The first game in the Assassin's Creed franchise is set in 1191 AD, when the Third Crusade was tearing the Holy Land apart. Shrouded in secrecy and feared for their ruthlessness, the Assassins intend to stop the hostilities by suppressing both sides of the conflict. Players, assuming the role of the main character Altair, have the power to throw their immediate environment into chaos and to shape events during this pivotal moment in history. [Ubisoft]

It's hard to put the sheer size and brilliance of Assassin's Creed into words. It is an epic game that you have to experience for yourself. I will caution that the game is not for the impatient or the faint of heart.

Its stunning visual style, high concept story, and wildly open level design are like nothing else, even if too much repetition begins to frustrate in the later hours. It’s a game people will still be talking about five years from now.

It almost seems as if the humungous world they created and the idea that lies beneath the premise was too big to embrace; it was simply beyond current development possibilities. On the other hand, Ubisoft Montreal did come close, which means we end up with a great game.

The first half of Assassin’s Creed is a truly clairvoyant experience. You’ve never played anything like it. The sagacious story, incalculable crowd interaction, and unprecedented freedom to traverse the environment how you choose are landmark moments. Over time, repetition rears its ugly head, combat becomes a necessary routine, and dimwitted foes snatch you out of the third crusade and remind you that you’re playing a game.

Assassin's Creed is a solid enough game to overcome its awkward plot device. It doesn't much matter why you're in the situation you're in. What matters are those wonderful moments when you're sitting on a tower overlooking one of the most gorgeous cities you've ever seen in a game, and you know it's all yours to play in.

A must-buy title for gamers interested in following an excellent story. The wonderful visuals play a major role in the experience and easy controls and open level design will suck you right in. This is not a game for everyone and misses a perfect rating due to pacing issues.

It has all the ambitions and potential worthy of a true next-gen title, from its visuals to the freedom it offers to the player, although it falls victim of its own limitations. But this title still has the flavour of something quite innovative. [Dec 2007]

Worth Playing
Despite Assassin's Creed's smooth, almost deft controls and not infrequently gorgeous, gritty ancient urban settings, it is ultimately a game by rote, not salvaged by a compelling story and also burdened with a shell plot that is both trite and superfluous.

Despite its shortcomings, Assassin's Creed is still enjoyable simply because of the breathtaking playground you're let loose in. In terms of sheer visual spectacle, the size and beauty of the world alone sets a new benchmark, showing what developers can really achieve with next generation visuals. [Christmas 2007, p.92]

The in-game combat isn't bad either, if you can accept two things—there's not enough variety to the combat, and the extra effot to sneak around often isn't worth it. The guards can be real idiots, too. Past that, this Assassin cuts deep.

Don't get me started on the ending. This pretty much nailed the coffin shut on the game's fate as a good but not stunning title. You'll have to experience it for yourself, but it simply didn't deliver what it should have. It left me wanting more, which Ubisoft may well see as job done, but gamers don't buy games with the hope that they're completed within the next few years; they want a conclusion straight away.

If you play Assassin's Creed for an hour, you will probably think it's a fantastic game. But as Assassin's progresses, its dual storylines and repetitive quests begin to grow tiresome. There are so many great individual elements, but they are lost among the myriad of poor decisions from Ubisoft Montreal.

Instead of a true stealth engine, you have awkward "hide spots" to accommodate the free roaming. Combat is either too easy or too hard, lacking the brilliance of a dedicated action title. And the free-roaming, bound as it is to mission objectives that would be fine in a more linear game, is just unsatisfying. Each element of the game is individually interesting, but as a whole the package feels incomplete and patchwork more than innovative.

It attempts a lot of ambitious things and it almost succeeds at every one. But it's apparent that these grandiose ideas may have been a little too much to master the first go-round. But hey, at least the groundwork is laid for a killer sequel -- right, Ubisoft?

Great game, cool graphics, I like the fighting while using short blade and hidden blade, nice storyline, This game never gets boring I have replayed it 7 times.

[Anonymous] gave it an8:
This game is undeniably brilliant graphically and in gameplay. Although some of the missions can seem similar and rather easy, you get heavily involved in the unique story and freedom of exploring the cities. Unfortunately, it is only a 'play once' game. It would have been better if the game ended in a way that allowed you to play on similar to games like 'grand theft auto'. However, there are other incentives such as collecting flags and things that can keep you occupied. The makers of the game should have made it a bit more realistic in some situations and improving the AI which was a bit annoying. Overall, a game worth buying for its unique nature and addictive gameplay.

Leon L. gave it a6:
I'm kind of disappointed of the game. Graphic is excellent but it is the same throughout the game. I just walk through the cities and perform the same mission over and over again. There isn't much action happening and I'm getting bored after the 3rd memory. There is no subtitle of the video chip (unlike Uncharted, and Ratchet and Clank).

[Anonymous] gave it a0:
I'll balance out the hype with a fat 0/10. Many lament over the repetition of the missions—how every single one is the same regurgitated, copy-pasted monotony—and how there's no unique or customizable formula for progressing through the game. Others complain about the annoyingly cheesy music that ruins important parts of the game and makes the fighting seem even more lame. But I say that even if they fixed all that—which, don't get me wrong, are annoying in a way that only Ubisoft can invent—there's no way to excuse some of the most horrific AI I have ever seen in a game. Ten guys will stand around waiting for you to finish your 4-minute joust with one bloke. They look like retarded gofers the way they just stand around. At any given point, your enemy could have innumerous chances to kill you (several times over), but they'd rather waste that time deciding which of the three scripted fight sequences to showcase. Try seeing that happen in Half-Life 2. Your interrogation targets speak to crowds in a 15 second loop of dialog until you target them. They then walk short, ridiculously-obvious scripted pathways to some lone alley and practically beg for someone to beat them senseless for information. If you don't do anything, they walk the scripted path back to their soapbox and continue to spout their two whole sentences of repetitive non-sense. When games like Oblivion showcase AI that live intelligently, unscripted, and natural whether you’re there or not, there should be no excuse for amateur AI ever again, not from a professional company; there should be no backtracking on technology and innovation. The bar is never magically lowered back to decades-old gimmicks. If you walk, you're a saint. If you climb, you must be killed. If you run, you're suspicious, but if you instantly fold your hands and stop running, all is well. That same guard who was so angry at your hastiness mere seconds ago is now pleased by the warm summer breeze bringing relief to his long and scripted day. If you do all of the above all at once in front of any given guard, you will always get the same prescripted reactions every time. And if you end up getting in trouble from all this, guess what: you get 3 prescripted locations to hide. A tent, a bench, or a haystack. And if you're lucky you'll find a group of white robe-clad scholars who are still brave enough not to run while the guards chase you (the guards don’t notice that you’re the one with the white robes AND the myriad of weaponry and leather armor, so you blend right in with these “scholars”). In the Thief series I could hide wherever the hell I wanted to as long as I was still, quiet, and in the shadows; I could be innovative, I could be a hunter. I could make the game my own. This game has no business pretending to be part of that genre.

Bryan S. gave it a9:
Unique story, great animations, and fun gameplay = Great game! Missions can get repetitive, but it doesn't make the game suffer that much, since you aren't forced to complete all of them if you choose not to.

The Mule gave it a5:
It's half a game. One level of design copy-pasted multiple times. Moronic gameplay, combat, moronic enemy AI, poor story, character developement, and surpisingly non-existent ending deserving of such a scam. One painful example of what "hype" can do (and some major videogame websites paid to write forgiving reviews and give good scores. STAY AWAY.

[Anonymous] gave it a10:
This game is just plain fun. It was the first i ever got for the PS3 and I'm still playing it. Gameplay is great. Storyline is awesome except it has the biggest cliffhanger I have ever seen.
