Summary

Taking inspiration from the presentation style and structure of a number of acclaimed and globally popular TV action dramas, Alone in the Dark: Inferno is split into a number of distinct episodes in a season-style format. With approximately 30-40 minutes of gameplay comprising each episode, the structure of Alone in the Dark is adapted for an audience familiar with the hard-hitting bite-size delivery of contemporary TV dramas, offering easy accessibility whether the player has hours to devote or only wants a quick TV-style fix. Each time the player launches a saved game, the episode begins with a video summary of the previous episode to quickly re-immerse the player in the story, removing the need to remember where they were or what they were doing. Every episode closes with a nail-biting cliff-hanger ending to rattle players' nerves, and if the player is leaving the game a video teaser of the next episode plays to leave them wanting more. Alone in the Dark returns with a heart-stopping survival experience realized through the use of state-of-the-art real-time physics and unprecedented environmental interaction. Delivering an action-orientated experience within a highly detailed, open environment, Alone in the Dark once again strives innovation and excellence within the genre. [Atari]

It's impossible to know for sure, but I can only imagine that if the initial version had been as finely-honed as Inferno, it would have received a much warmer welcome. Instead, thanks to all the negative word-of-mouth generated by the inferior 360 version, Inferno came and went with hardly anyone blinking an eye.

After releasing the Xbox 360 and PC versions with some major problems, Eden Games show us that they got the necessary humility to admit and correct those failures. Now, in Alone in the Dark Inferno, they are really offering the definitive experience in an appealing game directed not only for those who have patience enough do surface all the errors, but for all the fans.

A great addition to the series that shies away from the mindless killing-fest of other horror games on the market today, yet stays true to the atmospheric horror adventure of its roots. Great to play in the dark – if you dare.

Worth Playing

Inferno is well worth checking out, and even picking up, and it's something that I hope people are willing to go back to if they were left frustrated by the 360 version of the game.

Inferno is closer to the Alone in the Dark that should have been. Atari fixed some crucial flaws and improved other aspects, and yet the game still feels slightly rough.

If you’re an Alone in the Dark fan and you have the two consoles, the PS3 is definitely worth picking up. But we strongly think that the game remains a good rental since once you’re done with the game, the interest to replay it again won’t be present. But please, pick up the PS3 version.

PSX Extreme

Everything still feels too loose; the platforming and vehicle use is entertaining but still a little unstable, the idea of striking with the right analog stick is silly, the sound effects and voice acting don’t always deliver, and the storyline isn’t quite as engaging as we would’ve hoped.

The fixes and changes have dragged Alone In The Dark from being a god-awful game to an okay one. It can’t compete with the likes of Dead Space, but it can cosy up with other mediocrity such as Siren: Blood Curse.

It's definitely clever and fun, though, and Inferno's raft of improvements is enough to finally make Alone worth your attention. [Holiday 2008, p.81]

Meristation

While its bugs and some other annoyances from the other versions have been successfully corrected, the whole package is still a bit lacking. Some control and technical problem are the main obstacles that this game find to really shine, a shame because it´s filled with good ideas and has a great presentation.

More often than not though, Eden succeeds, and once you get to grips with creating Molotov cocktails, shooting bottles in mid-air, and using aerosol cans as makeshift flamethrowers, it hardly seems to matter that shooting itself is so ineffective.

Even the "fixed" PS3 version can't atone for the game's flaws. [Christmas 2008, p.86]

PS3bloggen.se

The Inferno version of Alone in the Dark deserves a good grade not only because of the additions, but also because the weak parts from the previous version have been improved. Outstanding innovations include the jacket inventory, mediaplayer-like save feature, weapon-combos from household goods and smooth transitions between cutscenes. Some polishing is still in order, with intermittent bugs and badly constructed faces, but overall this is a good effort by Atari.

Gamervision

While there’s no doubt that Inferno is, indeed, the definitive version of the game, it’s still not good enough. It’s short of its own potential, it’s frustrating to play, and while the fixes make it a better game, it doesn’t enhance the flawed experience.

Inferno for the PS3 might have fixed a few of the problems that plagued the Xbox 360 release of Alone in the Dark but, sadly, it’s not enough to make this a completely better version of the game.

Alone in the Dark: Inferno is a cleaner version of the average horror game Alone in the Dark. It's a shame that the faults of the original are still partly in tact. It's more fun to play through, but for the second time the hype isn't justified.

A lesson in good intentions gone awry. Nearly all of its novel ideas misfire. What's so interesting about Inferno is the mentality that a patch was all that was needed to make a better game. The original was defined by a lackluster story, awkward controls, and merely okay gameplay – that's not a formula that needs a few tweaks, it's one that should be scrapped entirely.

David A. gave it an8:
To be perfectly honest, Inferno is actuallly a great game. The only problems i had were the controls, which i didnt mind and the graphics could have been better and also vehicle control which felt a little akward, but wasnt a huge thing. Other than that, Inferno has some memorable moments and a story which grips you from the start. Well worth a look, if not a purchase.

Bryan M gave it a10:
Alone in the Dark is so innovative and visually impressive... It may have it's flaws and it may not be for everybody, but it's an excellent game and too many people out there are giving it way too low of a score. I know it doesn't warrant a 10, but the average needs to come up because there are too many unskilled and biased noobs out there who barely know how to use a controller and rate this game a 0. Alone in the Dark is epic and a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Chris M. gave it a3:
They can re-name this game as much as they want it is still rubbish. 3 out of 10.

Czar gave it an8:
I downloaded the demo yesterday (and I used to own the 360 copy, too). And I have to say that it feel pretty good now. The controls are tight and the camera makes sense now, too. I'd give it another go this way, no doubt about it.

Curt B. gave it a6:
This game had it's moments. The story was well thought out and the graphics (esp. lighting) are incredible. It also has some original ideas (like the inventory screen and combing items in a new way). The controls on the other hand are terrible. Driving is near impossible and the rest of the game is a chore to get through.
