Summary

(Curently available in the UK/EU only) If you're going to make a rally game, you should do it properly - and that means basing it meticulously on the real sport. As the only game to sport the official WRC licence, WRC3 brings the excitement of the 2003 season to PS2 - including this year's new event, held in Turkey. Evolution Studios, the game's developer, has managed to add yet more visual sheen to the action, making the rallying look increasingly realistic. New damage models allow the cars to react to the environment in a convincing fashion, with bodywork and glass being torn and smashed from the car if you fail to pay proper attention to your co-driver's advice. The higher attention to detail extends to car handling and even fully working in-car instrumentation, all helping to raise the level of immersion still further. [SCEE]

There are moments in WRC3 that remind you why games are great, simulators are dull and in another world where Burnout is crowned king and Gran Turismo the pretender, WRC3 would rule.

Not enough fun to be a top-notch arcade rally game like Shocks or Sega Rally, but it doesn't offer enough depth of tweaking to satisfy the hardcore rally game aficionado either.

WRC 3 is watered-down rally. Like a young, fresh-faced punk band, it's not worried about the technical stuff. It's the Sum 41 of rally games.

It's not enough fun to be a top-notch arcade rally game like Shocks or "Sega Rally," and at the same time it doesn't offer enough depth of tweaking to satisfy the hardcore rally game aficionado either, like "Colin McRae 4" does.

Edge Magazine

Although the physics engine has been tweaked to produce more convincing bumps, knocks and crashes there's still an artificiality about WRC3 that lets it down. Entertaining, but it's a full minute behind Colin. [Christmas 2003, p.123]

Peel away the layers and it's evident that it's not the best rally game out there by a wide margin.

Emre Y. gave it a9:
Well, first of all it's the first rally game I've ever played in PS2... But since I am an amateur enthusiast of advanced driving techniques, I think I can write a couple of words about the playability of the game... It is scaringly realistic... The responsiveness of the car and the graphics (of course, I play it in the cockpit) really make you feel the turns and the speed... and the controls are fairly comperable to real-life... I think the major flaw of any racing game is the missing feeling of oversteers or understeers... Naturally, you can't feel it from a simulation... However, you can at least sense it in the WRC3... The reason I cut a point, is some details... You can drive over fences or traffic signs but metal barriers seems to be made of the hardest metal on earth... and the co-pilot can be hardly heard if you don't turn on the volume of your TV to higher-than-usual levels... Moreover, his voice is so calm that you feel like he's some ordinary guy, just sitting by your side and enjoying the view... Well, in the replay you see that he really is; his mouth don't move at all, nor does he looks to his road notes... He's just looking at the direction you steer to... This is the only detail that steals from my joy of watching the replay of my best-time....

This is my favorite rally game! Much more fun than Colin McRae 04. The only bad thing about the game is the music, and the co-driver is a bit difficult to hear.

Tony B. gave it a 9:
Having invested in CM04, WRC differs no only because of the scenery which goes way back! but the handling on tarmac, snow, mud and everythng else inbetween. The technical adjustments are basic but the overall simulated experience of tearing around Turkey and ending up on the wrong side of a sheer drop would make any serious petrolhead beg for mercy. Yes, WRC£ gets my vote... looking forward to WRC4.

Daniel L. gave it a 5:
This is an game is excellent which makes the player feel as if he was the one behind the wheel. But there are also some down falls to the game it is only on the one console(ps2) and looking at the replays and seeing the driver steer make it look as if the replay was sped up.

Chris J. gave it a 10:
Very good, the damage has been improved from wrc 2 but could still be better, more could be done with the set up of the car.

Nick H. gave it a 9:
This is the best rally game available, colin mcrae physics are too hovercraftlike compared to this one. i have conquered colin4 in all levels, so i know. The physics are a giant leap from WRC2 and stages are more variable and include more detail than CMR4. The stages are made of real satellite data, they are parts of real stages, 8 inches/arc., the car spins around this time and its very hard to drive pedal to the medal. This game is very challenging even on the easiest level and if you dont have the patience to learn drive well so be aware, this is no arcadegame. i know cuz i have driven all the available rally games there is on PC and PS2, including V-rally3. This game has no fun in it cuz its far more harder than CMR4. The damage modelling could be better but it would make this game even more frustrating, if realistic. there is not many tweaking options like in WRC2 though, but this is because they want to keep the driving model challenging. Close up: this is hard game, but do you thing that driving a real rally car on the narrow roads is easy in real-life.....no. Minuses are music, but who drives rallycar with music...no-one and damage modelling should be like in CMR4, then this would be perfect 10. the graphics are the best i have seen in rallygames on PS2. go and try.
