Pelit (Finland)

Conan is at its best visceral and furious fun with limbs and heads flying. Unfortunately, the adrenaline level drops when the speed slows down on harder adversaries and when the enemies do not have limbs to detach or heads to pop. Also, boss fights tend to follow the same pattern too much. Still, it is worth the time and effort. Experimenting with different moves never gets old. [Oct 2007]

Game Over Online

All said, Conan the game, like the titular barbarian himself, is very one dimensional. It’s great for getting in a little much needed smashing time, and maybe for checking out some computer generated boobage, but after a run through or three of the story mode it’s pretty much spent.

Fans of Conan will appreciate this game as much as hack-and-slash fans who've never heard of the franchise. It's a lot of fun, challenging without being frustrating and all in all, a great example of its genre.

Game Chronicles

If you're into the character Conan or the action/adventure "hack and slash" style genre then you owe it to yourself to spend an evening or two with this game. Sometimes the guilty pleasures in life are the best kind.

Still, you're Conan, doing what Conan does(well, almost--unlike Kratos, the Conan in this game is pretty chaste overall), and that's always a good time. [Dec 2007, p.86]

Play Magazine

It looks good but not great, feels good but not great, has some very cool moments before running into duller moments right around the corner. [Nov 2007, p.60]

Derivative as it is, Conan is still a viscerally satisfying adventure.

Gamer 2.0

For what its worth, Conan is a rather intense and short game. Fighting through all the hordes and spending time backtracking only amounted to about seven hours of gameplay, and with no multiplayer or secrets to unlock, that’s quite a disappointment in terms of replay.

PSX Extreme

Much of our play time was spent grinning in devilish glee at the absurd action that liberally splashed the screen with severe amounts of gore. Given this, we'd love to recommend the game, but the entire adventure will only last about 5-7 hours.

Conan's lack of original ideas and last-gen gameplay, clips the wings of an otherwise thoroughly entertaining action/fantasy romp. [Issue#160, p.95]

Maxi Consolas (Portugal)

It’s a more Schwarzenneger version of the barbarian than the one from the comics. It tries to make the most of its influences (especially God of War) in the form of a competent game for all Conan fans out there. [Nov 2007]

Digital Entertainment News

Barely more than a clone of God of War, Conan manages to differentiate itself with an over-the-top style and mature themes. The action has its ticks, but a hardcore action aficionado will find a lot to like here.

Look past the slightly plain graphics, which are adequate but never breathtaking, and the dodgy (but tonque-in-cheek) script and you'll find a solid game that's endlessly rewarding, packed with variety and actually far better than we ever expected.

You could realistically finish it in a weekend making it more of a rental option than shelling out full price. However, if you are a fan of the lore (minus the ridiculous use of magic mind you) and you love the hack and slash genre then this game could easily be worth checking out.

The gameplay is very familiar and the only major hold up is the lack of camera control. It makes the journey a bit more frustrating at times.

Despite being somewhat derivative and rough around the edges, Conan has an enjoyable combat system and brings in enough variety to keep the action from feeling too repetitive. Players that aren’t turned off by the gore, nudity, or disregard for canon should have plenty of fun dismembering the scum of Hyboria.

Conan the character is brutal, honest and straight to the point, and so is Nihilistic’s version of Conan the game. Even though there isn’t much past the combat, Conan is still a lot of fun if you’re into mythological lore, saving naked woman, and getting vicious in battle.

On the one hand it's highly entertaining and almost obscenely violent and crude, but for a next-gen title with a next-gen price tag it doesn't quite deliver.

AceGamez

A balls to the wall action game with little need for subtlety. This is big, brash and dumb as a bag of hammers, a relentlessly violent, uncompromising adventure that's fun from start to finish with a combat system that packs a visual punch as well as a technical one.

Official Playstation 2 Magazine UK

The frustrating thing is that these faults don't seem to be the result of poor design or sloppy development, but stem rather from a lack of ambition to turn what is a steady game into something that could have been spectacular. [Dec 2007, p.106]

GameSpy

The game doesn't quite measure up to God of War, but it will satisfy that itch for carnage.

Sure, it has annoying glitches, the cheap artificial intelligence will piss you off and Sony's God of War plays ten times better, but you don't play Conan for enlightenment or for a lesson in quality game design. You play because you enjoy the thrill of the hunt, and because sometimes, it feels good to rip a fake person's arms off.

The graphics, the combat, the design, the sound are all just okay. With a final boss battle that is as painful as a trip to the proctologist, Conan is a game best rented for a one-day lark. It's certainly not worth spending $60 on.

From the very first level, the God of War copying is all too apparent; in fact, the setup of the first scene mirrors the first scene in God of War II to a T!

Game Revolution

For the things that Conan gets right - big breasted naked lasses, blood and guts - it gets two things wrong - the use of magic, the god-awful voice acting. Otherwise, this is just another entry in the burgeoning God of War genre, neither offering anything in the way of innovation nor testing the limits of next-gen graphics.

Put simply, the story's not very good, it's short, and it just has too many small flaws to match Sony's game. [Dec 2007, p.104]

1UP

Conan isn't really a horrible game. There are moments when all the flaws fade away and you'll experience a great animation that slows down at just the right times and chops off just the right heads and you'll start to think that the game is actually pretty fun, but it's all extremely straightforward and lacking a lot of polish.

David G. gave it a10:
This game has SICK animation, and gameplay controls... It's like driving a little GI Joe action figure that does everything you tell it flawlessly. I can see how some might think the high production value of this game is an indicator of its flaws, but I see it as an indicator of its greatness. The only thing this has in common with GoW is that its a Video game, about a character Kratos was inspired from, and has floating orbs to heal/give you exp... and the magic, which shouldn’t have been in this game at all, they should have cut the magic... your stupit if you allow Conan to use magic idiots, even if you do try to pretend he doesn’t like it when he uses it.. but other than that its totally unique and should be an inspiration to any action game out there!

Mas J. gave it a3:
I wanted to like this game but the boss battles are so repetitive, frustrating and boring. An hour for each of running around in circles doing the same moves to get one or two hits in until their health is gone, then a button combo, then their health regenerates to full three more times and you repeat all again and again until you die and have to restart or eventually grind your way through. Bad design based on God of War boss battles. I would rather be working than having to complete this game.

Robyn C. gave it a7:
It's just like God of War series. There is just better movement in this game.

Independent Film gave it a10:
It's clear by the reviews that this is a love it or hate it game. I totally enjoyed this one. The gameplay and general entertainment value helped me to look past its drawbacks. I wasn't expecting Heavenly Sword graphics or production value, but how could I? This game had nearly no marketing, which is a good indicator that it didn't have the kind of budget Heavenly Sword and God of War (both Sony titles) benefit from. Think of it like you would an independent film and you might be able to see past it's shortcomings.

Greg T. gave it a7:
This is a reasonably good game, fun, lots of button bashing and entertaining sword play. The voice acting by Ron Perlman and Claudia Black is good even if it is not in synch with the characters and the lack of over bearing storyline is a refreshing change. The graphics are PS2 grahics which is a shame as they are selling it at PS3 price £50. Like another reviewer I rented this game and throughly enjoyed the experince. For gaming wonder buy/rent God of War 1 or 2 for light hearted sunday slaughtering if like me youv'e done both those games this one doesn't have any real rivals on PS3....yet!

best reviews gave it a7:
Wow, didnt think it was goign to be as good as it was. Even though it was a great and entertaining game it didnt utilize the six-axis control and the graphics were as good as a playstation 2 game. I rented this game and I have to say I still would like to buy it. I can tell you this, if they made the price $10 cheaper this would of sold crazy. Controls are great, combos are pretty fun and the gore makes it a worth your time game.

Zift K. gave it a1:
Utter garbage. Any self respecting human will not go near this game. I give it a one because it made me laugh. The graphics are horrid by PS2 standards. Hmph...... what i'm trying to say is, stay away from this game.
