Personally the differences between the older Codemasters version and the new Sega version are not enough to warrant the extra price tag.

As close as you can get to playing the real thing, it's an excellent game and the graphics and animations are superb. But, it requires a lot of playing time to succeed at the highest level and this may put a few people off.

Beginners are assisted by simple controls and cueing aids, although it can be frustrating when opponents pounce on a mistake to clean up the table.

WSC 2005 is an updated version of last year’s WSC 2004, and if you do own the previous version, then I’m not really sure that this year’s outing brings anything especially new to the table (sorry) for casual fans, but what it does offer is an entertaining snooker game with a variety of play modes.

It’s fluid and entertaining to play, and feels scarily realistic at times. Like in real life, perfecting the game takes some time.

Those who have little to no interest in snooker won’t be converted, and even fans will probably wish the game had a little more luck built into its structure.

I can't recommend this year's edition over last year's, because in my opinion, last year's is smoother and simply more fun to play.

It may not be the fastest or most attractive game around, but in terms of accuracy and coverage of snooker, you won't find better.

Well, the developer forgot to put any of that all-important spin on the ball, or never took a risk and tilted the cue. It's a shame really.

Perhaps the next generation of consoles will be graced with an innovative, graphically smooth and easy-to-engage-with snooker sim. For those of us stuck in PS2-land, however, we are left with another stultifyingly slow round of digital-snooker.

In its genre, World Snooker Championship 2005 is a quality product. It’s only real problem is, that snooker just does not translate into a videogame. With the same money, you could play for hours at the local pool house for real. [June 2005, p.63]
