What EA Sports' "NHL 2002" is to videogame hockey,..."PGA Tour 2002" has become to videogame golf: the simulation standard-bearer to beat.

Simply put, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2002 does so many things right that its hard to imagine any golf game that existed before it, "Links" included.

The controls, though initially frustrating, do deliver the feel and accuracy of the real sport. Couple this with both real and imagined course imbued with the usual EA sense of atmosphere and spectacle and Tiger Woods looks as good as it plays.

At the very least, a 72-hole tournament -- the mainstay of PGA Golf -- should have been part of the package.

This is easily the best PGA Tour game for any console since "PGA Tour Golf II" for the Genesis.

The intensity level in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2002 is certainly high, especially in critical situations.

Overall the game has a more arcade style to it than past PGA Tour titles. And, though the graphics are borderline atrocious, this is a giant step in the right direction for golf videogames.

Some gamers may argue over whether Tiger Woods is better than "Hot Shots 3," but one thing is for certain: the gap in quality between the two games has certainly been narrowed to the point where theyre just about even.

The controls do take a while to learn - but an excellent tutorial helps you grasp the essentials fairly quickly.

Even with some shortcomings, it's the most enjoyable golf game that I've ever played.

The host of graphical and gameplay improvements featured in the 2002 edition make this year's Tiger Woods far superior to previous entries in the series...the best golf simulation currently on the console market.

I love it...The greatest thing about this game is the shot interface. [Apr 2002, p.107]

Not only is it an accurate technical recreation, but also a surprisingly engaging one. [Mar 2002, p.26]
IGN
It's a remarkably intuitive control method, though, in comparison to the traditional tap-tap-tap power meter system of yore.

While there's room for improvement in terms of graphics and sound, it easily makes up for it in realism.

I have a feeling golf enthusiasts will love the amount of detail EA has sunk into this game, but for the average gamer, this one is bound to go straight into the long stuff. [Apr 2002, p.77]
Electronic Gaming Monthly
Once you catch on, using the stick feels fluid and natural thus more immersive. [Apr 2002, p.141]
GamePro
The same frustrating, albeit unique controls remain intactresulting in the same inconsistent shot making that was felt last year.

While multiplayer accessibility is limited, head-to-head play is better than it ever has been before.

The swing meter is the only real obstacle to your enjoyment, as it completely changes the way the game feels and plays from more traditional titles.

Once you have mastered the control functions, this is a great game. The configuration of adding power and spin, through none too easy button taps, makes for more realistic gameplay.
David R. gave it a 10:
Excellent, closest to real golf I have ever seen. The new swing technology is so much better than the old metered swing.
