It has made the game feel more responsive and added more immersion thanks to the fans animations and various chants.

With a strong showing, 989 Sports' World Tour Soccer 2005 shows that the developer may have the makings of a dynasty on its hands.

The tight controls are a cinch for novices, but obsessive attention to detail will score with fanatics.

Although the game won't make its competitors sweat, it will definitely make them keep an eye out for future World Tour Soccer games. [June 2004, p.86]

It does many things right, and if youre a moderate soccer fan, you cant help but to like this years World Tour Soccer.

The pieces dont fit completely together and the delay in the control takes the blame for that one. Combine that with a basic camera that could be doing a lot more to show off the action and the experience loses a bit of its luster in practice.

And not to have online gameplay in a time where online games are up and coming? For the PS2 not to have it's flagship game online is not right.

Although it hasnt made up any ground against its competition, it doesnt step backwards either. What World Tour Soccer 2005 does offer is an enormous variety of options ranging from over 900 teams to 18,000 plus players.

The problem is with the consistent near-perfection reached by the "Winning Eleven" series and EAs "FIFA" efforts providing overwhelmingly solid presentation, its very, very hard to find any reason to recommend this game when the same chunk of change will buy you a more polished and frankly engaging experience.

While World Tour Soccer 2005 may not play better than "Winning Eleven 7," it's certainly a nice alternative to EA's "FIFA." [June 2004, p.71]
WHAM! Gaming
Action oriented fans should steer clear of this title, but those looking for an accurate soccer experience should at the very least give this title a try.

Despite its great game modes and the amazing lineup of teams and players, World Tour Soccer 2005 doesnt quite live up to the reputation or expectations of last years amazingly addictive game.

World Tour Soccer 2005 is undone by the delay between button pressing and action on the screen. If it ran smoothly it would probably give Winning Eleven 7 a run for its money this year. However, the delay destroys any possibility of that happening.

The game controls pretty smooth, except when your player gets the ball. In perhaps an effort to emulate the awkwardness of dribbling, all of your movements are delayed slightly.

Solid, but not spectacular. Even so, I'm tempted to give WTS 2005 brownie points simply because I can play as West Brom without them being in the Premiership. Boing boing!

What it basically boils down to is long animation run times and, as a result, the system taking a second or two to recognize player input for the next movement. [Aug 2004, p.7]
Gaming Age
If soccer is your gig, if you found FIFA too light, Winning Eleven too intense, you should pick up World Tour Soccer.

The AI for your defenders is horrible. Attacking forwards don't have the plague, fellas, just the ball. [May 2004, p.99]

Im having fun playing this game and there are enough options here to keep me playing for a while. From a non-soccer fan like me, that speaks volumes.

Compare it to the user-friendly FIFA 2004 and the overall-perfection of Winning Eleven 7" though, and WTS 05 comes up way short.

To put it succinctly, World Tour Soccer 2005 doesn't match the quality of a certain other soccer game named "Winning Eleven." Yet on its own, it's actually a solid game with no serious problems - but it's also nothing spectacular. [May 2004, p.102]

The biggest attraction to most fans will be the staggering collection of licensed clubs. For fans of unpronounceable teams from Arabic lands, there's no other solution.

A valiant try, but Sony's latest rendition of "the beautiful game" lacks the true gameplay depth and subtlety to challenge champions like "Winning Eleven 7" or "FIFA." [June 2004, p.29]
GameSpot
It's a pity, then, that World Tour Soccer 2005 plays such an ugly version of the beautiful game that it's unlikely you'll play it for long enough to see even half of what it offers.

Passes and shots occur long after you've pushed the appropriate button, which in turn severely handicaps your ability to score and shut down the opposition. [June 2004, p.96]

Whereas FIFA and WE make slow but sure progress with each successive year, the second-party Sony outfit have half-heartedly fiddled with a few aspects of the game instead of improving the general quality of it.

All commands are delayed by a second or two because of the stock animation that plays out. I found myself furiously tapping the controller as if the problem was a defective button that just wouldn't listen.
