GamerWeb Sony

A breath of fresh air and certainly a game any tennis fan or PS2 owner shouldn’t be without.

Some clumsy colouring on the USA courts also means the ball can often get lost on screen making returns a gamble. Add in waif-like character models and it can often become a chore to keep an eye on the action.

Good but not great, Smash Court doesn't need much to evolve into an awesome tennis game.

Play Magazine

Control is natural and fast, and a simple command interface makes Smash Court pure fun to pay. [Mar 2002, p.52]

Media and Games Online Network

One of the most fun tennis games ever created, hands down.

Game Informer

Sadly, the aforementioned stars look a little chunky, due to the odd character models, and move like they've hit the Wimbeldon locker-room buffet one too many times, giving the game a much slower feel than "Virtua Tennis." [Apr 2002, p.74]

Gaming Age

It’s not as fluid as the "Virtua Tennis" series, but its timed gameplay plus pro player and tournament package make it a solid effort.

While Smash Court isn't quite as polished or deep as "Virtua Tennis," there's still plenty of fun to be had with this game.

Compares favorably to "Tennis 2K2" in many respects but lacks its overall level of polish and spot-on controls.

Electric Playground

A hard working tennis game that has lots of guts, but not so much finesse. However, the plusses do outweigh the minuses by quite a bit.

The so-so visual and sound package contributes to the middling quality of the game, too.

This is so pick-up-and-play that it's perfect for first-time gamers. [May 2002, p.102]

Because it demands a lot of precision during play, sometimes the fun gets lost in the shuffle.

PSX Nation

Namco has blatantly stolen every single positive aspect of Sega's Hitmaker tennis games to create its own, and that's just sad.

The game seems a bit slow in the response department. [May 2002, p.26]

Tico T. gave it an 8:
I think the gameplay and the level of the AI is awesome. I think the graphics could be much better and smoother. Can't wait for the sequel. I have Virtua Tennis 2 (T2K2), I also think it is a great game, but it's to easy to win. Also T2K2 doesn't have the real grand slams in it. Anyway if you like a challenge and are prepared to out smart the computer with tatics and real tennis then BUY THIS GAME! Namco hurry up with Smash Court 2 !

Alex R. gave it a 2:
A decent enough tennis game but unfortunately Namco have tried to dress it up too much. Rather than just playing tennis in the tournament mode you have to do certain challenges. For instance; scoring four points with volley shots in a game will give you more money? Why? Surely winning a match should mean you get prize money, the fashion that you did it in should not matter. If this were the case in true tennis than Pistol Pete Sampras wouldn't have earnt half of what he has. This game also lacks characters you can either be four men or four women, (listed above) which means during tournament mode in the first and second rounds you play no-hopers with names like 'Red Rage' or summit. This enables you to win the first two matches but when you face Sampras in the Q/F he thrashes you. I was going to give this game a 4 but since writing this, all SCTPT's faults have been brought to the forefront of my mind. Buy it and be disappointed!

Trevor Y. gave it a 2:
Poor, no depth. You play first to win three games and not even one set... I got to the semi-final on me first try. I wouldn't even give this game away as a gift.

Manu M. gave it a 10:
This is the best game ever.

Phillip L. gave it an 8:
I think that this is a really fun game to play and th graphics are ACE. but it would have been better if there was more players to choose from

Mark V. gave it a 7:
Takes a bit of time to get into, but other than that good game...

Emanuele S. gave it a 10:
With Anna Kournikova, this is a WONDERFUL GAME!!!
