Summary

Take command of the Ghosts through a series of missions that range from demolitions, to search and rescue, to all-out firefights for survival. Russia has fallen under the control of ultra nationalistic politicians intent on rebuilding the Iron Curtain. This leads to conflict with NATO as Russia attempts to reclaim the breakaway Republic of Georgia and the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. As the war escalates, casualties mount, hostages are taken and the Ghosts are sent in.

Gamer.tv

The need to command troops might not suit everyone, or the slower, more measured approach to combat. But if you want a unique war game for your console, Ghost Recon is your only choice.

GamerWeb Sony

By far a breath of fresh air on PlayStation 2, a system with far too many FPS games that simply have lackluster plots and characters that are basically on a mission to kill everything using the biggest explosions possible.

GameReviewer

As a result of the somewhat simplistic design (which allows you to enjoy Ghost Recon even if you've not played a lot of tactical shooters) and the valuable multi-player modes, this is one game that may not receive a really high score but still comes highly recommended.

Caution and calculated planning provide the most satisfying rewards, taking the single-player experience into some unexpectedly satisfying territory. [Jan 2003, p.81]

Gamer's Pulse

In every respect besides multiplayer, Clancy’s Ghosts eliminate those damn pansy SEALs across the board.

While not as hard-core as some tactical FPS, Ghost Recon nevertheless does take a little getting use to if you’re new to this genre.

To date this is the best example of what the genre can offer and is an ideal starting point for those interested in the science of modern warfare.

A ghost of its former self.

Official U.S. Playstation Magazine

The levels are huge, but you don't feel like there's much freedom because the game very strictly controls where you can and can't go. [Feb 2003, p.109]

Shoots itself in the foot thanks to a ponderous control system.

Gaming Maxx

Those looking for a brake from "SOCOM" will sadly be disappointed by what this game has to offer with a simply laid out list of options which simplify the game to a point where its no fun at all.

They’ve simplified the game enormously and as a result it suffers.

GameSpy

Dumbing a game down for consoles is one thing, but it's another thing entirely to give the player so many advantages that the game is no longer fun.

PSX Nation

It’s an OK military shooter that just can’t measure up to the likes of “Red Faction II” or “Timesplitters 2” in variety, options and replayability.

Ghost Recon’s visuals took a deadly hit, too. Characters don’t move in a realistic manner and there’s less detail on both the soldiers and the environments.

GameSpot

Simply not a very fun game. Its unchallenging gameplay mechanics, substandard graphics, and lack of any real multiplayer modes make it the worst iteration of the game yet.

It is nearly impossible for the player to fail on any but the hardest level of difficulty. [Jan 2003, p.26]

Sure, this game might be more accessible now, if you define "accessible" as "easily mastered by the severely brain-damaged."

Chris C. gave it a9:
This is an awesome tactical game. (I wouldn't call it a shooter as only about 2/10 of the time is actually engaged in shooting conflict, the rest is planning and manouvering). The team controls are slightly clumsy, making it occasionally hard or impossible to control the two teams to do what you want.

Mike H. gave it a9:
Yeah but how the h@ll do you kill the tank on level three.!!!

JAKE J. gave it a10:
This game is da bomb yo. Most people compare the game to stuff like medal of honor and stuff like that but its totally a different genera.

Grant F. gave it a 6:
I thought this game was well put together but overall a bit of a let down. The game looks lovely in terms of detail and it's nice to have the ability to command your troops however, I found it very easy and very short. The only reason I bought this game was on the strength of Splinter Cell, which I was very impressed with, and while attention to detail was similar the missions were in GR where too easy and very very short.

Tel M. gave it a 10:
Compared to previous Clancy games like rainbow six and so on, there are much more advancments to this game, more weapon optoins, more comand options and simply better missions, not like the kind where you have to sneak through an entire level without being seen, "nearly impossible" , This game just like previous Clancy games is a winner, and shouldn't be compared to games that lack patience.

Seymore Butts gave it a 9:
First of all Tom Clancy games are meant to be realistic. Ghost Recon requires you to plan, use cover and stealth, and control of you weapon. This game just isn't the run and gun shooters like Red Faction. If you get hit in the head your dead. Sometimes you can take a few rounds before kickin the bucket. The gear and weaponry is all realistic which is a plus for all us gun nutts out there. The controls are easy to get use to. The graphics are great for ps2. The whole idea of this game is realism. It's great to see the tracers fly back and forth during intense firefights, and seeing your teamate with a m249saw mowing down the tangnos. I love the fact you can use mounted .50 cals, m136 anti-tank rockets, and gernade launchers. This game rocks and anyone who says it doesn't probably smokes crack...

Gary M. gave it a 10:
Well I've only had it for 3 days but so far its wicked! Birlliant multiplayer 22 levels and go around with a sniper rifle shootin people who least suspect it is fun fun fun!!!! And its not just going around a field, there are street levels, boat yard missions (well at least one, as i say ive only had it for 2 days and am on the second mission!)
