Summary

Prove yourself as the greatest golfer of all time by taking on the legends in the prime of their careers -- on their terms. Do you have what it takes to beat Jack Nicklaus in his heyday with a bag full of wooden clubs or Tiger Woods with his modern-day equipment? For the first time, both analog sticks control each shot from tee to green. The left analog stick controls your swing, and the right analog Shape Stick dictates ball trajectory and putt strength. Back your challenges with wagers before any shot or round. Bigger odds are given to special accomplishments, so reap the largest rewards for nailing the toughest shots. Experience 15 beautifully detailed courses including Pebble Beach Golf Links, St Andrews, Reflection Bay, Doral Golf Resort, and more as you play as or against Tiger Woods and 16 other PGA TOUR players, including the newly added Chris DiMarco, Mike Weir, Ian Poulter, and Luke Donald. New Gamebreaker Meter: Build confidence to trigger Gamebreaker situations, and boost your power and accuracy by making great shots and posting low scores. [Electronic Arts]

BonusStage

Other than the sound, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06 does everything needed to help give the franchise a breath of fresh air. It’s nice to see that EA Sports can do more than just throw in one new play or change one part of a game.

Pelit (Finland)

There is really very little to complain about. After my first hole-in-one I am still desperately chasing another one despite the odds. Highly addictive. [Oct 2005]

AceGamez

It looks and sounds better than ever, with a host of real and fantasy modes and characters, a mix that offers a lot of variety for both casual and hardcore gamers. As always, it's a game that's easy to pick up and very difficult to put down.

PSM Magazine

The only bogeys are a still-clunky interface - no auto-save, you can only adjust stats at certain times, etc. - a skittish camera, and overly long pre-and-post-swing reaction shots that drag on and on. [Nov 2005, p.85]

Stuff

This year's Tiger feels more complex and sophisticated than ever. Putting is more challenging (e.g., total bitch)... Yet, the game is still accessible to armchair golfers, thanks to those welcome arcade-y touches.

EA's latest is a touch harder, comes with a reworked swing system that's a great compromise between finesse and simplicity, and includes a smooth new career mode. What's not to like?

GameSpy

The first game in the series that doesn't fully deliver the goods. One can't help but feel like the series needs a shot in the arm to get players excited again.

eToychest

2006's biggest flaw is the lack of change. Players who own Tiger’s 2004 or 2005 incarnation have little reason to buy this edition.

Next Level Gaming

Easily the best golf game to date on a console. The gameplay is solid and has been refined over the years. The course selection is great, and the Tiger Proofing adds more to those courses.

The new putting system is improved over the previous method, but it needs some refining before it can be mentioned in the same breath as the analog swing.

Those who haven't played the previous games will be awestruck by how much depth the game has, and how much it takes to get the hang of each function.

The best golf game available so far. The game features excellent graphics, a large range of detailed real life courses and a large number of controllable characters.

Even with the disappointing sound aspect, it has improved on its previous faults and included enough extra to warrant a purchase.

Given that everything is still so familiar at the core, there's no way of getting around the feeling that all these new options are ultimately still baby steps in the evolution of the franchise.

Visuals are just as refined and gorgeous as previous versions of the series, with new and subtle differences added to give the game increased flare and a more appealing look to the eye.

It's not a revolution, but it's an improvement. [Nov 2005, p.140]

Electronic Gaming Monthly

For years I've been saying that the only significant problem with the Tiger games is the putting interface. So what did they do this year? They made putting harder by removing caddy tips and employing the same analog swing interface as tee shots.

What remains to be seen is whether EA can reintroduce a suitable element of difficulty to knock the series back in the right direction without forcing an unintentional bogie.

You will find success early and often in Tiger 06, and though that may not sound like such a bad thing, it isn't necessarily true to the spirit of the sport, where triumphs--however minor--need to be earned, not simply offered to you for the taking.

It is still far from revolutionary, but Tiger Woods PGA Tour '06 is the virtual golfer's best bet for a realistic round out on the links.

A great game, but telling you this is a must have title is just silly. While the game is extremely well done, there is just not enough here to warrant adding another Tiger game to your collection.

It's certainly not earth-shattering fare, but as an immersive golf title full of Pringletastic depth, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2006 is simply the best around. [PSW]

Despite the knocks against rivals mode and the fact that the new controls are mostly borrowed from what many consider to be a more simple golf franchise, Tiger Woods 06 is still a solid game. Where rivals fails, the more realistic PGA Tour mode is still fun, as is skills 18, a set of target-based minigames.

Official Playstation 2 Magazine UK

There are no massive revolutions since last year but this still easily retains its 'king of the swingers' crown. [Nov 2005, p.118]

Game Revolution

This year they tried to futz with the gameplay, but the changes are so minute that most veterans will seamlessly transition from last year’s game to this one. Whether or not it’s worth the green fees depends a great deal on your love of the game, but chances are you’ve already aced this course.

While I have to give the developers credit for trying out a whole bunch of new ideas, I'd much rather play last year's version. But if you like your golf painfully realistic, maybe you'll prefer it this way. [Nov 2005, p.114]

I'm surprised and saddened that this was outdone by a two-year-old game. EA's trying some new things here, but they don't quite work yet.

Note: User votes are NOT included in the Metascore calculation.

Scott Q. gave it a4:
Worst Tiger Woods game so far. The game just plays far to inconsistent. All other versions were superior. The new pieces introduced are kind of useless and gameplay is subpar by comparison.

Timmy H. gave it a2:
I was very unhappy. This game could be great if it did nto take forever to load, and then freeze up. All the TWG games before were much better. I don't think they even played it before they sold it.

Yendor T. gave it a2:
The puting in the game is the worst, lack of trying effort on the behalf of game programmers that I've seen. '03, '04, '05 (Tiger Woods) were all better.

Christopher C. gave it a0:
Anyone who thinks golf games are fun should try the real thing. I have been playing for three years now and love it. Golf games however, lack the realisticness of the actual game. Success is far too easy to produce on the game. Try playing it for real...you'll enjoy it. All golf games are below par and should be treated as such.

Pratik P. gave it a10:
Awesome game! I like the way they're making it into an RPG-style experience with the time travel stuff. The shot shaping is really cool!

Michael D. gave it an8:
I've only been playing for a couple of hours, but I like Tiger Woods 05 better... challenges seemed to be organized better, and 05 definitely looks better, at least on my HDTV.
