Summary
An unflinching realisation of a Clive Barker nightmare for next-gen console platforms and PC, Clive Barker's Jericho is a supernatural horror concept with story by the master mythmaker, novelist and filmmaker Clive Barker. Jericho deals with the mysterious reappearance of a lost city in a remote desert. When a form of evil that goes right back to the dawn of days resurfaces from there, a Special Forces squad, trained in both conventional warfare and the arcane arts, is sent in. Their mission: Hunt down and destroy the evil that lurks at the heart of the city before it destroys humanity. Jericho is designed as an action horror title that ups the stakes in visuals and phantasmagorical special effects. Mingling the darkest elements of Barker’s horror fiction and films with an ambitious, age-spanning story, aimed at mature gamers, fans of Clive Barker and horror fiction enthusiasts. [Codemasters]

The worst ending to a videogame ever and a mediocre start aren't enough to ruin one of the better shooters to emerge in years. Barker's influence is something that elevates Jericho, despite its problems, above many other FPSs. A gory treat. [Issue#159, p.80]
GameTap
Unlike many squad-based shooters that don't require the use of the whole team, Jericho's premise relies on it. What's equally important is that each character is genuinely worth playing.

I would've enjoyed more variety in the enemy fodder, but what's available is certainly creepy and intense. Clive Barker should develop more games. [Nov 2007, p.65]
Playstation: The Official Magazine (US)
Jericho is pure Clive Barker, and that means that it's not for everyone, especially young children or people with weak stomachs. [Holiday 2007, p.85]
GameZone
The FPS elements are stock and the levels have a feeling of guiding you through the game because the maze of ruins you encounter will only allow you to go in one continuous direction. Still, the controls are easy to learn and the game does have its share of heart-start moments.

Jericho is definitely a case of inventive design married all-too-unhappily to old school thinking, and the result is a game that is almost fatally broken.

Jericho is not a bad game it’s just one that lost its way slightly during development. The ability to jump into other team members bodies and harness their powers is a good idea let down slightly by poor implementation and a claustrophobic level design.

Jericho isn't a groundbreaking shooter, but what it does, it does really well. Sadly, there's no online content here, just a slew of production art to unlock by completing skill tests in the game - making for a sound FPS that will have horror geeks gagging for more and shooter fans reaching for the sick bag. [Nov 2007, p.92]
GamerNode
A solid shooter marred by poor design. Good visuals and some fine FPS gameplay are to be had in Jericho, but I wouldn't pay full price for it,. If you can, get the 360 or PC version.

A handful of original ideas lost in a thick mist of generic design, and lame scares. Oh, well. [Dec 2007, p.70]
Extreme Gamer
Jericho is clever enough for a good time with a FPS, however as anything else Jericho should trade in this blood gushing festival of carnage for jelly donuts.

Full of gore and ideas, but ultimately it fails to deliver on its initial promise. [Dec 2007, p.80]
Game Chronicles
Clive Barker's Jericho fails to be compelling enough to escape the bonds of mediocrity.

On one hand it's a near-broken video game, packed full of so many gaming no-nos that it ought never to be spoken about again, but on the other it's original, atmospheric and sickeningly good fun.

Jericho had a lot of potential, and in some ways, like jumping back and forth between squad members it actually does something different. Sadly, all of the game's set-up and backstory are essentially squandered on an over-reliance on the same constantly spawning enemies and too-obvious puzzles.

Jericho doesn't really bring anything new to the gaming world.

While boasting some uninspiring mechanics for a first person shooter, the biggest area that Jericho falls down on is its inability to produce a sense of atmosphere and suspense throughout its levels and, in a horror game, that's critical.

Clive Barker's Jericho might be the most boring and linear shooter ever. The idea of switching between characters is nice, but it is wasted on dull monster design. Also, the guns are the most underpowered peashooters ever. A huge disappointment, since the idea sounded quite interesting. [Oct 2007]
Game Informer
If broken gameplay mechanics and community college acting didn’t weigh down the game, it might actually be worthwhile.
Jericho is way too ambitious and it hurts on every side. While not broken, it’s poorly designed and dull, from spawning enemies making the tactical play irrelevant, to a horror story that, despite its charm and intricacies, just isn’t scary. Jericho may be art, but not all art is good.

Clive Barker's Jericho does a few things well and a lot of things poorly. In no way can it compare to the other awesome FPSs available now (Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, for example), and when you spend more time healing than fighting, there's something seriously wrong.
Instead of getting caught up in the struggle against a demonic force that threatens the continued existence of your race, you're left with tacked-on squad elements, poor friendly and enemy AI, repetitive encounters, and unabashedly linear levels. Jericho has a few memorable moments, but they're not worth the cash.
The sheer number of things that had to go wrong to keep Clive Barker’s Jericho from being a raging success is almost unbelievable, because when it comes right down to it, this game had the makings of a real hit. The fact that the credits roll at the exact same moment you finally find yourself on the edge of your seat cements the overall feeling of incompleteness the game gives off from the beginning.

Jericho lacks any real defining features - it's just a mass of clichés, tried and true genre elements and technical issues.

All of the pieces were there to make a successful and compelling first-person shooter but somewhere along the line it fell apart.
Read Full Review >Playstation Official Magazine UK
The short answer to the question, "Why isn't Jericho a fun game to play?" is that the AI is broken and the hackneyed horror stylings would barely have raised an eyebrow back in Barker's '80s heyday. [Dec 2007, p.104]
AceGamez
Clive Barker's Jericho is as run of the mill as you'll find in a next-gen game.

It’s important to stress that Clive Barker’s Jericho is really not a bad game. It’s just nowhere near as good as the top shooters that surround it. [Dec 2007, p.124]
Game Revolution
Given how much repetition is in the game, one would think it was much longer than its six to eight hour length. The lack of any kind of multiplayer hurts it further. And the final stake to the heart is the appallingly abrupt and inconclusive ending.
Shamefully when Jericho is finished there are no other modes to speak of. This is very disappointing as an online or co-operative mode would have been interesting with the occult backdrop and powers.
The action and violence are satisfying enough to make the game marginally recommendable, but only barely. Add in the complete lack of any multiplayer options, a terrible ending, and Clive Barker’s Jericho feels like a game where the good parts are overwhelmed by the shortcomings.
Read Full Review >Electronic Gaming Monthly
Jericho is a mess of a shooter with nonexistant A.I., frustrating timed events, vague puzzles, and PS1-style load times. [Dec 2007, p.107]
1UP
The thread holding Jericho above that pit of legendary awfulness is thin and fraying. Mr. Barker, you're better than this.

Sean K gave it a7:
Apart from being thrown from recent times then back to the 16th century and so on this is an excellent game that has been way underated.... the idea of being able to change characters and all having different weapons and powers is brilliant. The storyline is great along with good visuals and good gameplay (once you get used to the characters). The only real let down for me was the ending which i expected more of a cinematic closure which instead i thought was awfully executed and rushed, this is why i have only given the game a 7 instead of an 8.... If your a fps fan then this is definately a good buy (£17.99!!!) and for those who are fans of the survival horror games or even fans of horror films this is a must.
Tim S gave it a9:
This game was better than the reviews would lead you to believe. If you believe the reviews you would think that your squad was impossible to control and you spend all of your time running around and reviving them. I just completed this game and had none of these issues. Each character has their own type of play-style and this kept the gameplay refreshing. Voice acting was well done and the story was decent. The only reason I didn't give it a 10 was due to the linear level design and lack of variety in opponents.
Kent C. gave it an8:
Better than I thought. When I looked at the scores it was getting, I thought it would be a crap game. I rented it and loved it. It's bloody, intense, and very fast paced. The graphics are great and voice acting is pretty good too. If you don't mind some cheesy lines, the script and story is pretty entertaining. The bad guys are disturbing and fierce. Probably the best thing about the game is the supernatural powers that each teammate has. They are varied and creative, but some are more useful than others. Some characters are more useful than others, and you'll most likely be using your 2-3 favorites throughout the game. (Some have cheap weapons and powers, like Church and Delgado that make the game a little easier). Overall, this game is the ultimate rental, but I wouldn't suggest buying it because it's pretty short.
Bryce V. gave it a9:
It Is Really fun game, and i think it has a better story line than Halo 3. But the game would of been better if you could fight with or friends or just kill them. but if you like first person shooter games or like boold and gore than you should get this game. It is fun and awsome.
Arthur N. gave it a9:
It's not as bad as what Critics said. Set the difficulty to EASY and apply the 3 cheat codes (1st free cheat code can be obtained simply by registering), and you won't find yourself dying so easily. And then you get to truly appreciate the original idea of posessing the bodies and abilities of your NPCs. Let the fun begins.
Jesse C. gave it a7:
Solid game play with stunnig graphics and an intriguing story keep this game outa the dumpster for me. All the rest of the issue are here but the pro totally out weight the cons.
James S. gave it an8:
Actually, I hate FPS. it may be the first FPS I have finished in all my life. Why ? Because beside all gameplay or glitch or weirdo ending problemes, this game still smell artistic in my mind, Clive barker univers is everywhere. And the sound, oh my god, rarely heard better sound and music since silent hill 2.
