looking for an inexpensive and high-quality addition to their library.

The sheer volume of what’s on offer here, combined with the true classics that are included on the disc, make the collection a must-buy for any retro fans or just those who can never get enough of one of the industry’s oldest companies.

There's no doubt that at least 10 of the 32 games included will suck away a few dozen hours of your time. At $20, this a bargain almost impossible to pass up.

I know everybody’s excited for downloading classic games on Nintendo’s Virtual Console, but if you’re looking for the best value for your old-school dollar the best choice is the Sega Genesis Collection. For the low price of $20, you get 28 of the best-loved (and in a few cases, least-loved) 16-bit games ever.

Despite the small gripes, overall this is a great collection of classic Genesis titles. While the Wii's Virtual Console promises to have at least some of these titles available for download in the near to immediate future, Sega Genesis Collection offers a nice, compact alternative.

If you used to have a Genesis, you need to pick this disc up and relive some good times. If you always wanted to get one but were a Nintendo loyalist, then you should pick this up as well and see what you were missing.

As far as compilations go, Sega Genesis Collection is pretty damn solid - but where the hell is "Streets of Rage"?

With 30+ games, there's really something for everyone, including nostalgists who will appreciate included interviews with Sega designers who worked on many of the games. [Holiday 2006, p.80]

Exactly what it should be: a fun-filled romp down memory lane for the old-schoolers, and an entertaining glimpse into the past for the younger gaming class. Besides, one of the best new features is something we can all identify with- you can save.

Games like "Shinobi III," "Phantasy Star IV" and "Gain Ground" are worth the cost of admission alone. While a real Genesis console can offer a better-looking and sounding experience, Sega Genesis Collection is the next best thing.

A pretty sweet package. It may not have Activision Anthology's flashy wrapper, but Sega Genesis Collection is fun personified.

Despite the lack of polish in the outer shell, the meat of the Sega Genesis Collection is mighty tasty and in the end that's all that matters.

The best retro compendium around. [Christmas 2006, p.98]

This is not a game you will play for hours and hours on end, but we can almost guarantee when friends are about you will pull this out for a game every once and a while.

In these days of paying over the odds to download crippled Virtual Console games, and pretending not to notice how many Microsoft points are on your credit card, this latest compilation takes on an even greater value and may even - whisper it - encourage a few of us to finally take the original boxes out from under the bed, and consider putting them lovingly in the attic.

Retro gaming is obviously an acquired taste, but with Sega Mega Drive Collection the legendary Japanese platform-holder-come-publisher have granted us a generous and varied journey into their almost unrivalled back-catalogue.

Take it all together, though, and it's a pretty clear snapshot of what made Sega's 16-bit console worth remembering. It's a great nostalgia trip, an even better history lesson, and hopefully the first in a long series of Genny revivals.

A superb package that's much more than an exercise in nostalgia. [Feb 2007, p.84]
Worth Playing
Though there are a few classics missing from the group, the compilation is a nice mini-encyclopedia of games that still carry appeal more than a decade later, and is a good deal at $20 for Sega fans and old school gamers alike, with a few added unlockables granting it a bit more value.

One of the best compilations ever, we're just hoping that Sega bring out some compilations for the Sega Saturn and the Sega Master System.

Like most collections (and like most of life), this is a case of a handful of superstars flanked by quite a few ho-hum efforts that should have been sidelined in favor of better games from a wider array of genres.

Still, for the most part, the better games in this collection outweigh the terrible ones and some still hold up quite well. [Jan. 2007, p.78]
GamePro
Though the Genesis played second fiddle to the Super Nintendo, it had some awesome titles and thankfully, there are enough of them on this disc to merit a look.

J L. gave it a6:
While this is a great selection of games, I think that retro-gaming has finally lost it's appeal to me. If you're still into it, and love Genesis games, then consider this a 10 but for my money I have to give it a 6.
John M. gave it a10:
A great variety of classics from every genre of the 16-bit era, and a few others too.
