Summary

[Also known as "World Rally Championship 4"] All the teams, cars, drivers, rallies and all the action from the global race where the world's finest compete to be crowned WRC champion. Exciting new game modes rub shoulders with old favourites, giving both existing WRC fans and those new to the sport and the game something really hot. Perhaps the highest temperatures will be caused by the thrilling new online modes for up to 16 players. Forget beating the clock; try taking on 15 opponents in a live, head-to-head race down a single-lane rally course. Even offline, WRC 4 continues to deliver excitement and exhilaration through the Pro Driver Challenge (drive your way through the key moments in a WRC driver's career), Super Special (two-lane, head-to-head rally stages), Point to Point and Sprint stages. Whatever route you choose, you'll have access to the official line-up of top class cars such as the Subaru Impreza WRC and the new Peugeot 307 WRC, in addition to cars from the Super 1600 class and Group N4. Boomtown

With extensive online modes, great handling and the best stages on any console rally game; you really can't go wrong with WRC4. Yes, at times it's a little tough and unforgiving, but don't worry, those AI drivers can retire too.

Games Radar UK (Pre-2006)

As you cut through, wet roads, snow, ice, gravel, mud, sand and water the controller responds with astonishing accuracy, dictating that steering and braking have to be incredibly precise. In essence, it appears while Colin McRae's latest is taking the handling back to a slightly less challenging level, WRC is doing the exact opposite. It's what Gran Turismo is to race driving, a pure rally simulation. [PSM2]

GameBiz

It lacks in the car setup, car repair and damage departments in comparison to "Colin McRae Rally 2005," but on the other hand, I know this will be seen as a good thing for those of you who prefer to jump into the action and not muck around with the minute details.

As a general rule of thumb, exhilaration requires a certain sensation of danger, and WRC 4 only just balances the cotton wool-wrapped feeling its damage model provides with its extra lick of speed.

WRC4's intolerance for casual or average drivers will have a lot of people moving on quickly. But it truly is an amazing package, offering so many modes, locations, and unlockable items that you simply won't find anywhere else.

Eurogamer

This is not for the faint-hearted, and although it leads the field in arguably every area in terms of PS2 Rally games, there are minimum entry requirements that even regular gamers will have issues coming to terms with. Danger! Hardcore racing ahead.

One of the most impressive aspects of the game is definitely the graphics engine. The visuals are crisp and clear and there is not much pop up to speak of.

PALGN

A little harder to pick up and play than other driving games out there. WRC 4 really is a fantastic package though, offering a lot of modes, unlockables and exclusives which you will not find in any other rally game.

Computer and Video Games

A highly polished product with enough attention to detail to make a rally fan drool, but the handling seems too complex for newcomers and too simple for aficionados. [PSW]

AceGamez

It's very good, there's no doubt about that, but the handling is just too loose and tricky to control for my liking and the amount of intense concentration required for every second of every race sapped a lot of the fun out for me.

The network mode plays the same as the offline alternative player racing. It doesn’t make too many demands on the connection speed, but it also doesn’t set the world alight with excitment either. If anything, it is a poor alternative to having a few friends around who can sit around heckling whoever is trying their best to concentrate on the road.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s lovingly made I just haven't much love to give it. It’s an acquired taste for the serious racers among us, and for them I do strongly recommend.

GameSpot AU

WRC4 does deliver a comprehensive challenge for those who are fans of the series and the genre. But details are where games make impact, and while this game covers all the tracks, cars and drivers, it misses out on moving forward in realistic game physics and environmental detail.

In the end, the logical questions the game poses get in the way of actually playing it, therefore further refinement is needed between now and the inevitable "WRC5."

Christopher S. gave it a10:
Not only the finest rally simulation on the market but also one of the finest racing games ever made. A truly magnificent product never released here in the states. I had to import it and buy Magic3 plus boot discs to play it. It was worth the trouble and expense.

Paul S. gave it a4:
The gameplay? Spectacular! The look? Fantastic! The Autosave? Put it in the bin? Whats wrong with would you like to save now? You turn it off and it's back when you turn the game back on. Once it's saved what you didn't want it too you start again. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Jon J. gave it a7:
Great graphics! Great sound! But why does it have to be so difficult? I've been playing for 2 weeks now, and have only managed a 5th place once! Maybe it's me? No! This game is one of the most difficult games to master!

Roger K. gave it a10:
The best rally game out.

Curious George gave it a 10:
Reviewer "Nick Powell" of TotalGames.net claims "Colin McRae 2005 is pretty //arcadey; WRC 4 is even //arcadier". This is in spite of WRC 4 having a full simulation model and CM5 being a pure arcade game. Question: Do you need to have any knowledge at all about your subject to review a game online, or is blind ignorance the order of the day?

Pete W. gave it a 10:
Just amazing.

Martin gave it a 10:
Where gt stops this game begins.. amazing!
