Summary
[Playstation Network] With fast paced action, crushing hits and loads of room to experiment, 3 on 3 NHL Arcade promises to have gamers from all walks of life excited about hockey. With no rules to hinder the action, deliver devastating checks that send your opponent over the boards and watch as he has to skate back onto the ice. If the goalie comes out of his crease to play the puck, check him. Exaggerated player-looks take center stage with 40 of the top NHL stars, representing every team, skating around the miniature rink. With game-changing power-ups falling on the ice throughout each session, serious is not the name of this game. Fly down the ice with a super-speed skater, and beat a giant sprawling goalie with a trick move for that highlight reel finish. With two control schemes to choose from, players can pick between button controls that allow gamers of all skill levels to pass, shoot, hit and break out the all-new trick moves with ease, or the more advanced Skill Stick controls from NHL 09. 3 on 3 NHL Arcade also brings the online experience players have come to expect from EA SPORTS. In addition to standard ranked matches, 3 on 3 NHL Arcade allows the ability for three players on one console to play three other players on another console anywhere in the world. [Electronic Arts]

As fun and fast as it should be. [Aug 2009]
Da Gameboyz
Overall, 3 on 3 NHL Arcade for the PlayStation Network is a perfect game for those looking for a casual, simple, quirky and enjoyable hockey game for a fraction of the cost of a regular priced EA Sports title.

Even with the issues, 3 on 3 NHL Arcade's a must-play for fans of arcade sports, and I want to commend the makers for mercifully extracting the pointless bloat of pre-game intros and a circling zamboni between periods.

There is no doubt that 3 on 3 NHL Arcade is missing some key features like a Season or Tournament mode, it needed something. Lucky for the guys and gals over at EA, 3 on 3 NHL Arcade works from top to bottom giving a really great arcade hockey experience.

3 on 3 NHL Arcade doesn’t have a comprehensive slate of gameplay modes and options, and it’s easy to write it off for that reason. But what’s there is enough to keep gamers coming back again and again: tremendously enjoyable core gameplay, superb sound design, impressive visuals, and a wonderfully old-school-oriented multiplayer experience.

A great sports game. [Apr 2009, p.104]
WonderwallWeb
3 on 3 NHL Arcade is a fun and addictive action packed game, it also looks very well polished, with bobbleheaded hockey players flying up and down the ice in a manic fashion.

Minimal load times, fast-paced on-the-ice action and a steady array of power-ups make for a game that plays well, controls well and has only a slight learning curve. What hurts the game is the lack of game options - there are really only three ways to play it and two are online.

Hardcore hockey fans might find NHL Arcade too simple, with its lack of official teams, arenas or any kind of tournament mode. However, it's loads of fun against friends, online or off.

Despite being quite shallow, internally as well as on the surface, this downloadable title still has some depth to it. Sure, there are few rules, modes and teams offered here, but the most important ingredient is in place. If you're in the mood for a fast paced arcade hockey experience there is tons of fun to be had here. It's not a game you'll be setting up tournaments in, but if you like some easy going hockey fun there are fun games to rival this one.

The gameplay is solid and the online mode works fairly well, but a severe lack of features really dampens the experience for those expecting more from EA’s latest.

3 on 3 NHL Arcade is a fun little hockey tackle game for 2+ persons. Playing solo gets a bit boring after a short while, but with a bunch of friends, in your living room or online, 3 on 3 offers a great deal of entertainment and competition. On the downside the settings have to be configured every time and aren't saved for future sessions, and the music and menu sounds are annoying.

This does lack the longevity that other PlayStation Network games have and it's likely to be pretty forgettable. [Issue#88, p.89]
GameFocus
3 on 3 NHL Arcade is a game that should not be a 10 dollar purchase, rather a bonus mode available in the regular NHL release. If EA plans on releasing a similar game in the future, it would be better suited to either bring back the under-appreciated NHL Rock the Rink from the original PlayStation or putting in some sort of ladder option or tournament mode similar to arcade sports titles from the 90s.

The over-the-top gameplay is a good fit, but it is a bit unimaginative. Shrinking goalies and massive body checks aren't exactly stretching the boundaries for an arcade game.
This is basically a cheap knockoff of a Wii game. It could have easily been included in EA's NHL 09 game as the “pond hockey” mini-game. That way NHL 09 would have the casual fan and hardcore fan base covered.

Think of it as the cheap seats at a game. If you know what you are getting into and have plenty of friends who wanna throw down with you online, then yes, the game does play a fun addictive game of arcade NHL action. If you are looking for a single player experience or will only play online sporadically, then the answer is an emphatic no.

3 on 3 NHL Arcade doesn't offer you enough to call itself a complete game. EA should add this game to a real NHL game, so you can spend your money on better titles.
NHL Arcade falls short in too many areas to be highly recommended. Unless you're a diehard hockey fanatic you can pass up this title. It's a shame too, we needed a good hockey arcade title for PSN/XBLA, but we haven't gotten it yet.
