Summary
There's trouble in Bikini Bottom! Someone has stolen King Neptune's crown, and it appears as though Mr. Krabs is the culprit. Despite being passed over for a promotion by Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob and his faithful but dimwitted friend Patrick volunteer to make the perilous journey to Shell City to retrieve the crown and save Mr. Krabs' life. On a heroic, comedic quest that takes them to new and unexplored territory, we see SpongeBob and Patrick as we've never seen them before. Play as SpongeBob or Patrick working together to save Mr. Krabs and all of Bikini Bottom each with their own set of unique maneuvers. Interact with all your favorite characters from the movie including authentic voices and special cameo appearances. Earn "manliness" points to get the coolest power-ups ever like the "CartWheel Attack", "Electric Guided Sonic Wave Guitar" and the "Macho Bash!" [THQ]

Official U.S. Playstation Magazine
The beauty of SpongeBob is that there's as much in it for an adult a there is for a 5-year-old, and this game captures that essence perfectly. [Dec 2004, p.125]
3DAvenue
A game which can be played by both adults and kids who want a simple, cute game to watch time fly while their having fun.

The Spongebob Squarepants Movie has impressed me so much that I'm almost embarrassed to admit it. There's loads of variety to keep anybody quiet for ages - it even kept me up, playing until the break of dawn!

Reasonably good-looking, occasionally challenging (even for grown-ups), somewhat lengthy (15+ hours) and a little too nuts for its own (and young gamers’) good, this game captures the spirit of its source material remarkably well.

Controls feel responsive and the camera rarely hinders your view of the action. And the humor of the show practically seeps out of every clamshell and bed of kelp you cross.

The game is designed in such a way that it behooves the player to not just pass levels but excel at them. [Jan 2005, p.69]
Game Chronicles
Luckily, Heavy Iron stuck to the highly successful formula of the show and the quirkiness of its characters to make an entertaining experience.

Enjoyable and amusing to play, just as the episodes are to watch, the adult humour is here hidden amongst the child-like silliness of the game.

If you’re a SpongeBob fan, you’ll definitely appreciate this game because it’s the closest you’ll ever be to being the porous fool himself.

Aside from the occasional glitch, the game is relatively solid and mechanically sound. It's challenging without being frustrating, and it's full of humor and surprises, making it the kind of game that will appeal to a wide range of gamers.
Stuff
The irreverent, goofball sense of humor from the show is intact, which makes up for the sometimes iffy controls.

Although it may not have all the bells and whistles that some of the better platformers are coming out with these days, it does have enough to where kids are going to be having an enjoyable time playing it.

The core gameplay is simply tired. Jumping around collecting random doodads is just old - it's time to move on to new objectives in platformers. [Dec 2004, p.167]
PSM Magazine
Lacks the polish and tuning of the last game in both controls and design. [Holiday 2004, p.94]
IC-Games
Spongebob neither sinks to the bottom of the sea bed, nor rises to the top. Instead he is somewhere between, swimming with the crowd of movie to game cash-ins. Kids will enjoy it, adults will hate it, and no one will remember it.

As a game, Spongebob is saved by the comedy, with all the childish charm and hidden adult innuendo from the TV shows included in the game, and hardcore fans will absolutely love it.
The surrealism of the game’s source occasionally bleeds through with the characterisation and plot, but it feels wasted in the banality exhibited in most of the game.

This game is the best SpongeBob game and the best platform game out for the PS2! There's just so much to do and go but never gets annoying or frustrating. You can ride the Patty wagon, collect Goofy Goober tokens, earn fab combos, play as SpongeBob & Patrick, Go tongue boarding, Earn rewards, and so much more!!! This game is a must have for all SpongeBob fans and even if you're not really a fan of SpongeBob but love platform games, this game is still for you! Best PS2 Platform game ever!!!
