Summary
In AFRIKA, players step into the role of a freelance photographer exploring a brand new conservation area. They'll document the wildlife and photograph incredible sights such as a titanic clash between hippopotamuses, a pride of lions watching over its playful cubs, and a cheetah's lightning-fast chase as it runs down its prey! All of the game's animals and environments are rendered in photorealistic detail with animals that move, behave, and interact with each other just like their real-world counterparts. The photography in the game is as meticulously modeled as the animals themselves; players will need to learn from the game's innovative photo-grading system and compose their photographs with the eye of a professional photographer if they want to earn top dollar. The money they earn can be used to purchase new licensed lenses, cameras, and safari equipment. If players are good enough, they just might find their photograph on the cover of National Geographic. If you like the setting, then you will not be disappointed by Afrika. Relaxing as it is, we could watch the savannah‘s inhabitants for hours, so Afrika scores extra points for its atmosphere.

Worth a look for something unique but hippo-watching slower missions can frustrate. [Feb 2009, p.79]

Hakuna Matata is a unique title and as such will no doubt attract a cult following. There is a lot to offer those who can find the required time and patience required to gain the best from it.

An intriguing game, dedicated to nature lovers and photographer would-be. Unfortunately, some graphical issues spoil the atmosphere.

Afrika is one of the most pleasant, enjoyable and gently engrossing games I've played in a while. It's a shame Sony isn't releasing it here, and it's worth importing. [JPN Import]

If you like it quiet, Afrika's peacefulness and sense of freedom offer something to savour.[JPN Import; Nov 2008, p.116]

Approached with acceptance of its limitations and a willingness to cede true freedom, Afrika can still be a remarkable, memorable experience. [Dec 2008, p.121]

It's beautiful and soothing. [Nov 2009, p.76]

Originally, the biggest problem I had with Afrika was that there wasn't more of a narrative. I like having the freedom to explore beautiful virtual worlds, but I also appreciate some story to bring it together. But as the game progressed, I felt that maybe a game like this doesn't need a bunch of drama attached -- a picture is worth a thousand words.

It's not the visual jaw-dropper that was promised but a virtual safari is better than none.

For $49.99, it’s a definite pass; maybe when it drops down to budget price all you nature fans might give it a try. Just don’t expect much…at least it’s cheaper than a real safari.

Afrika is a mess. It's not a broken game, but it definitely isn't a fully functioning one. It's limited in its scope, it doesn't look good, it's not fun to play, and I could go on. This one is a miss that America probably could've done without.

Ed V gave it a9:
I love to see game developers that step out of the box. To defy the tidal wave of cookie cutter games. It’s not a fighter; racer, action/adventure or role playing… it’s an “other”. And they did a fantastic job! I stand up and applaud their creativity and willingness to be different. The creatures look and act like real animals. It’s challenging, relaxing and a lot of fun!
Lars H gave it a9:
It's a relaxing game that is very different from all my other games this gen. My wife loves exploring and finding new animals. It's a lot of fun to experience Afrika with her. That's not something I can do with many other games.
scott a gave it an8:
so peaceful and relaxing, ign and the othes who complain about it being broken are rong, this 'games' fine as it is, more ground detail would have been nice but all in all its about the critters, no guns no blood now war, perfect to wind down and relax, animal modeling is well done and the camera work is good all in all buy it if you want something different
Dan R gave it an8:
To those of you that claim this is not a game... you're right. Afrika is an experience. No run- and- gun, no hack- and -slash, no quick time events, just the "chaacter fulfillment" of being a nature photographer. Ambient and serene, with moments of extreme intensity, this game should be appriciated for both what it is and isn't. Anyone tired of the same ol', same ol' in their video games should give Afrika a try
Ryan W gave it an8:
It's no call of duty but thats the point. It is however a nice change of pace. While the game does spend way to much time loading its worth the wait. Overall I love when developers step outside the box.
JOHN S gave it an8:
I heard that its free roam and i was wondering if you could drive and hit some wildlife. AND are there any hunters.
Lauren C gave it a9:
The game started off limited, full of faults, and rather lame, and then, as if by magic, suddenly sprang into a full-fledged game. The lack of voice acting bothers me a bit, but this game was everything I hoped it would be. If you don't go in with really high expectations, you'll find yourself having a lot of fun.
