Electronic Gaming Monthly
Boasting some of the most inspired aesthetics since "Panzer Dragoon," SG conjres a sense of flight and freedom so convincing, you'll want to nose dive out of the sun and into and enemy's blind spot just because you can. [August 2002, p.130]
Gaming Age
A shooter fan's dream, and it's chock full of personality and presentation.

Despite being one of the shortest games I have ever played, I still recommend SkyGunner. I've always wondered what Gladius or R-Type would be like in 3D. Now I finally have an answer.

If you’re into lighthearted, capricious flight games whose inventive and creative graphics are matched only by its gameplay, than you’d be well advised to pick this game up.

An odd camera which focuses on the enemies seems a rotten idea, then you get used to it, and discover a fairly deep and great looking shooter. [July 2002, p.82]
TotalGames.net
Most notably, the view is always looking toward a selected target while your ship can fly in any direction – even toward the screen. This makes for some unusual yet still remarkably fun dogfight situations.

A rough diamond, beneath that stuttering framerate is a wonderfully innovative shooter that is a joy to play and brings some great ideas to the genre.

Sky Gunner’s gameplay has old school written all over it, and I mean that in a good way. The game’s slowdown might mar some of the game’s appeal, but if you can look past that, you have a charming and engaging experience to look forward to.

Solid action will pump you up and the storyline will keep you involved.

If you can get past the technical difficulties, it's a great action game, not to mention quite the visual showcase for PlayStation 2 and its developer's artistic abilities.

Though its visual style is soft and often flowery, the pace of the action is maddening and intense.

Beautifully created albeit slightly flawed, filled with some truly stunning gameplay moments and set pieces, it is a game shamefully overlooked by many, and is certainly worthy of greater recognition.

What covers most for its faults are its replay value and abundant personality. [August 2002, p.20]
Official U.S. Playstation Magazine
The game just has a wonderful style to it. [July 2002, p.102]

There's no doubt it's a fun game-- after all, who doesn't like hopping in a plane and making a rain of lead-- but its flaws make it a bit inaccessible to someone new to the style of play.

The steep learning curve and sometimes confusing objectives detract from the fun. [July 2002, p.83]
Adrenaline Vault
Enough charm to rekindle the joy of the old-style score-based blasters. However, technical problems like the poor interface, unreliable frame rate, and steep learning curve really gouge out the fun.

So is it worth your 50 Messetas? If you like shooters, or are a collector of Atlus titles, I’d have to give a resounding yes. For anyone else, I’d call this one a renter. It’s easily completed in a weekend.

Cless-kun S. gave it a 9:
This game hits the mark on old fashion shooters brought into the new 3d world. With large, beautiful airships and a classical touch this game rekindles our love for shooters. With old fashion designs mixed with modern imagery this Miyazaki's (Princess Mononoke/Nausicaa Valley of the wind) finest work. From Destroying squadrons of aerial warships to tiny fighters this game would be perfect but yet has its small flaws. The worse flaw is the slowdown you might run into during the heavy full screen action where the battle is most intence, the slowdown doesn't last long but can throw you off your key sometimes. Second is the shortness of the game with 5 stages per charcter. Although you play thru each character thru basically the same stage, each play a different role (eg. destroy flagship or destroy the fighters). Other than these two main flaws the game is extremely challenging and an anime brought to life. Fans will love the opening sequence song and will definately love the optional japanese voice overs with english subtitles. So if your looking to bring an anime to life this is the game you should seek. Prizes are also given for top scores on the official site. Great Job for bringing over such a great title Atlus.
